Just keep saying "Panaino!" to yourself
The Monogatari series' Shinobu is many things, but I think "adorable loli" would be her chief descriptor. Although she isn't really played for her moe attributes, Nisemonogatari does highlight her love of donuts. Kotobukiya c...

Miyazawa Model Exhibition Spring 2014: A little donut-loving Nendoroid vampire

Sadly she does not live in my shadow
Apr 08
// Tianxiao Ma
Nendoroid Shinobu has been on my radar for a while, and looks to be a winner. Her more animated, post-Bakemonogatari form is perfect for Nendo-fication (disregarding a certain uncomfortable bathing scene). The version at Miyazawa Model Expo is still unpainted, but she still has that melts-your-heart cuteness. This is one Kahotan preview I'm really looking forward to! [via Hobby Search's Twitter]

Tomopop Review: Good Smile Company's Karen Araragi

Oct 30 // Emily Smalara
Figure Name: Karen AraragiFigure Maker: Good Smile CompanyPrice: ¥10,114Available at: HobbyLink Japan  As you might expect from images of the figure, the box is pretty enormous thanks to that sizable base of hers. Good Smile's Monogatari girls are known to come with pretty flashy bases, and with Karen being no exception hers takes up most of the package. You can get a good look inside thanks to the front being dominated by its window, so there shouldn't be any mystery as to the finished product. A lot of people are confused by the base, thanks to the fact a lot of the designs come from the disc covers that we probably won't see any time in the near future in the West. In particular, Karen's Dio-esque steam roller comes from the artwork of Karen Bee: Part I, faithfully recreated on one side of the box. I really do love seeing the artwork that led to a specific figure, so while it may be just a box I can appreciate the design. Thankfully the base ends up being about as big as you'd expect, and it provides a great contrast with Karen's size. There are pegs to rest her right foot against, and in my case they slotted in very nicely for once. You can even carry the figure by Karen if you're moving it and I saw no danger of doing so pulling her off the base. The bright yellow of the two pieces really jump out as well. It isn't really a color seen all that often, and with it dominating both the steam roller and Karen's outfit it ends up very striking and cohesive. The base itself turned out pretty well, a rather sturdy piece with a nice amount of details. The translucent lights in place are nice, and the two at the base can spin downwards for some reason. I like the slight weathering effect on the roller itself, given it certainly wouldn't appear nice and smooth. Overall it's got just the right amount of detail to be suitable without overshadowing Karen herself. The only surprising part was how light it felt! In hindsight it should have been expected, but the entire base is definitely hollow and nowhere near as bulky as it seems! Speaking of Karen though, let's take a look at the real star here. As I said, I'm no stranger to Monogatari figures, and Karen is certainly worthy of being displayed along the rest. Admittedly she isn't my favorite character--nor even my favorite of the Fire Sisters--but with a series as great as this that isn't entirely saying much. Karen is a great hot-blooded character and GSC pulled off her confident attitude perfectly. As you can see, her jacket comes as a separate part, and while I will probably keep her displayed wearing it it's a nice option that shows her off a little more. I really dig her outfit overall, of course, and I'd be a bit remiss if I didn't mention how the slightly dynamic pose makes her loose top billow up slightly. The perv in me might just be appreciating a little tease of skin here and there, but that's not all! Getting a closer look lets you see the slight detail of her stomach as well as the curve of her back from behind, and you can see GSC didn't skimp on the anatomical details just because she's (almost) fully covered in a baggy top that doesn't show much of her figure off. It's a nice, very awesome touch and really shows their dedication to the sculpt. That being said, I still appreciate her clothing itself. It's really oversized and chunky, especially her jacket, and I'd almost like to see an option for her to be wearing the top more naturally instead of just slinging it over her shoulders. It definitely suits her though--as it should, being a canon outfit in the series--since she isn't the most feminine of characters, and the looseness is certainly easy for her to move around in. With such loose clothing comes a lot of folds in the fabric, and as far as I can see GSC has nailed those little details as well. I'm no artist or fashion designer to spot how fabric drapes perfectly, but it certainly seems to do so in all the right places! Her jacket in particular is really well done with how bunched up it is instead of being a simple flat piece of plastic. Sure enough, there aren't any details out of place anywhere. GSC would certainly be questioned for missing the egg design that Karen shares with her sister, and fortunately it's right in place on her zipper. You'll find the same clip in her hair as well, not only being true to source but also rounding out the overwhelming yellow of her outfit with a subtle bit of color in her otherwise dark hair. As for the hair itself, there's not much to complain about. It's fitting Karen's usual ponytailed style, though I do wish it was made up of a bit more strands than simply one large piece. It's still slightly detailed to add a bit of texture and volume, thankfully, so it's certainly just a minor complaint. In the end, Karen ended up a fine addition to the constantly increasing Monogatari family. Her fiery no-nonsense attitude comes out perfectly in her confident, folded-arm pose, and her unique base is certainly something that stands out on the shelf. GSC's team is in fine form as usual as far as coloring and sculpting goes, and any series fan certainly owes it to themselves to pick her up. Now I just can't wait for the upcoming Tsukihi! [Thanks to HobbyLink Japan for providing us with this sample!]
