Who is Noel Cruz?

Dec 10 // Colette Bennett

Community member Ben Moy sent me a link this morning to a blog called Simple Browser which showed off an incredible custom ball-jointed doll of actress Angelina Jolie. Seems like it sold on eBay for US$3,350, which is quite a bit for a doll, even of the ball-jointed variety. However, getting a look at the level of craftsmanship on the doll, I felt sure that she was not the first thing the artist had created -- and I was right.

Noel Cruz, the artist behind the dolls, has been repainting and reworking these creations into amazingly lifelike recreations of celebrities for the past ten years. You can see a small selection of his works in the gallery, but there are tons on his website, including Bette DavisRobert PattinsonCherElvisJohnny Depp, and many more.

Cruz places the dolls up for auction as he creates them, so you cannot order one directly. His Lady Gaga doll was the most recent to sell at US$2,125. Would you consider owning one if you had the funds to do so?
