Tomocast 20: Bootlegs records tomorrow photo

Tomorrow we record another lovely Tomocast. This episode is on bootlegs, the bane of every figure collector out there. Every time I see one, my poor heart quivers in sadness. Especially when hard-earned scratch is used to pay for a crappy fake. Thankfully, you'll have me, managing editor Jonathan Tubbs, associate editor Andres Cerrato and guest Stella Wong to keep you from getting ripped off.

We'll also need your questions! Ask your bootleg questions and get read on the 'cast. It'll make you the most popular person ever. EVER. Guaranteed or your money back!

Oooh. This will be a good tomocast. Always good to be informed about bootlegs. I have some questions: How do people create bootlegs? Why do they look so darn horrible? Best ways to deal with bootlegs at convention dealer's rooms? Do people think it's ok to buy bootlegs when they have a certain purpose (comparison, customs)? Whether my questions are answered or not, I'm going to tune in!
Not an entirely relevant question, sorry, but I was wondering why the past two shows haven't appeared on itunes?
Have you ever accidentally bought a bootleg? Especially when you started collecting? And what has been the most hilarious one you've seen?

I sadly bought a L nendoroid bootleg from a seller on ebay who used legit pictures 8< (as in, they showed pictures of the box with the stickers) I was in denial for so long that it was fake!
Here's one. When buying on ebay, people often use stock photos, even when they are legitimate. 1) How can you tell if it is a bootleg or not and 2) Some auctions say "Now a bootleg." If you receive your perches and, surprise surprise, it's a bootleg, what are the legal repercussions on that? Can you get your money back through PayPal?
How come you're stealing my photos without even asking if you can use them? The comparison photos from the top of this page are taken from my web page, and I'd suggest you to remove them right away.
Unfortunately, I own two Bootlegged nendoroids which I never really bring up in conversation. What do you suggest that I do with them? They stink to high heaven of chemicals and I cannot bear the feel of them. I do not think they can be modded into anything else, is it time that I just parted ways with these awful reminders? D:
I had two really GOOD bootlegs. If something is out of print, unavailable, and the quality is there, I have no problem getting a bootleg.
How do you feel about bootleg figures that are as good or perhaps even better than the originals?

In the realm of pvc figures, it seems that bootleg toys are almost always of lesser quality than the originals. However, as a (primarily) Transformers collector, I see a range of bootleg Transformer toys that go from horrendously bad to superior in build and paint application when compared to an original.

To go a step further, how much is the knowledge of owning legitimately licensed product worth to you? I find it very difficult to purchase bootleg figures, even when quality is comparable to the original. I may reconsider this when the price difference becomes astronomical, for example, a Takara Grand Maximus costs somewhere in the range of 2-3 thousand dollars. Known bootleg figure makers in the Transformers community have stated that they could bring the toy to market, with original quality, for around $400 shipped to the US. I suppose that's about what it would cost for me to sell out. :D
This is the link to my original article with those photos:
http://mikan-box.blogspot.com/2010/09/ryougi-shiki-nie-jedna-ma-twarz.html
I believe that even when you used them, you should have linked to the source.
Once again, I request that you remove the photos that you have no right to use.
How would you go about looking for specific bootlegs? I'd really like my own Sader, lol.

And to the customizers out there: do you guys ever buy bootlegs for the purpose of cannibalizing them into something really awesome?
If you are worried about bootlegs on ebay, look for several things that will help you isolate suspicious auctions.

1. Price - If it's too good to be true then it is
2. Authenticity - look for the word "authentic" in combination of clear indication of manufacture company name
3. Rating - Only consider buying from sellers with near 100% rating and 1k+ positive
4. Location - I often avoid when sellers are from China/HK, but this should be the least important/helpful information that will help you isolate possible bootleg
Not an entirely relevant question, sorry, but I was wondering why the past two shows haven't appeared on itunes?

they haven't shown up on the zune marketplace either
What has been the worst bootleg that you have ever seen online or in real life?
Have always condemned bootleg toys (especially if they're sold for something close to the original prices)... Fortunately, they're always easy to detect for Nendoroids (due in part to their packaging - parts always fall out of their slots).

However, I chanced upon a user suggestion recently who suggested using bootlegs to fix/replace broken parts.

I think this is a great idea as one of my earliest Nendoroids had a broken neck (Pastel-tan), and I have been wondering if this method would be good for replacing the neck joints (as opposed to glue).
Who are your favorite bootleg sellers? Can you offer any tips for a beginning bootleg enthusiast?

Also, has there been any news on Korea's plans to build a giant Gundam knock-off of China's giant Gundam bootleg? I was going to try to buy China's giant Gundam bootleg, but I'm half curious is Korea will make one at a better price.
Sorry, should read "if Korea will make one at a better price. "
What's the worst bootleg you've ever seen/bought? What's the best?
How do you feel about "high quality" bootlegs like those provided by E2046? What about in the case where they add to the original (like giving Yamashita Shunya's Karin leggs) or offer paint jobs that aren't officially available?
can someone give me tips on how to spot bootlegs? there is a store near us that sells figmas, pvc statues, nendroids, etc but i dont know if its original. some of the images on the package is not that clear but still clear. thanks!
From the Hetalia One Coin set, I bought an extra England on eBay for $8 and surprise! He was a bootleg D:. It was for a present but luckily the girl didn't get mad.
The photo is here: http://imgur.com/SEw7b (sorry, total n00b with HTML stuff)
As you can see, the base is the wrong size and it's dirty, no fuzzy evebrows and the color of the uniform is weird. He is like the lost son of himself with Japan lol.
At that time I was a newbie figure collector and bought my two Hetalia One Coin sets, fortunately they were legit but costed a fortune. I stick with HS/HLJ/AmiAmi for now.
This question is purely for the lulz. Create you own bootleg, describe how the character would look, if it has any blaring obviously bootleg like features and what character would your bootleg be off.

Man selling 1,300 One Piece bootlegs arrested

Bootlegs suck, we all know that. We've all seen them, sitting on store shelves and at conventions, made entirely to deceive people into thinking they're getting a good deal on the figure they want. Some of us have even fallen...
