Tomopop review: Nendoroid Sebastian Michaelis photo

From the first moment I saw him, I was swooning for mysterious butler Sebastian Michaelis from the anime series Kuroshitsuji. Originally adapted from the manga of the same name (now being published in the US by Yen Press under Black Butler), the series seems to be gaining popularity here in the states, if the amount of Kuroshitsuji cosplay I've seen at recent cons is any indication.

Naturally, I've bought almost every figure of this guy that's out there (as you may recall), and when I heard a Nendo was coming I was ecstatic about the news. I'm in that "not enough male anime figures out there" camp, and so every one I add to my collection feels like some small victory.

Hit the jump to see more of the guy who calls himself a hell of a butler (tongue in cheek, of course).

As I mentioned in a post earlier today, Sebastian is number 68 in the Nendoroid series. His box is black with purple details, which perfectly complements the colors of the series. Look how cute he is in there, just waiting to come out! Ok Sebby, I won't make you wait any longer.

Ok, he might only be a few inches tall, but even in Nendoroid form that face gets me and I have to take a moment for fangirl spasms. Aaaaah! Everything is right, from the devilish expression to every strand of the hair. Of course, change a few accessories around and you can get a very different look.

Oh dear. Sebastian is not the type of guy you want to piss off. I'm sorry, was it because I didn't offer you anyplace to sit? I can fix that. Give me a second!

Oh delightful, I've cheered him up. That's good. As you can see, we borrowed L's chair here and everything started looking up. Does that make you feel a bit happier, dear?

Oh, he likes me. My heart is flip-flopping....

Sebastian also comes with a cat and arms to hold it, which looks something like this after you get it attached:

My cat makes that face all the time, so I know how it must feel. Anyhow, one of the joys of Nendoroids is obviously to ability to mix and match their faces and bodies, and so I got the rest of the family and started to experiment. It wasn't long before I noticed something I had never come across before: Sebastian's head was actually a bit smaller than some of the other Nendos, Itoshiki's in particular.

Since one of the ways you can display Itoshiki is to hang him by a noose, I considered this may have been because the head needed to be a bit bigger so he is weighted correctly. However, trying to interchange their faces I discovered that they are actually incompatible, which is a first for me with any Nendoroid I have ever owned.

Itoshiki is on the right, and as you can see, the fittings that slide the face into the hair pieces are two different sizes. No big deal, although it would have been pretty funny to get Itoshiki's angry little face into Sebastian's classy uniform. I had to make do with a few other variations instead.

Aw, he's so grumpy!

Well, you knew this was coming.

If they can't wear each other's hair, they can at least wear each other's costumes.

Ooh! Maybe Sebastian's had enough of Ciel after all!

A quick word from Miku before I forget: Sebastian's stand is a little different from the Nendos that came before him as well. It's hard to capture on film since the stand is clear plastic, but I hope you can see it. What you're looking at is a new version of the Nendo stand which is a bendable peg with the leg fitting attached to it. In other words, you have much more flexibility with how you can pose them on the stand, which is always a good thing.

Anyhow, I hope Sebastian likes it here. Some of the other toys can be pretty fussy, especially when they want attention.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean for you to get irritated, Sebastian! Sometimes Totoro can be a little--

Well, I guess he's upset now. This seems like as good a place as any to end it and let him have some space. Anyway, if you're convinced the world's sexiest butler is still available through Hobby Fan for about $38, but he's sold out through most other retailers, so if you want to add him to your collection, I advise you do not hesitate!

Awesome review. I think my favorite pic was the one of him holding the Death Note.
I received this Nendoroid today, and I squeed of joy too when I saw that he was SO cute :) I love Sebastian as well, and thing he is a great choice to make a little cute figure of. I too noticed that his head was smaller (since my Itoshiki also arrived together with Sebastian), but it just makes him look nicer. I prefer the smaller heads on the figures in stead of the huge heads that the two Death Note males have. They have super balloon heads :|

Now all I want is a nice Diorama to place them in. Can't decide if I want the school set or the living room set... Think I'll go with the living room, eventually, once I get Ciel too :D That will be fun to mess with. Sebastian and Ciel on one side and L and Light on the other, with Itoshiki going all despair in the middle of them XD
Great pictures, It's too bad you cant exchange faces =/
I can't wait until I get my own Sebastian. (He hasn't arrived yet!) I think he is simply adorable. I love your review! It was really fun to read and it was pretty funny!

That purple background makes him so pimp!
@JoZo -- No no, you can exchange faces with all of the others except for Itoshiki. That's the only incompatible one.
I don't know much about Black Butler, except that Sebastian is a hottie. This nendoroid looks so cute, I have to have him... so I just ordered it!
@kit-kat -- Ooh, go watch a few episodes! It's very atmospheric and good! :D
Really pleased w/ the details on him. @ Colette: Do you know if they are making Ciel as promised?
Wish they would come up with sets of accessories...
Got mine a few days ago too. And I simply cannot stop staring at the cute little thing he is! :D

I hope pre-orders for Ciel go up soon! Sexy Sebby needs his master pronto!
Nendo heads aren't always compatible... Miku's head is different from Rin and Len's head and while it can fit, sometimes I'm a little bit afraid of playing too much with them because of this.

I weally want to see a picture of Len in Sebastian's costume ;-; Angry face is a big plus.
The first paragraph made you look like Brad Rice with the whole "Fuck America" thing I am into. >> The rest of the world likes anime too you know.

Either way, the nendoroid is near impossible to find now-a-days as well as Priecia and Zange since no sites have them any more. Sucks because I really want Priecia. D;
I love Sebastian's Nendoroid. Sooo cute. :)

I also really like the stand it comes in. Very nice since it curves nicely with the cape thing.
@nega3 - What are you talking about? All I did was give readers a background of the character. And anime is still a niche market, no matter how many people that read this site watch it. It's my job as a reviewer to make sure readers know what something is from before I start talking about it.

@Dolly - It's coming! There's a color picture of him sitting in his chair in one of the Wonder Fest galleries: http://tomopop.com/photo.phtml?post_key=8239&photo_key=16886
@Colette
I think he meant this: "(now being published in the US by Yen Press under Black Butler), the series seems to be gaining popularity here in the states"
Because you talked only about the US.

But honestly, there's no way she can tell whether other countries are into some anime or not. It'd be wrong if she said that the anime is gaining popularity over the world because, well, at least in Brazil it's not.
@ Colette don't let punks like Nega get you down we all know what you are trying to convey. I love haters. Especially the ones who think they're to cool for school. HEHEHEHEHE

Woo! Awesome review, Colette! I love your pictures so much and want to cuddle him up. ;-; I wish I would have pre-ordered him because I'm once again Sebastian-less but ah well I'll just admire yours from afar XD
I'm really excited that they came out with new Nendoroid stands! I freaking hate the former ones, my nendos keep falling over.

But really great review Colette :)
