Earlier this year, we brought word of Mega Bloks' impending World of Warcraft lineup. Of course it went without saying that the raving hordes jumped on these about as quickly as a worgen on an Elwynn Lamb, but the question remained: Would they be up to snuff? I was always cautious with the announcement, myself. I haven't played with Mega Bloks in probably fifteen years or more, but I still remember them as a cheap, lightweight, frail-seeming alternative to Lego. Did anything change?

The Penny Arcade Report's Ben Kuchera recently took a look at one set in particular, the "Goblin Zeppelin Ambush" kit. Without spoiling all the details, as the piece is well worth reading on its own, Mega Bloks still seems to be playing second fiddle to Lego, our Danish block-crafting masters.

With cheap construction and lots of apparent corner-cutting, you'd probably be better off building your own custom WoW designs instead. At risk of inciting a faction war of our own, Blizzard signing up with Mega Bloks over Lego seems to be in poignant counterpoint to the game itself. Where Lego may be standing strong against new usurpers, Warcraft becomes an old has-been, showing its age and dated style in the face of ever-increasing numbers of new challengers.
