Custom Made Monday: A new coat of paint photo
Custom Made Monday: A new coat of paint
by Brian Szabelski

Today's my birthday, and as such, I figured today would be as good a day as any to announce the rebirth of Munn-day Morning Recap into a new, expanded feature — Custom Made Monday.

Custom Made Monday expands on what Munn-day Morning Recap did; no longer will we just be rounding up Munnys and Dunnys, but a full assortment of customs from all over the place. You might see custom figures from Jin Saotome; Munnys from notable artists in the designer toy scene; custom gunpla, figmas and Nendoroids and garage kits when they cross our radar; and more. A lot of customs of all sorts will still get featured in their own posts on Tomopop too, so don't worry; they're not all going away. Heck, MMR may even return if we have a particularly good reason for doing so.

For the first Custom Made Monday, we're giving you a taste of what to expect. This time, we have custom designer toys alongside Nendoroids, action figures, even prop replicas that have been made by hand. Not every Custom Made Monday will be this big ... but since this is #1, why not? Hit the jump to check it all out!

Tomopop Exclusive: Dark Horse releasing Hellboy Mini Qees photo
Tomopop Exclusive: Dark Horse releasing Hellboy Mini Qees
by Brian Szabelski

We're happy to bring you guys news that Dark Horse will be distributing a new series of Hellboy Mini Qees that Toy2R is producing. Dark Horse previously released some larger, 8-inch Hellboy Qees, and these are slightly smaller 5-inch Qees. As you might imagine, there will be some different colorways, some in different edition sizes; in the image in the gallery, you can see the regular Hellboy, a BPRD variant and a clear colorway. I like the design, which retains enough of Mike Mignola's original character design, while incorporating the smoother look of the Qee series.

Expect to start seeing the 5-inch Hellboy Mini Qees in June for US$19.99 at retail. We'll see more on these guys at ToyFair next week; in the meanwhile, what do you think of the news, Tomopop readers?

NYCC 2012: Tenacious Toys photo
NYCC 2012: Tenacious Toys
by Natalie Kipper

Tenacious Toys' booth at New York Comic Con was definitely one for toy collectors that fancy their figures with a touch more hands-on artistry. I believe all of the toys there were either hand-made or created by a smaller group. There was a lot to see, and thanks to Brian and Andres, we have have pictures to share!

Starting off with the custom figures, as you will notice from the header, Carson Catlin had several cut-out Qees on display. For the mecha-loving crowd, there were Josh Mayhem's Gunnys, Dunny figures customized with pieces from actual Gundam kits. Love it! The owl-looking Dunny customs are from the Night Terror series by Matt Anderson, done in collaboration with Alarment, Jeff Beck, Haus of Boz, Dcay574, Mike Die, Alister Dippner, Chris.O.Saur, Del Vanzen, Playful Gorilla, Rusted Halo, Scott Kinnebrew, Don P, Bryan Luss, JDBrockin, Reet Neet (R3), Rsin, Miss Zukie, Necro Monkey, John Walsh, Dave Webb, AW177, Orlow, Shawn Wiggs, Tasha Zimich. There was also a resin sculpture from this series at the booth.

Tenacious Toys didn't skimp on original offerings, either. ViseOne's Tube Monsters were available for purchase at NYCC. Brian noted that "they were smaller than I thought they'd be but still with a lot of charming detail." It sounds like there might be more of these little fellows in the future, as well. For con-goers who might want to create their own custom toys, Bugs and Plush had a showing of some of their customizable products (check out Kristina's WonderCon coverage for an example of they work). Bad Applez Inc. had some freaky looking monster apple figures that sort of remind me of the poison apple in Disney's Snow White.

Other works on display came from artists such as Mr. Monk, Evilos, AW177, Blazon Brikhaus, Rampage Toys, Jason Freeny, and JC Rivera, Furry Feline Creatives, Scott Tolleson among others. Check out the gallery to see some of these wonderfully creative toys!
