Tomopop Review: Minifigures.com Freddie Mercury photo
Tomopop Review: Minifigures.com Freddie Mercury
by Soul Tsukino

A few weeks ago I was able to do a story on Minifigures, an England-based website where you could buy celebrity LEGO figures. I was happy to see that Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was one of the figures you could buy.

I became a fan of Queen directly as a result of the Wayne's World movie that was released back in 1992, shortly after Freddie's death from AIDS. I was drawn not only by the large bombastic sound, but also the image the band portrayed, and the creativity they showed. Ever since then I've called them my favorite musical act of all time. To say they hold a special place in my mind is an understatement.

Well, through the magic of Tomopop, I was surprised to have a package delivered to my door with a little friend inside!

Starscream mutilated for neat custom Hulkbuster Ultron photo
Starscream mutilated for neat custom Hulkbuster Ultron
by Scarecroodle

Pack Rat Studios has crafted a custom "Hulkbuster Ultron" and, if you like it, you can bid on it via ebay right now (or rather bid within the next 4 days).

The custom appears to be kit-bashed from a Transformers "Hunt for the Decepticons" Leader-class Starscream and an Iron Man Legends Ultron. While I can't identify the torso piece, it reminds me of something that I may have seen on one of Hasbro's Iron Man figures. It's topped off by a pretty awesome paint job on figures which originally had unremarkable paint apps.

The concept is pretty cool. Movie Starscream's design was a horrific mess that works well as a clunky Hulkbuster build. The overall design also looks surprisingly menacing and, because it's a leader-class, it's large enough to stand over most Hulk figures (be they Marvel Legends (seen in gallery) or Select).

The custom's starting bid is US$150 and, in fairness, the HftD Starscream alone is pretty expensive on the aftermarket these days (although, if you were lucky enough to catch him at TJ Maxx/Marshall's a few years aback, he was only US$25).

While I mourn for poor ol' Starscream, I can't help but think that Michael Bay did far worse to the character. Be sure to check out all of the images in the gallery.

Tomopop About Town: Custom plushies at Kollision Con 2015 photo
Tomopop About Town: Custom plushies at Kollision Con 2015

Anime conventions are great, aren't they? You go to see the cosplay (the good and the bad), maybe visit that same "Understanding Evangelion" panel that's at every con, and blow lots and lots of money at the vendor hall. Well, that's my routine anyway.

Kollision Con is a Chicago anime convention that, for reasons unknown, happens in the dead of winter. I went last Friday and Saturday mostly to do a bit of cosplay and concert photography. However no visit to a con is complete without a trip to the vendor hall. That's where I found a couple of booths featuring custom plush creations!
