Tomopop Review: Alter's 1/8 Azusa Nakano photoAh, K-On!, the ridiculous moe merchandise juggernaut. Most of the character designs don't really appeal to me besides Azusa (with one notable exception), so I have not yet caught on to the craze. However, I find myself powerless against twintails and nekomimi. Combine that with a cute pose, a great sculpt, and production by Alter and I just had to order her.  So hit the jump to see our review of this cutie!

Okay, I know I promised a different review at the end of my last one, but Clalaclan is coming soon! The weather has not been at all cooperative, and I am not taking a figure as expensive as Clala out in 95 degree heat! I realized that Azusa here hasn't gotten much love on the interwebs in terms of reviews, and given her ridiculous cuteness levels, I thought it was time to fix that.

Oh yeah, the box shot. it's a box! It's ... kind of boring, but really small! Easy storage!

I don't think I really understood the term "moe" untill I got Azusa. I avoid moe anime like it is the plague, and while some of my figures are cute I have yet to own a really moe one. Well, maybe the Miku Nendo fits the bill, but I don't have any big moe figures. I didn't understand it before, but now ... well, let's just say that I am totally enamored with Azusa. Does this mean that I suddenly like moe? Only time will tell!

Look at that face and tell me it's not the most adorable thing ever. Okay, maybe not ever, but she's damn cute. I think Alter kind of missed the happy face mark on Yui, who ended up looking a bit demonic, but Azusa here is pure joy. The happiness just radiates off of her face.

Back view is pretty standard, a bit boring but not overly so. Her outfit is not very interesting from the back (or from the front either, honestly), so there was not much that could be done here. However, they didn't skimp on the quality from this angle, and the paint and shading are still great.

As I am sure you know, Azusa comes with an alternate part. NEKOMIMI! She looks about a billion times cuter with them on, so it's a pretty obvious display choice for me. You know me, I am all about the animal ears. On a serious note, Alter did a great job rendering them. The little tufts are almost too much!

Azusa's outfit is well done but utterly bland. This isn't Alter's fault, as the character design just has boring clothing, but it does take away from the figure a bit. I think with a better outfit Azusa would have been more of a stand out figure. As it is she kind of faded into the background, which is a shame because she is really well made.

Azusa's hair is, well adorable. There isn't that much detail in the sculpt, but it is hard to do with something so thin. Her twintails don't give people much to work with, and the shading is really nice so the lack of detail doesn't bother me much. Other companies have tried to poof out her hair a bit to make it noticeable, but I think the slim look suits her better.

Guitar strings! I only have one other figure with strings on their guitar (Daiki Haruhi), so it's nice to see a company go all out on something like this. The strings are actually clear, but under the light they are hard to distinguish from metal ones.

The folds in her skirt are well done, the paint is perfect, the shading is all there, but there's just ... something missing. Some extra oomph that I expect figures to have. Don't get me wrong, I love Azusa, but it is a shame that they picked this outfit. Actually, it is a shame that K-On! has the most epically boring school uniforms of all time. Seriously, guys, put a little bit of effort into it! Some color, cool shapes! It's the same thing we've seen over and over, only the colors are more bland. And yes, I know, it's a slice of life show so they are meant to be "normal" but it makes for hella boring figures.

Alter executed her foot supports very well. It's not overly noticeable like the white and black ones that most companies use, and it is more stable than metal poles.  I know some people complained about it, but there's little else they can do with this pose. Speaking of pose, I haven't yet talked about Azusa's much, and it is really the highlight of this figure. The sense of motion and energy it conveys is just superb. It looks like they captured a moment on stage.

Azusa's base is very nice but it is also problematic. The clear stand that her feet are on is separate from the actual base and has to be attached, which is a huge design flaw. We had to take Azusa apart after the shoot to move her to a new home (school!), and when she was alllllmost free, the clear attached part just split from the base. In the recoil from that, 3 of her pegs snapped off. It's fixable with a ton of superglue, but it's a major annoyance. I thought broken pegs were a thing of the past, and here we have a figure from one of the best companies with a major issue like that!

So should you buy Azusa? I know I complained about her outfit a lot, but in the end I really, really like this figure. Yeah, she would stand out more with a better outfit, but I have more than enough figures that pop. It's almost nice to have a more "mellow" feeling one. And her base is problematic, but learn from my mistakes and be careful and it shouldn't be too much of an issue! She doesn't seem to be very popular sadly, and even though she was released a few months ago she is still available at AmiAmi for 5450 yen!

Thanks as usual to Stephen for taking these pictures! And an extra-special thanks to my awesome dad for letting us shoot in his music studio again! Thankfully he had the same guitar as Azusa, only in a different color! Well, he has 14 guitars, so I suppose that's not really a surprise ... but he also has her amp! She looks so tiny next to it. Be sure to check out the rest of the pictures in the gallery!

