Tomopop LinkUP: The Puzzle & Dougrams edition

Nov 21 // Jeremy Emerje Crocker
Max Factory has updated their blog with a gallery for their Dougram model kit. It's very impressive looking with just having the canopy frame painted and stickers applied. Have you seen Good Smile Company's new Picktam line of face changing rubber straps? Of course their first series is for Attack of Titan. They're about the size of a Nendoroid Petit and like a Nendoroid all of the parts are interchangeable. Plus they're making bonus expressions as well. Been to the Good Smile Company website recently? It's been completely overhauled and Kahotan has posted a guide to all of its new features and there are a lot! Speaking of the GSC website, they've got a preview up of the upcoming Nendoroid Neptune from Hyperdimension Neptunia. She's being bundled with the seventh volume of the anime DVD and Blu-ray in Japan. She's a full figure that comes with two expressions, a bunch of arms, and a game controller to hold. Now make a figma! Bandai has put up a video for their new Sailor Moon Moon Stick prop replica, or what they're calling a "Proplica". I don't know if the quality is enough that I would call it a prop, but it is shiny. AMINIMAL Studio has started a Kickstarter project called Inkimals which allows users to customize their own 3D printed designer figures. They're still a long ways from their goal so show them some support. I'm really impressed with what 3D printers can do with color these days. Hobby Search Tweeted an updated prototype shot of KanColle's Yukikaze figure from Aoshima. She's looking cute! Hobby Search also Tweeted this pair of super cool Ghibli 3D puzzles from Ensky. I want them! wieselhead posted a great photo review of Kobato Hasekawa from Haganai by Kotobukiya. So cute and love the backdrops! Hevesh5 uploaded this great video of domino tricks. With over 10 million views and counting there's some really cool stuff to see in here. AmiAmi blog has posted a feature on the upcoming IDOLM@STER Umi Kouaska figure from MegaHouse. We got our first good look at her in magazine scans back in September and she's looking even better now. Tentacle Armada did an extensive photo gallery of Meiya Mitsurugi from Muv-Luv Alternative by Kotobukiya. Looks amazing! Argonaut Resins is doing some experiments with metal cold cast Tutz. First up are these great looking aluminum casts with more tests coming soon. GSC's Shinsotsu (New Recruits) blog updated with a neat post showing how Nendoroid package layouts are decided. Here I thought it was just magic. The Animate Osaka Nipponbashi store has an employee that's causing quite the buzz among female customers. Crunchyroll has a post with lots of pictures and videos about Yuya Uchida, a real otaku with a thing for fighting games and older women. He says he works nearly everyday so if you happen to be touring Osaka... Neath Grim has done a review of Max Factory's 25th Anniversary Belldandy and Holy Bell figure from Oh, My Goddess! Those are some really great photos! And that's it for another week. Be sure to come back next week for more small servings of all the things you love.

