Tomopop (Mini) Guide to the Weekend: May 4, 2013

May 02 // Brian Szabelski
Fight For Your Right First up on the list, we have ... custom boxing gloves? What? Yes, it's a real event that's happening at Toy Art Gallery this weekend, but it's all for a good cause. The event features 40 artists and has been put together by Fight The City, which makes custom gloves and boxing gear. The gloves will be auctioned off and a portion of the proceeds will go toward the Hoods to Woods Foundation, which helps inner-city kids explore the wilderness and other outdoors activities. Ten of the 40 artists are showing off and selling their gloves exclusively at TAG: Akira Kiriya, Anthony Ausgang, David Flores, Devilrobots, Ron English, Shojonotomo, Task One, Tetsuya Chiba, tokidoki, and Paul Frank. You can see some of the gloves in our gallery. I'm curiously interested in what Ron English's gloves will look like ... It's a one-day event, only happening Saturday, May 4, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific at TAG (7571 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles). A second show takes place in New York City on May 9 at The Time Hotel (22 W. 49th St., Manhattan, New York). The second event will feature the remaining gloves from artists Angry Woebots, Abe Lincoln Jr., Alex Kirzhner, Bwana Spoons, Cope2, Dan Lizowski, DreS13, Frank Kozik, Indie184, Jay222, Jon Contino, Justin Carty, kaNO, Kronk, Lou Pimentel, Lucky Nakazawa, MCA, Mike Jones, Ryan Mcguire, Sara Martin, Scarecrowoven, Mr. Shane Jessup, Shut NYC, Skinner, Skwak, SpankyStokes, and Toofly. All these custom gloves will be up on eBay starting May 9. Oddfellows and Pink Eye @ Stranger Factory Out in the deserts of New Mexico (okay, more like in Albuquerque), Stranger Factory has a double opening this weekend. In the main room, Doktor A and Chet Zar are opening Oddfellows, a showcase of new works from both artists respectively. That means new pieces from Dok, which we just might want to highlight in a separate post because they're pretty cool. In the project room, doubleparlour is opening Pink Eye, featuring some trademark resin monster pieces. Both shows will run through June 2.   The Mini Tea Tour's London Stop and Suck It Up Lunartik's travels have him hopping around Europe in May, starting with the next stop on his Mini Tea Tour: Raygun Comics in Richmond, London, U.K. The show will feature some 70-plus Mini Teas done by different artists and runs from May 4 to May 30. That's not all, though; Lunartik is also stopping off in Barcelona with Niels de Jong as part of The Clean Machine for their first show, Suck It Up. It takes place May 10 at Sho BCN Galley (Travessera de Gracia, 163, Barcelona, Spain) and will feature prints from both artists. They'll also be in attendance. May the 4th be with you/Lucky Bag Sale/Gargamel Show @ Super7 Star Wars fans in the Bay Area might want to head on down to Super7 this weekend, as they're once more holding their May the 4th Be With You celebrations all day long. Here's a quick rundown of what to expect: Hyperactive Monkey's Jerome Lu is doing a live mural painting all-day Gentle Giant, Diamond Select Toys and EFX Collectibles will all have new prototypes on display Four new T-shirts will be available as part of the Super7 x Star Wars collection for US$35 Super7's vintage Star Wars toys will be 20 percent off, plus you'll have the chance to win a Blue Snaggletooth Kenner figure as part of a raffle (US$1 per ticket, drawing at 6 p.m. Pacific) Rebel Scum is hosting a meet-up and trading party at the event for collectors Steve Sansweet of the Rancho Obi-Wan Museum will have a bunch of his Star Wars memorabilia on display, and will be signing copies of his new book, "Star Wars: The Ultimate Action Figure Collection" Acme Archives is having an art show at the event (preview here), as well as a print by Amy Mebberson available called Leia's Story. It's limited to 200 pieces at US$50 each, and you can start pre-ordering them right now. It looks really, really nice. Also of note is that the annual Super7 Lucky Bag sale will happen Saturday, May 25 (a quick reminder for the uninitiated of what that entails), the same day that a Gargamel custom show opens its doors. Be sure to check out both if you're going to be down there. Good Smile's Golden Week events While it's Golden Week in Japan, Good Smile Company is not taking a break at all. They've got two events lined up for this week and weekend. First, they're hosting several displays across Akihabara, from May 3-6. The locations are: Animate Akihabara, 5th floor Kotobukiya's Akihabara shop, 1st and 3rd floor Sofmap's Amusement Hall in Akihabara, 4th floor Volks Akihabara Showroom, 2nd floor Then, they'll be visiting Shikoku via Machiasobi vol. 10 in Tokushima on May 3-5.  Treasure Festa in Ariake 9 Finally, this weekend is also Treasure Festa in Ariake 9, taking place Sunday, May 5, at Tokyo Big Sight. As you might expect, it'll be garage kits and dolls and such as far as the eye can see. Grizzry Panda is attending with his Isshiki Akane piece, and a ton of other garage kit producers like T's System should be in attendance. Also happening this month: Fonzo Loves the UK (May 11 - SHO Gallery - Cardiff, Wales, U.K.) Shizuoka Hobby Show 2013 (May 16-19 - Twin Messe Shizuoka - Shizuoka, Japan) Design Festa 37 (May 18-19 - West Halls, Tokyo Big Sight - Ariake, Tokyo, Japan) London MCM Expo (May 24-25 - ExCeL London - Newham, London, U.K.) MegaHobby Expo (May 25 - Akiba UDX - Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan) Vinyl Cavey Custom Show (May 31 - Fleet River Bakery - Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, U.K.)

