You guys remember when the first Pokemon movie came out?
Burger King had that 150 toys thing, with each of the different Pokemon... I swear my Dad and my brother and I went to Burger King every other night during that. There were even huge trading nights where you would go and try to trade off some of your doubles. It was great, and probably the best I've seen as far as kid's meal toys go. Brings back memories too, like my SCREAM OF PURE JUBILATION WHEN I UNWRAPPED MY MEW TOY. I still have that, somewhere. I actually have kept most of my kid's meal toys, believe it or not. I've always had that tendency to collect, I guess.
(There was also the issue where a small child was playing with the Pokeball part of the toy, put it on their face, and suffocated, and they had to unwrap all of the toys and drop them into the bags instead of giving you the ball. Veeery unhygienic.)
Probably the worst I remember, though, are the little french fry and milkshakes that would transform into dinosaurs. They're pretty iconic and the first thing I think of when I think of Happy Meal toys, but it was awful when you got them when you were expecting something else.
They don't make toys like they used to, nowadays. And it's really not just nostalgia speaking for me. I think.
Also, What is your favorite Fast Food Toy?
It was kind of interesting how they sort of flipped licenses, like Star Wars toys would end up at Taco Bell half the time then BK the rest. Plus the distribution was also kinda messy, since these things don't always ship at around the same time and the lines aren't always in places very long.
My fave toylines were:
~McD's Disney's Hercules (each came with one large hollow figure then a smaller articulate)
~BK's first Pokemon run (sheer variety of toys and types); follow-ups were also cool
~McD's 101 Dalmations (which, shockingly, was actually 101...)
~McD's Lion King Toys
~McD's Mario 3
I also fondly adore the McD transforming happy meal dinos from the late '80s and the Garfield toys. Oh, plus I had some McD employees save me a hydra display from the McD Herc promotion (it was fucking awesome; a large three-headed cardboard display that fit to a wall) but it was like half-wrecked when were packing it up. I really wish they had taken better care of it because it was so damn cool...
For my question, what's your opinion on buckets and pails? Fast food places will occasionally give out containers (like McD's does for Halloween for trick or treating) rather than actual toys. Did you like or dislike these as a kid? Also, what's your opinion on kids meals non-toy playthings like gardening sets and beach items?
Just one last thing. I'm sure that all of you have heard, but California has banned fast food places from giving out toys if the meal it comes with (that's right, the meals don't come with toys, the toys come with meals...) doesn't meet certain nutritional guidelines. What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you feel that the government is overstepping its bounds and cheating children out of toys or do you think that companies are unfairly marketing to children and contributing to an obesity epidemic (and this somehow requires government intervention)?

I think it was only like 40 or 50 of them, but that was a huge number back then. I believe I have most of that run, including the Mew and talking Pikachu. I lost out on the Mewtwo because some total bitch with a capital b decided to bring up some generic toys she'd been given and the Metwos that would have been in my & my brother's kids meals ended up with her. Still fucking pissed about that. I think it was the older Jewish woman who ran a small kinda variety shop down the road where she overcharged for pokemon cards (a then obscene $12 per pack!) and likely ended up selling the damn things.
