Tomocast 22: Happy Meal Toys records tomorrow, give us your questions photo

It's time yet again for the Tomocast to rock the internets!

Our topic this time around are Happy Meal toys in all their incarnations. That includes stuff from McDonald's, Burger King, Wendys, Taco Bell, etc. If it was a toy you got from a fast food joint, it'll be on the docket. I'll most likely be joined by Jonathan Tubbs, Kristina Pino and Rio McCarthy, so be sure to tailor your questions to them accordingly! Best question gets a prize!

Oh man, I used to be crazy about these.

You guys remember when the first Pokemon movie came out?

Burger King had that 150 toys thing, with each of the different Pokemon... I swear my Dad and my brother and I went to Burger King every other night during that. There were even huge trading nights where you would go and try to trade off some of your doubles. It was great, and probably the best I've seen as far as kid's meal toys go. Brings back memories too, like my SCREAM OF PURE JUBILATION WHEN I UNWRAPPED MY MEW TOY. I still have that, somewhere. I actually have kept most of my kid's meal toys, believe it or not. I've always had that tendency to collect, I guess.

(There was also the issue where a small child was playing with the Pokeball part of the toy, put it on their face, and suffocated, and they had to unwrap all of the toys and drop them into the bags instead of giving you the ball. Veeery unhygienic.)

Probably the worst I remember, though, are the little french fry and milkshakes that would transform into dinosaurs. They're pretty iconic and the first thing I think of when I think of Happy Meal toys, but it was awful when you got them when you were expecting something else.

They don't make toys like they used to, nowadays. And it's really not just nostalgia speaking for me. I think.
How do you feel about the issue with the California (and maybe other) government saying toys shouldn't be allowed in meals because it causes kids to make unhealthy choices?
Old Beast Wars Mcdonalds toys: Best fast foods toys ever?
In your opinion, What makes a good Fast Food Toy?, Is it the License?, The actual Toy design?.

Also, What is your favorite Fast Food Toy?
Did anyone one else try (and fail like I did) to collect all the 101 Dalamation toys? I still have them floating around somewhere 8|
I still have a bucket full of McD, BK, and Taco Bell toys all still in pack (not to mention that some of the figures that I've owned the longest are, in fact, just McDonald's or Burger King toys). Although a lot of the toys have been cheap at times, there are some that were on par or better than actual lines running at the time (and even the Young Justice ones at McDonald's right now are pretty nice). Not to mention fast food joints would often give us figures for characters that the fucking real companies wouldn't.

It was kind of interesting how they sort of flipped licenses, like Star Wars toys would end up at Taco Bell half the time then BK the rest. Plus the distribution was also kinda messy, since these things don't always ship at around the same time and the lines aren't always in places very long.

My fave toylines were:
~McD's Disney's Hercules (each came with one large hollow figure then a smaller articulate)
~BK's first Pokemon run (sheer variety of toys and types); follow-ups were also cool
~McD's 101 Dalmations (which, shockingly, was actually 101...)
~McD's Lion King Toys
~McD's Mario 3

I also fondly adore the McD transforming happy meal dinos from the late '80s and the Garfield toys. Oh, plus I had some McD employees save me a hydra display from the McD Herc promotion (it was fucking awesome; a large three-headed cardboard display that fit to a wall) but it was like half-wrecked when were packing it up. I really wish they had taken better care of it because it was so damn cool...

For my question, what's your opinion on buckets and pails? Fast food places will occasionally give out containers (like McD's does for Halloween for trick or treating) rather than actual toys. Did you like or dislike these as a kid? Also, what's your opinion on kids meals non-toy playthings like gardening sets and beach items?

Just one last thing. I'm sure that all of you have heard, but California has banned fast food places from giving out toys if the meal it comes with (that's right, the meals don't come with toys, the toys come with meals...) doesn't meet certain nutritional guidelines. What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you feel that the government is overstepping its bounds and cheating children out of toys or do you think that companies are unfairly marketing to children and contributing to an obesity epidemic (and this somehow requires government intervention)?

I think it was only like 40 or 50 of them, but that was a huge number back then. I believe I have most of that run, including the Mew and talking Pikachu. I lost out on the Mewtwo because some total bitch with a capital b decided to bring up some generic toys she'd been given and the Metwos that would have been in my & my brother's kids meals ended up with her. Still fucking pissed about that. I think it was the older Jewish woman who ran a small kinda variety shop down the road where she overcharged for pokemon cards (a then obscene $12 per pack!) and likely ended up selling the damn things.
Nice shelf, where coulkd I buy them?
How do you think receiving Happy Meal Toys effects a child in the long-term? Does it make them think they'll be rewarded for eating at unhealthy fast food restaurants? Or do you think it helps them to understand how the marketing industry works?
Which Happy Meal toys or any fast food toys to you think helped make a franchise become more popular and make one more less popular? For example, beanie babaies.
What is the dumbest happy meal toys you have ever seen that you just had to have due its shear stupidity.
I used to have all those plates on the top shelf! My fav stuff from fast food places were Star Wars glass cups from BK, Tranforming food from McDonalds, Star Wars toys from Taco Bell, Super Mario from McDonalds, and Sonic (Knuckles) my friend got for me from Jack in the Box.