Tomopop's Big Bad DesignerCon 2012 Roundup (Part 2)

Nov 01 // Brian Szabelski
Toy Art Gallery Toy Art Gallery's booth this year, #400, is host to a multitude of exclusives. These include the black edition of Nathan Hamill's Strife and Sire; Metallic Rainbow Uamous from Uamou; Deathshead White Edition by David Flores; 4-inch MyGuys by Meredith Dittmar; Pokken Kaiser and Luftkaiser editions by Paul Kaiju; Waodog one-offs from Waotoyz; an exclusive or two from Galaxy People; and more. There's also three planned signings: Davis Flores from noon to 12:30 p.m.; Nathan Hamill from 1 to 1:30 p.m.; and Paul Kaiju from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Finally, visitors will get a peek at the TAG Lifesize Figure Series. Munky King The big news from Munky King for DesignerCon is the release of Luke Chueh's Target (US$100, 1000 pieces in colorway total), which comes with a removable brush accessory and walls that will interlock with the other colorways to let you create a shooting gallery-like display in the future. Luke will be signing at the booth, #217, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.   Scott Tolleson If you pop by booth #708, you might find yourself in the middle of an army of brand new Deadbeets! The second run of Scott's sofubi carrot monster will be at the show (US$60, 25 pieces) and not only is it cast with translucent orange glitter vinyl (that's a mouthful), but it apparently glows in the dark. Sounds like some serious qizardry may be involved there ... If you're a fan of the Designer Toy Award-winning Nosellots plush line, then you'll want to know that Jedidiah McDoogle, the last of the gang to debut, will be making an appearance at DesignerCon. There will also apparently be a special "D-Con Deal" on the Nosellots line. Scott's also releasing the artist proofs of his Mr. Pinkerton Mini Qee, with five pieces of each of the four colorways available for US$50. These will be signed and it sounds as if the first 20 purchases come with a limited edition print. Squid Kids Ink Squid Kids Ink is hunkering down in Booth #600, and their exclusive is the little guy you see above: a golden DesignerCon 2012 Mini 10-Doh! figure! Nate from Squid Kids Ink actually designed the back cover of the program for the event, and the Mini 10-Doh! features the old version of Vincent because ... well, Nate said he couldn't get the new DCon logo design for this year to fit on the label. Still, it's a nice little figure and another chance to pick up an event-exclusive golden 10-Doh! for those of you who collect these little fellows.  Vaud Villain Studios Along with bringing Bi-Polar Molar, Vaud Villain Studios will have the Mostly Mono Modern Martians at booth #828. The first in the Mostly Mono Martians series, these are a series of custom Munnys painted in a single color; this variant happens to be blue, with some yellow and red accents. The five-eyed little fellow is also wearing a little hat and dressed in the most modern of fashion. He comes inside a hand-painted box with an illustration showing the Martian and his fancy little Hover Vespa. You know he has to have one being modern and all. Nick of Vaud Villain has also sent us teasers of a second Martian he just finished up, the Mostly Mono Madness Martian. No, it's not Randy Savage-themed, sadly, but it does come in green with pink and purple accents. He's got the words "1STP BYND" tattooed on his knuckles, a motto that he tends to live by on the big red planet. Kuso Vinyl Kuso Vinyl will be setting up shop in booth #330, and in addition to Ponburger, they'll have a few other things. One is a chance for the West Coast folk to get their hands on the Chester Runcorn Gin and Tonic edition from NYCC (US$150, 150 pieces in total between both events). Also at the booth will be four custom Celsius and Fahrenheit figures from James Fuller (a.k.a. Fuller Designs), who's turned Rotobox's gunslinging hero and villain into Punisher, a Celsius Spawn, Wolverine and Gunslinger. The customs will be on display at the booth. Evilos Those of you who are Vinylmation fans (yes, that's you, Kristina) probably already know who the heck Evilos is. For the rest of us, he's the artist who does some nifty Vinylmation customs and is taking up residence this weekend in booth #428. For DesignerCon, Evilos is bringing along an Alien Vinylmation pin (limited to 100 pieces) and some custom Vinylmation figures. Among those are the Mickey in Carbonite (20 pieces), which features some nice detailing on the surface, and the Jedi Mickey Vinylmation customs. Quite fitting given the news this week, don't you think? Galaxy Monkey The duo known as Galaxy Monkey have taken over booth #325, and they'll be bringing along a DesignerCon exclusive colorway of their first sofubi figure, Monkeynaut (US$65, 20 pieces). Monkeys in spacesuits? I'm pretty sure that idea always works for a figure, especially if Tim Tsui's work taught me anything. They'll also have limited numbers of GID and solid black DIY variants on sale for US$50 each and some customs at the booth. [So ends Part 2, but stay tuned: Part 3 is on the way and it's got some big hitters in it!]
Chock full of Martians, superheroes, monster carrots and Jedi!
Part 1 of our Big Bad DesignerCon 2012 Roundup had a lot in it, sure ... but it barely scratched the surface. We're on to Part 2, and this time, we've got some more familiar names for designer toy fans. Kuso Vinyl, Evilo...

