The Hundreds is making Mondays just a little better with their Garfield collaboration photo

Garfield was a large part of my childhood; between reading it in the newspaper every Sunday (before checking for sales on video games in circulars) and the TV series that I'd watch after school, I've always liked Garfield. I mean, he's a cat that loves to eat Lasagna, hates Mondays, has an adorable friend cat in Nermal, and a stupid dog companion, Odie. And let's not forget the epitome of forever alone, Jon Arbuckle, who is his owner (see Garfield Minus Garfield for further elaboration).

Many people seem to hate Garfield for no real reason, and that was, sadly, the case with this release as well. A few vinyl artists decided to take to Twitter to express their hatred of corporate tie-ins (since when is Garfield any different than a creation a vinyl artist came up with, but I digress...) as devaluing the format and culture of vinyl. Personally, I really don't mind when things like this happen; they take my love of vinyl and act upon things I loved as a child and usually end with great results, such as with Sanrio, Felix the Cat, Peanuts, and countless others.

If you love this 6" x 7" skateboarding, Adam-shirt-wearing Garfield and want to pick it up, pre-orders will begin on Monday on the Hundreds' website and The Loyal Subjects' website and he will be released in January. The regular edition will be a run of 400 and a black edition of 100, and both look to be rather detailed (see the fur on the black) and pretty flawlessly executed, like all The Loyal Subjects' releases. Are any of you Tomopeeps liking this Garfield, or do you side with the artists that feel like this is devaluing the culture?

MOAR vinyl:

Legacy Comments

I also loved Garfield as a kid, and I had all those skinny book collections of the comics too. I don't really see why Garfield is considered a corporate icon and not cool to use in toy art when Charlie Brown or Mickey Mouse are never frowned upon.
*quietly* ...You do know Nermal is a boy, right? (Icon amusingly relevant.)

I think Garfield is mostly frowned upon because Jim Davis admitted he wanted a character as popular as Snoopy. ...Not QUITE sure I get it either, but the merchandising did get ridiculous. I bought my fair share anyway, as I love Lorenzo Music and Garfield.
I had a Garfield Obsession when I was younger, I still have my collection of Garfield plushies in my closet, and A gigantic one that sits by the side of my bed.

I never understood where the Garfield hatred came from I don't see what he's done different that other comics haven't

I loved the Tv show, and I still have my collection of Garfield books, and I even played some of his video-games (which where okay), one of my favorite memories was going to the library and spending hours reading Garfield book

If this piece is reasonably priced I might add him to my collection
i also grew up loving Garfield and have been just as baffled by the nerd hate against him. I think some of it has to do with Hethcliff, since he came first but a lot of people assume Garfield did. So what? They are both orange cats, the subject matter is totally different.

Garfield and Friends was a fantastic cartoon and if you hate Garfield, then you probably love Mondays so go stuff an egg.
I love Garfield I had SO many of the comic collection books and toys.

And I watched the show ALL the time and I'm a big fan of their holiday specials.

In addition to what WickedOrion mentioned, Nermal and Garfield aren't really friends... At least it was pretty apparent in the comic strips. Now Pookie on the other hand... hehehe
I'm not really a fan of Garfield, but I didn't know he was that hated o.o;
I love Garfield. I don't really see what the hate is all about and how it devalues the so called vinyl culture.