Tomopop Review: Drew Oliver's Computer Virus Doll series

Sep 02 // Natalie Kipper
Item Names: Computer Virus dolls (Trojan, Malware, Virus, and Worm) and Computer Virus Digits keychains (Trojan, Malware, Virus, and Worm)Item Maker: Drew Oliver's Computer Virus DollsPrice: US$9.95 (dolls) and US$7.95 (keychains)Available at: Computer Virus Dolls First up is the Trojan plush (well, the company calls them "dolls" but, trust me, it's a plush). I don't normally wax poetic about a plush's tag but this series really goes all-out. For starters, the fabric tush-tags of this series' plushes are written is binary. And then there is the rather intense hangtag. On the outside it looks like a broken computer and, when you open the flap, there is a pop-up label with the name of the plush designed to look like a pop-up window on a computer screen.  Yeah, a lot of thought went into this.   The Trojan's body is made up entirely of ones and zeroes (binary code), as are all the other character designs in this line. As we continue on, you will notice that all of the ones made of a shiny, metallic fabric. These and the contrasting dark zeroes represent the charged and uncharged bits of a computer chip. Like I said before, plenty of thought went into the design. Given that all the of these creatures are designed using ones and zeroes, things tend to get a little on the creative side. I thought the Trojan was quite clever, with its use of a zero as shield and a one as a sword (or spear, perhaps?). It looks a tad awkward when you face the plush head on but from a side view, it works out rather well. Before we move on, a word about the fabrics chosen for these plushes. The pleather-like material used on the zero portions of the body seems to be prone to puckering at the seams. I haven't noticed this anywhere on the metallic bits, but  in different places on several of the plushes, stuffing is coming out of the black fabric's seams. It is more noticeable as the white fluff appears against a dark fabric. It isn't enough of a break to damage the integrity of the plush but it is annoying as a collector. Trojan's affected area is on top of its "head." I interpreted Malware's use of binary as an angry or frowning face. The red safety eyes add to the angry feeling. I suppose it could be some sort of bull with the ones as horns rather than slanting eyebrows. It feels like some sort of a Rorschach test. On the Malware plush, the seam flaw appears on the inside of the "zeroes" as well as the back seam near the tush-tag. The Worm is my favorite of this line. There is something about its simple and somewhat comical design that makes me chuckle. I love the plush's face, with its voracious, gaping mouth. For some reason it brings to mind a bizarre form of a Muppet.  Okay, now we get to the Virus plush and, I have to tell you, I have absolutely no clue what this design is supposed to represent. The best I can come up with is some kind of bird but that makes no sense as far as I can see. Virus' seam issue is perhaps the worst. The problem seams are larger, appearing not in spots but in whole sections, and look like they are more damaged. So, we've covered the plush/doll portion of the series. Now, let's talk about the keychains. They are made of a rubbery material and measure around 2 and a half to 3 inches at their longest side, depending on the character. Here is the Trojan keychain. Out of the four characters,  I think this one looks the the best as a keychain.  However, there are one some flaw. The sparkles in the "ones" of its body stop at the backside, leaving what looks like a black stripe. This problem appears in all of the keychain characters, actually. I imagine it comes from how the figure bits are molded. Next is Malware. The flaw I just mentioned was least noticeable on this guy. I also appreciated how smooth this one felt in my hand. Then there is the Worm keychain. I must confess that I was more than a little disappointed with the Worm keychain. The face part is not three-dimensional but flat on the backside. There was also a big line that wrapped around the sides of the body. Finally, there is the Virus keychain. This one's "black stripe" issue was just as obvious as the Trojan's. I did, however, like the little pointed "nose" created by the body. I can see potential in The Computer Virus Doll series and I definitely think the plushes are a good start (although they do need to get that seam issue straightened out pronto). The stuffed characters exude the same charm that Drew Oliver is known for. From I have seen with this batch, I am less charmed by the keychains. It could just be that the designs didn't translate well into rubber or whatever material they used. So, my final word: a mixed bag with good designs but some hiccups in follow-through. [A big thank-you to Computer Virus Dolls for providing us with these samples!]