Tomopop About Town: Toy Art Gallery

Feb 11 // Natalie Kipper
Right when you walk into Toy Art Gallery (or TAG, for short), you are greeted by two massive Qee figures on tiered platform displays that are situated in the center of the front part of the store. I was struck by the sheer amount of shininess that the majority of the store's merchandise gave off. The bottom part of the tiered display has items that are perhaps more mainstream and eye-catching (note: I said "perhaps") to the average customer walking down the street. One of the displays has vinyl figures like Doktor A's Humphrey Mooncalf and some of Andrew Bell's works. The other has a variety of things including a set of Shawnimals Ninja Town blind boxes.  On the right side of the store, the wall is lined with a large display cabinet full of custom figures, many of which appear to draw inspiration from Japanese culture. Seeing the Half-Baked Old Snake figure by Rohby totally made my day. Next to the big display case is a nook (or is it cranny?) with a bunch of kaiju figures hanging from the wall as well as being displayed on a nearby shelf. I didn't have anything to display the scale but some of these monsters are pretty dang big and my camera does not do justice to some of the more neon color schemes. On the left wall of the store, parallel to the right side's display cabinet of custom figures, is another display cabinet. This one is an odd mix of dreamlike fairy dolls and dioramas, nightmarish I-dunno-what-the-hell-these-are figures, and cute animal statues (check out the two Pecan Pals at both ends of the case in the last shot).  Next to the party mix display cabinet (and sort of parallel to the kaiju stuff) was where the plushes and general cute things are kept. This should be no big shocker, but, this was my favorite part of Toy Art Gallery. I was especially pleased to see the Ochaken and Rody plushes, along with some Gloomy Bear stuff that was more than the typical offerings. The bigger figures and/or figures made of metal are located on the way towards the back of the store. I mentioned before that some of the kaiju figures are big but ThreeA/Ashley Wood's Heavy Bramble (shown in the first photo of this cluster) makes them look like Polly Pockets in comparison. All of the apparel, wall artwork, and art publications are found in the back. From what I could tell, a majority of the art on display is made by artists who also work with toys. The T-shirts and hats are all of very good quality and have some designs you won't find at Old Navy or Hot Topic. And thus ends our walkthrough of Toy Art Gallery, the final destination on our Melrose Avenue tour — Tomopop Style! Please wait until your article has come to a full and complete stop before exiting. And for those of you who want a proper summation: Toy Art Gallery is one of the big spots to go for toys of the higher end persuasion. There is almost always an artist's showcase on display. I had unfortunately come on one of the odd days when the store was between shows but you can bet I will be back to see a TAG show in the future. I added it to my bucket list.    IF YOU GO: Toy Art Gallery7571 Melrose AvenueLos Angeles, CA 90046 (323)653-8697 Hours of Operation: Tuesday - Saturday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. View Larger Map

The final location in our grand circle tour of Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, Calif., sits a bit farther away from JapanLA, Munky King, and Kidrobot. If you are into the toy show scene, there is no doubt you have heard of it. The store is none other than Toy Art Gallery! Hit the jump to check out the store!
