Bandai counters rising taxes with larger gashapon canisters

Normally those of us in the west don't feel the effects of Japanese sales taxes. Most stores that export from Japan don't bother to collect Japanese sales taxes which helps to keep their sales up and us buying more. You proba...

Gashapon mini folding chairs are popular now in Japan

I can never predict what will become popular. I mean, looking back can I comprehend why I wanted to collect cardboard coins? Seriously, pogs were a thing! Especially in Japan, what becomes hot is never predictable. That bri...

Hello and welcome back to Tomopop LinkUP! This week we're doing something entirely different from the normal LinkUP. Last week we took no prisoners when reporting on Wonder Festival 2014 [Winter] which doesn't leave much for this week's LinkUP. I'm not about to let a week slip by without something to read so I think it's time to do another special. Given that a big part of LinkUP is pointing out some of the great stuff done by fans I think now is a perfect time to turn the spotlight on all of you out there.

So join me after the jump as we check out some of the reviews, videos, photo galleries, and creative stuff made by fans, for fans!

There will be a series 3 for Sailor Moon's Swing Set line photo
There will be a series 3 for Sailor Moon's Swing Set line
by Vanessa Cubillo

It looks like the Sailor Moon Swing Set series is doing really well. They’ve just announced that there will be a series 3 filled with more Sailor Moon gashapon figures. This time the figures included are similar to Megahouse’s second series of Sailor Moon Petit Chara figures.

There will be keychain figures of Super Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi Moon, Tuxedo Mask, Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn. Yes, more Outer Senshi toys! I think a reason these figures are such a big draw for fans is because they’re cute and inexpensive.

The outpour of Sailor Moon merchandise has been nice, but there aren’t many things I can actually afford. Series 3 of the Swing Set keychains will start to appear in Japan in April for ¥300.

Tuxedo Mask gets his own Gashapon figure set photo
Tuxedo Mask gets his own Gashapon figure set
by Vanessa Cubillo

There has been so much Sailor Moon stuff that it’s just too much at this point. We get it, you’re the one named, Sailor Moon! What there hasn’t been enough of is toys of Tuxedo Mask.

I think there’s been just one trade figure of him that’s been released so far. I’m honestly surprised Bandai hasn’t added a figure of him in their S.H. Figuarts line. Well, now Tuxedo Mask will be getting his own gashapon figure set.

It hasn’t been officially announced yet, but an image has surfaced showing five unpainted figures. Each figure shows him in a different pose like standing, kneeling, and for some reason, upside down. This series will be called “Go for it! Tuxedo Mask,” and will be released in March. You can find this set up for pre-order now on J-List for US$15.

Tomopop Review: Yotsuba&! Monochrome Animals Vol. 1 photo
Tomopop Review: Yotsuba&! Monochrome Animals Vol. 1
by Brian Szabelski

If any one series brought me back to anime and manga ... it was actually InuYasha, but it was Yotsuba&! that really kept my attention going when I was looking for something new to dive into. Kiyohiko Azuma's previous work Azumanga Daioh had been one I enjoyed, and when I got a hold of his series featuring a 6-year-old with green hair and endless curiosity for everything in the world, I was hooked immediately. Ever since, I've been slowly adding Yotsuba&! figures to my collection, and Kaiyodo's most recent gashapon release caught my attention. That would be the Yotsuba & Monochrome Animal series, featuring five different animals paired with Yotsuba doing various things.

Are Kaiyodo's latest CapsuleQ figures worth it for Yotsuba&! fans, though? The answer is right behind the jump; see you there.
