Wonder Festival 2016 Winter: Takara Tomy

More than awesome robots

Takara Tomy has been slowly building their presence at Wonder Festival every year and this is no different. For the 2016 winter show they've brought some of their biggest new bots to be released later this year. The big reveal was our first look at a fully painted Transformers Masterpiece MP-31 Optimus Primal (Beast Convoy) from the Beast Wars animated series. Images of the unpainted prototype shown in magazines have been viewed with a great deal of skepticism, mainly thanks to what seemed like an ungainly transformation and lack of sculpted fur textures. But the display showing the figure painted has renewed a great deal of faith in the figure. Feet are still crazy looking in gorilla mode, but the figure is showing its value as a Masterpiece.

Meanwhile, directly under the Optimus Primal display, Takara Tomy gave an early look at their version of Hasbro's Combiner Wars Combaticons. The new Unite Warriors Combaticons feature some improvements over the original release, the most notable being an entirely new Blastoff figure replacing Hasbro's Quickslinger repaint. Only other known change is Vortex, a repaint of Hasbro's Alpha Bravo, will features four blades instead of two. Hopefully they'll fix Brawl's lack of a way to lock his torso to his waist. We still haven't gotten a good look at these figures painted and most taking photos at WF didn't notice the picture of the painted figures, but we do know they will be very cartoon faithful which has some fans divided, particularly those that would rather have figures modeled on the original '80s figures.

Other items could be found at the booth, though mainly things like phone straps, mini-figures, and the like, but the Transformers were definitely their showcase.  Although, that new motorized Zoids Shield Liger is really cool, check out the video! More to come as Takara Tomy releases better images.