Tomopop Review: Mimoco's My Little Pony Mimobots

Apr 14 // Rio McCarthy
Product Name: My Little Pony MimobotsProduct Maker: MimocoRetail Price: US$24.95 - $129.99Available At: Mimoco Let's take a look at the packaging for the Mimobots shall we? It's a pretty basic package with some My Little Pony flair. Each of the USB drives are in the clear plastic sections so that you can see them easily just by looking at a quick glance. They're packaged with their heads detached so that you can obviously tell they're flash drives, if you don't care to look down just a little bit where it says so. The back features the other MLP drives in the series, which as you can see we have all three of them right here. If you didn't catch it on the front, I also got the 8GB version of all of them. Interestingly enough when I bought mine they were US$19.99 each, but now they're showing that they're US$24.99 for the 8GB versions. You can get 8GB for US$24.99, 16GB for US$29.99, 32GB for US$39.99, 64GB for US$69.99, or 128GB for US$129.99. Here you get a look at how to pronounce "Mimobot" if you weren't sure before hand. You can also see that this happens to be the package for Rarity, as she was the limited edition pony. I got #93 out of 500. There is a cute use of the My Little Pony world on the insert that's inside the box, which I'm a fan of. I love it when companies go the full nine yards to make sure what they're selling fits in with the world of what series they're working with. As you can see the only real protective packaging they have is just this clear plastic to hold them in place. It seems to have done its job though, as there were no scratches or anything due to not being secure. Here we get our first look at them outside of the package. From left to right we have Rarity, Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle. They look much better with their heads on, don't they? The bottom of the flash drives show which pony is which, and you can see all that copyright business as usual. You also can see where the lights are on their bums for when they're plugged into the computer. We'll take a look at Rarity first, who is my absolute favorite. Seeing her cute little marshmallow-looking face is what won me over with these Mimobots to begin with, so I obviously am happy with her. However, sadly, there are a bit of printing issues with some of the paint lines. There's some of the lighter purple outside of the lines, and the darker purple is a little rough in some areas. Her cutie mark does look great though, so that's definitely a plus! Next up is Twilight Sparkle, who I was actually the most tentative of. I originally really disliked her face and the weird upward look of her eyes, but it's actually grown on me a bit. She's still at the bottom of my list of the three, but I still like her. The part that actually surprised me a bit was the fact that she actually has her wings on the back after becoming an alicorn in the last episode of the 3rd season. Like Rarity, she only has one cutie mark instead of having one on both sides of her body. Rarity's made sense considering her tail and hair somewhat being in the way, but it doesn't as much for Twilight. However it does look good regardless. There maybe a little bit of weirdness with the printing of the wings being a little outside the lines, but it's far from noticeable on this one. Last, but definitely not least, is Rainbow Dash. You can see there's a bit of silliness with the printing on this one as well. Her right wing is missing the inner bit, and some of the hair is a bit uneven in certain places. She's still adorable though, so it's no big deal. Rainbow Dash is the only one of the group that actually has both of her cutie marks. It makes me even more curious about while Twilight doesn't have two, as Dashie's tail is almost in the way as well. I like the way this one looks, and it just feels a bit more complete with both. Here you can see all three of the Mimobots all plugged in and lighting up. It was a bit difficult to get pictures of them so you could still see them, as well as the light itself, but hopefully you get the idea. Now, let's get to the surprises they hold inside! When you first plug in your Mimobot it comes up with whichever one you place in your computer will show up on your autoplay menu. You can see I obviously plugged in Rarity for this. The first thing I saw when I plugged it in were the avatars that they give you. They have both 60px by 60px avatars, as well as 80px by 80px avatars. There are several for all three of the ponies, as well as some with them as a group. Second up are the computer icons that you can use for different things on your desktop, or around your computer. Next we have desktop wallpapers which feature the Mimobots themselves. I like Rarity's, but I think the Friends Together! group wallpaper might be my favorite, as well as the last one with the somewhat "burst" looking background. Lastly for files, we have the phone wallpapers. If you've got a smart phone, feel free to add these little cuties to your home screen. Now when we load up the actual "program" on the drive, it first shows you the synopsis of the series. In the videos we have the opening theme, which is where you can see that this show isn't just for children or little girls. I mean, for goodness sake, we have The Big Lebowski ponies right here! They also share some of the books with us, especially noteworthy is the first issue of the IDW comic. There is also a section for the sketches of the first issue of the comic, as well as a preview of the My Little Pony: Under the Sparkling Sea book. Here you can see just how clear the images are in the first issue of the comic. I've collected and read all of them that have been released so far, and I absolutely love them. It's always fun to try and collect the covers, and you never know what jokes they might throw into the books as well. Here's the preview of the Under the Sparkling Sea book. It's.. interesting to say the least. All of the ponies gain fins so they can swim underwater, so that's a thing. One of my favorite things is the included music that you can listen to on here. There are four songs included, and one of  my favorites, "Giggle at the Ghosties", or "Laughter Song" as it's written here, was one of the four which made my day. Now if only I could have gotten "Art of the Dress" as well. What's the final verdict? I say go for it! If you're a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, or any of these specific ponies, I can definitely say it's worth your while, especially if you need a USB drive. The extras are great, the designs are fun, and they're definitely practical! Be sure to hit up Mimoco if you want one of these little cuties for yourself.
