Tomopop Review: Kotobukiya Iron Man Movie Fine Art Statue photo

I officially feel that I might have found my defining moment as a collector. The Kotobukiya Iron Man Movie Fine Art Statue is by far the biggest and most expensive piece so far in my collection, but it has given me more joy that I know what to do with.

I was ecstatic when the giant box arrived at my door yesterday afternoon, and now you can rejoice with me as I review the different aspects of the statue.

Hit the jump to see what I thought!

As you can obviously tell I was very happy with my purchase, so this isn't going to be much on the negative side. Though, if there were negative points to the statue I'd be sure to point them out. I just haven't found any yet.

Let's start with the box. I've actually never seen a more informative box for any of the figures I own. Since I don't keep most of them in the box, this usually isn't an issue, but it was really nice to get a lot of background information on the product. There's even a little Sculptor's Commentary by Koei Matsumoto that says:

I concentrated my efforts on recreating the layers of Iron Man's armor, showing the mass and also the character's stateliness, while maintaining the sleek outline of his body.

It also goes on to tell about the character and Robert Downey Jr. playing him in the film. The back side of the box is almost just a work of art itself.

As you can see, the  magnificant cold cast porcelain photographs beautifully. You can barely tell that it was getting close to freezing outside! Every single detail is sculpted absolutely perfectly from the film version of the armor. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

Oh wait, yes I could have, it lights up! I never imagined that the LED lights would look so nice when turned on. I figured, hey that's an awesome addition, but it's truly remarkable. They are even bright enough that you can definitely tell they're on even in daylight. It takes 3 AAA batteries to run it, but it's worth it for the extra little effect. Plus they come with the statue.

I also was ready for it to be big when I ordered it, but it's simply larger than life when you have it in front of you. In reality, he stands a little over 13 inches tall and is quite heavy. It's almost like carrying around your own Iron Man Award instead of an Oscar. He doesn't move at all, but I'm actually quite glad it doesn't, as it just seems so dynamic.

This bad boy was limited to just 7000 pieces, with mine being #912, so you might still be able to get one, but I wouldn't dawdle on it too long or he might fly away. It was definitely worth every penny I paid for it. If you're a collector of this sort, or a massive Marvel nerd life myself, then this is definitely a piece for you. As the great Stan Lee would say, "Excelsior!"

nice review :)

i've always found that loads of info on toys like these just makes it more epic o.o

its too bad you have to flip it over just to activate a switch, would be more convenient if they hid it with some kinda plastic attaches seamlessly at the back or something
How much did it cost :o

it's pretty damn cool, but doesn't sound cheap or close to reasonable :| Probably charged extra for the LE..... 7000 is not a damn LE..... ;p
Very nice review! and nice photos!

Persoanlly I'm going to pass on this in favor of the Hot Toys figure.
Wow, the statue looks fantastical. Nice review and great pictures!
Epic piece, but this statue is lacking booze and whores.
Nice review! And great photos too....I saw one at a local hobby shop it really looks great, although a bit expensive, but for a numbered piece it does justify the cost...I guess you could call yourself one of the lucky 7000!
