The curious case of WonderCon 2013 photo

WonderCon has become something of a stop on the collectibles circuit lately, with exhibitors like Quantum Mechanix, Super7, October Toys, Frombie, Bluefin, Kidrobot, Mattel, DC Entertainment, Kotobukiya, Kuso Vinyl and Symbiote Studios setting up shop at past WonderCons. Last year, the Moscone Center was undergoing construction, so WonderCon was temporarily moved to the Anaheim Convention Center, with the hopes that the show would return to its longtime San Francisco home in spring 2013. But that's not the case: as announced on its site earlier, WonderCon 2013 will be in Anaheim once more, due to an inability to secure spring dates at the Moscone Center for the event. So that's pretty cut and dry, right?

Well, no. Here's where things get a lot more complicated. An article on Publisher's Weekly quotes Comic-Con International's vice president of marketing and public relations, David Glanzer, as saying they may still get fall dates for the Moscone Center. "We thought long and hard about it," Glanzer said. "If we do get the fall dates in Moscone then WonderCon will be in SF and we’ll have to name the Anaheim show something else." Which means that WonderCon, which is coming up in only a few months time, may not actually end up being WonderCon after all if the Moscone Center can give them fall dates. It also likely means that, given CCI's expectation of fall dates, a fall WonderCon in San Francisco could run within a few weeks of CCI's other Bay Area event, the smaller Alternative Press Expo in mid-October.

Long story short, there will be an event in Anaheim on March 29-31 that may or may not be named WonderCon; regardless of what happens, WonderCon will be somewhere this year; and CCI may be holding two major Bay Area events within weeks of each other. And what's more fun is that 2014 is also still a question mark, so we (and all those exhibitors) could find ourselves wondering what the heck is going on around this time next year, too.