As an end note, I have a question for all you lovely Tomopeeps. Stephen got quite a few requests for wallpapers on his Momohime shoot, and a few in-staff requests for Yagyu wallpapers. Would you guys appreciate it if he made say 2 or 3 for the shoots he really liked and shared them with the community? I know I'd really like this shot on my desktop!

MOAR reviews:

Legacy Comments

Great review & pics. I got this from amiami about a month ago, and am still surprised shes still stocked up till now. Hard to look at this figure and not get a big ol smile on my face, it's such a great pose. I definitely share you concern about the pegs, as when I first put her together one peg just didn't want to fit in. I could never see her leaving the pegs though, which I will certainly have a problem with when she needs to be moved. Also the base that came with my is quite unstable, and she rocks back and forth if I even so happen to hit the shelf she's on lightly. Seeing as i love K-On, it's stuff I'm willing to look past.

Being my a newbie figure collector (6 months or so), and my first K-On, a purchase I could never see myself regretting. Some wallpapers would be great as well - I can never get enough Azu-Nyan.
Azusa isn't as popular as the other characters. Kinda weird since Mio is the star, Azusa is the mini version of her so you figure she would be just as popular. They pretty much have the same personality and if you see the show, 1 or 2 episodes they both looked like each other. Anyways I got mine about 2 weeks ago from amiami and also surprised she is still in stock. Definitely a must buy.

By the way, it would be awesome if you post high res pics to use as wallpapers. Thanks in advance!
I hate bases like this =| I think that either the sculptor makes normal poses with feet on ground, or the base has a nice diorama to support+hide something like this.
Personally(and this could be my dislike of the character) She doesn't look as good as the Yui and Mio and the upcoming Mugi that Alter did. The face at a glance looks like lively and detailed and while the pose is great it just doesn't look as good for some reason.
Why is there no pantyshot? >_>
I picked her up last weekend at FanExpo in Toronto, and my goodness, she truly is the sweetest thing. The ear tuffs are adorable!
I really want Azusa to be the next figure in my K-ON! collection. I'm hoping to get her soon. I really love what Alter has done with them- with the exception of Yui, I think they've hit all of the characters well on the mark, and Mio is my favorite figure I own. I'm in love with her!

I'm hoping I don't have any problems with the pegs...
I think her availability is more due to a recent increase in Alter's runs than a lack of popularity. Momohime and that silver-haired girl from Strike Witches were released close to Azusa and they aren't sold out on Amiami either. Or maybe all 3 of them failed to strike a chord with the Japanese crowd, but that doesn't seem very likely (Particularly the Strike Witch, since that show seems to be super popular).

As for Azusa, she's also the only K-On girl with a design that I liked, but I ended up passing on her due to the proximity of her release to Momohime's. Plus, while I love her guitar and the cat ears are unbearably cute, there's something about her mouth that rubs me the wrong way. I guess my perfect Azusa figure would use Alter's hair and accessories and Megahouse's face and pose.
I agree about the boring K-ON! figures. They do look lovely and really well done, but they're just lacking in the standout department. I do like K-ON and I was going to get the petits because they're small, relatively affordable and adorable, but December is not a good month for me >_>

Also, HQ Wallpaper versions of shots from your reviews would be AWESOME! I'd really love one of this shot from Yagyu Jubei's review, it's my favourite: http://tomopop.com/photo.phtml?post_key=14302&photo_key=56230

I'm not sure if this is true for everyone, but it's true for me. Luckily since amiami is able to have em in stock, I was able to order momohime last month, and just ordered Sanya today. Was nice being able to spread them out over a two month period as to not run my wallet out of my house.
I'm powerless against twintails as well :3. Speaking of popularity, she recently topped Megami's character ranking.

I believe the availability is because she was released in 2 close batches, the first was in late June, the second in July I think. At least that's what I can deduct from hobby search and the stock timing of some local suppliers. Maybe Alter over-counted the numbers for the 2nd batch, or maybe they just assured enough stock will last until the psp game came out end of this month ...

Stephen's going to make a bunch over the weekend and we will post links in the cblogs! That one will definitely be included. ^^

If anyone has any specific requests please let us know, if not we're just going to go with our favorites from the last few shoots!

This is a good idea. I may have to actually make a c-blog, lol ...
For all the K-ON i actually watch and rewatch and then watch again, i am still yet to find the figure that makes me want to start a K-ON collection. Still nice another nice model made.
originally skipped this one in favour of the alter school festival mio, but now thinking about cancelling that and going for the max factory one instead....my first K-on figure just keeps on getting pushed further and further back...

Where on earth did you see this at FanExpo? I was there all three days and didn't see any Alter figures :(
Maybe I was looking in all the wrong places?

I can't remember the booth name/number, but it was the second isle in from the west entrance- where the initial entry was on Friday- immediately across from the blatant boogleg booth . I hummed and hawed over it too, so I guess people kept passing it. Then on Sunday, the Alter Mio Maid was put up. I'd already spent my money on Azusa by that point.
