When Playmates shows up at a convention, they're almost certainly there to talk Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, their most high-profile line in the past few years. It also goes without saying that they show up with a convention...

It's finally time to talk about Playmates' figures for the upcoming TMNT movie

May 06 // Scarecroodle
As with the Transformers films, Michael Bay has radically reinvented the iconic turtles and, despite massive leaps in special effects, still managed to make them look as goofy as the turtles seen in the 1990 film (and that bizarre concert tour). As such, that sets the bar pretty low for the associated merchandise, right? Well, Playmates might have limbo'd right under it. From the images that we've seen (including that big one in the gallery), Playmates' new figures seem like a step down from the good work the company has done with the line for the Nickelodeon cartoon. It's hard to judge just from the photos (they may look better in-person, etc), but the sculpting doesn't seem as solid and the paint appears to have that cheap Happy Meal look to it. I'm not liking the look of the Turtles although that opinion might be based more on my dislike of the movie designs. The April O'Neill (in the film played by Megan Fox, who also starred in the Transformers films until she offended Spielberg by comparing Michael Bay to Hitler) is a little reminiscent of the (first?) April we we saw in the new cartoon toy line and, while the head could be improved, it looks okay. I think my favorite is probably Shredder whose goofy costume looks like it was designed to be a toy. The spiked cape in particular cracks me up a little and I'm looking forward to adding him to a shelf alongside my other Turtles stuff. Finally there's Splinter whose design is surprisingly pleasant. The figure's articulation looks like it may be impeded by the outfit but the sculpting looks pretty good and the head seems to have some very visible Asian influences. I'm still hoping that these might look great in person (and, for that matter, that I'll actually enjoy the TMNT reboot...) although a few, like Shredder, will be hard to pass up regardless. Although I admit that the Ninja Turtles aren't as dear to me as they used to be, I decided to sit in on Playmates' Ninja Turtles panel anyway. They had a few company representatives discussing the past, present, and future of the franchise (vis a vis toys, of course).
