Tomopop Review: Minimates 'The Trouble with Tribbles' set

Nov 18 // Scarecroodle
Figure Name: Star Trek Minimates "The Trouble with Tribbles" U.S.S. Enterprise setFigure Maker: Diamond Select ToysPrice: US$30 MSRPAvailable at: ArtFX | Big Bad Toy Store The size of the front blister and its contents doesn't leave much room for decoration, but DST managed to fit a small insert in the front that depicts Captain Kirk alongside the Star Trek logo without really blocking anything. Otherwise, the front of the card seems to feature a space backdrop. You'll probably notice that one of the ... orange things (one schematic I'm looking at calls it a "Bussard Ramscoop") has fallen off in box. The units are designed to be detachable so it's not a real defect or anything. The card back appears rather generic, containing no reference to the specific episode and showing off a Kirk from what I assume was the original set. Once you open the package and get everything out on a table, you'll notice that you have a LOT of stuff. The USS Enterprise comes unassembled and includes a sticker sheet for extra detailing. You'll also notice a stand, a Captain Kirk Minimate with accessories, and a bagful of Tribbles. Well, it looks like there's a lot of work ahead. Can Captain Kirk pull it all together? The assembly was surprisingly scary, with a few of the pieces taking quite a bit of effort to snap into place (and doing so with quite a bit of noise). However, nothing broke and everything seems sturdy once fit together so my fears were probably unfounded. The more cartoon-y style flatters the U.S.S Enterprise NCC-1701, as its cuteness is out of this solar system. The Enterprise features a lot of painted on detail as well as some opening compartments. The top of the ship can flip open to reveal the bridge but, since I don't have either the chair or the stickers in yet, let's take a look at the stand. The stand consists of three pieces. The middle piece (closer to the bottom) can be removed which gives you an adjustable height. While I'll probably keep the Enterprise lower down (so it has less distance to fall if I accidentally knock it over), it's great that we have the option of displaying it a bit higher up, which I imagine works well when you have several ships displayed next to one another. Speaking of options, the captain's chair can be placed on either the ship's bridge or, by mounting it on a separate piece, displayed separately outside the Enterprise. The chair itself looks great and features sculpted details instead of just being painted on. It's tiny yet seems to contain a lot of detail. At any rate, I suppose it's time to stop procrastinating and actually decorate the bridge with those stickers. Stickers terrify me. I'm always worried about not placing them properly, which leads to either a wrinkle or the thing being off-center. Sure, you can pull them back a little to reset them, but it messes with the adhesive and makes the other big sticker issue — the risk of tearing the sticker itself — all the more likely. Thankfully, Diamond Select toys has seen fit to include two identical sticker sheets just in case you're, well, me (or I am you?) or equally clumsy. The stickers (thankfully) just consist of two long sheets. At first glance I had assumed that I'd have to individually place about a dozen stickers which is basically just asking for trouble. As it was, the first sticker went on fine while the second had some minor scrunching although the problem is only really noticeable up close; there's definitely some room for failure without messing up the display value of the bridge. The stickers depict various displays and control consoles, as well as a door at the rear of the bridge. The screens are set to all sorts of presumably unrelated stuff (spaceships, planets, star clusters, etc, although one looks like Deep Space Station K-7, which appeared in the episode) which I assume was done to make things more interesting. It does a nice job of providing detail to the bride while fitting in the with the Minimates style. I imagine it may have been even cuter if the spaceships displayed on the screen looked more Minimate-inspired, although that might be a very hard trick to pull off. Having discussed some the particulars of the ship in detail (we'll get into the features in a little bit), I'd like to take a moment to take a look at the accessories. First up is the enterprising Captain James Tiberius Kirk. The dashing captain features a green outfit (meant to depict the greenish-yellow one seen in the episode) and the most adorable smugly self-assured little smirk. This version of Kirk is exclusive to the set. The Creature from the Black Lagoon seen fighting Kirk is sold separately in a completely different Minimates series. Second we have a growing number of tribbles. For those unfamiliar with a tribble (or the concept behind them), these small, furry aliens are considered dangerous despite their relatively harmless appearance since they have the ability to get into just about anything and possess both enormous appetites as well as a speedy reproduction cycle. As such, one tribble quickly becomes ten becomes a hundred becomes a thousand becomes, well, too many to handle at which point you're in big tribble (or in a big pile of tribbles). The set contains around forty tribbles (I say "around" because I have about thirty-nine of them and I assume that I lost no more than one or two... I guess that's the trouble with tribbles?). The tribbles are fabric balls colored brown, gray, or white. While just tiny bits of material, they're surprisingly cute, although that really comes from knowing what they're supposed to represent and, given how few physical features the original tribbles had, these little puff balls are ideal representations. It's certainly a creative way to put together a new set. Both of the "Bussard Ramscoop" (again, I believe this what the orange things are called) are removable and feature some space where you can store tribbles. The engineering section can flip open to reveal the Jeffries Tube which, coincidentally, makes for another good tribble storage place. In short, (and to repurpose a Jay-Z verse) I got forty (or so) tribbles but a place to store them ain't one. All things considered, Diamond Select Toys' Star Trek Minimates "The Trouble with Tribbles" U.S.S. Enterprise is a pretty neat set with around forty reasons why fans may prefer it over other versions. Besides that, it comes with what's probably my favorite version of Captain Kirk so far. [Big thanks to Diamond Select Toys for sending over this review sample]
