Tomopop Review: McFarlane's The Walking Dead Riot Gear Zombie

Jul 03 // Vanessa Cubillo
Figure Name: The Walking Dead Riot Gear ZombieFigure Manufacturer: McFarlaneRetail Price: US$14.99Available At: Entertainment Earth Starting with the box, I was surprised that McFarlane's The Walking Dead line came in a small, easy to open box. When I think of McFarlane's packaging, I think of big, thick, plastic packaging that's a hassle to open. This is easy to open! Behind the figure, the backing shows the prison that will be a huge part of the show. Like standard toy packaging, the back shows the other figures in the series that you can potentially own.  Standing at five inches tall, this zombie is dressed entirely in riot gear, just as the name suggests. Coming with 20 points of articulation, I found that this figure moved very stiff. I guess that should be a positive, because they nailed what a corpse should move like.  The arms can move back and forth, and from side to side just fine. The legs don't really move at all. They can move slightly at the thigh, bend at the knee, and move at the feet. Still, as a whole, the legs are hard to move. From head to toe, this figure is also detailed realistically to look like he's wearing riot gear. I especially like the padded detail on the back of the vest.  The face is the most gruesome part of this figure. A zombie's face is not a thing of beauty after all. This poor soul has striking blue eyes, and half his skin melted off his face. It's a very bloody sight. You can see the blood run down the neck and see splashes of it on the uniform.  The helmet is another nicely designed part and is functional. The visor can move up and down over the zombie's face. Made of clear, hard, plastic, it's also splattered with blood. When it goes up, you can push it all the way to the back of the helmet. When you move it down, it covers the face completely. So you get to decide if you like staring at that hungry looking face. Also, if you hadn't noticed, this figure also comes with a nice, big knife stuck in the side of his throat. That knife is removable! So you pull that weapon out and can see the end of the blade is covered in blood. Cute detail. The knife can be used as an accessory that fits in the hand. I didn't like doing that though, because what kind of zombie attacks with a weapon? So I liked keeping the knife in the neck. You can also repeatedly pretend to stab the figure with the weapon and have fun. It's very easy to take out and insert the knife because it goes into a small slot. That slot fits the knife exactly and there's no danger of it falling out. So if you're looking for a prison zombie to attack your survivors, but moves stiffly to do so, this zombie has you covered.  [Thank you very much to Entertainment Earth for providing the review sample!]

Tomopop Summer Movie Toy Preview: The Prince of Persia

May 27 // Andres Cerrato
McFarlane ToysThe Prince of Persia action figure line is divided up into two sets: the familiar 4" and 6" figures. McFarlane's effort is what you would normally expect from them. Detailed sculpts, featuring the complete acting range and facial expressions of Jake Gyllenhaal with just one figure, and absolutely zero points of articulation for the 6" line. Just like their Sportspicks, they are quite detailed, but don't expect them to do much else than stand there. For the first series of figures, there is Dastan in his warrior and desert gear, Zolm, and Ghazab. The 6" figures retail for $9.99 each. If you actually want to pose the Prince in situations that could possibly reflect the game, you'll be aiming for 4" line. The figures feature the same type of joints in McFarlane's Halo line, with 12 points of articulation in each figure. The character line-up is pretty much the same, with the only change being that Ghazab is switched out in favor of Setam. These figures retail for $6.99 each. There are also accessories for the 4" line, with the two main attractions being the Prince's horse Aksh and a playset featuring the Alamut Gate. Both of these sets will include another figure of Dastan, but he's wearing a cape this time. For most visiting here though, I'm sure that the horse can be better used for other projects than recreating this movie. Now surely some kid will get the idea that jumping from building to building with a magical dagger that could possibly turn back time to avoid that decision to jump off their roof to the tree and down the slide without getting injured. For all 293 of those potential youth, there's the toy Sands of Time dagger replica. It features mysterious writing plus it lights up. Thankfully it does not actually reverse time, as its real purpose is to ensure the progress of social Darwinism. $9.99 is a small price to pay to avoid the possible offspring of future generations. LEGOI'm more intrigued by the sets from Lego than I am the sets of the movie. A total of 5 new sets are added to the LEGO Universe. You have your choice of the Desert Attack, the Ostrich Race, the Fight for the Dagger, Quest Against Time, or the behemoth of the Battle of Alamut. The sets start out at $12.49 for the Desert Attack (read: collection of minifigs) and $79.99 for the Battle of Alamut (read: cheaper and more entertaining than taking your family of four to see The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.) Hot ToysIs there not a single summer action movie that Hot Toys is not making figures for? For the newest addition to the Movie Masterpiece line, Prince Dastan makes the cut. While it's just a preview tease, I'm sure that it will be just as glorious as everything Hot Toys has produced this year. I expect that the figure would be in time for the home video release and cost around the $150-$170 range.Figures are available at toy retailers nationwide, Entertainment Earth, and BigBadToyStore.

Show and Tell: The wild rumpus begins

Oct 16 // Jason Millward
Feeling incredibly restless on one special morning, the wild things embarked on a long trek to the far end of the land.Arriving at their destination, they tried to enjoy themselves. Even in a new location, their boredom remained.Until the tiny Goat-Boy spied a ship arriving at shore. The others ran as fast as they could to see the cause of Goat-Boy's excitement. This was something new! From the boat stepped a boy dressed as a wolf. Moishe would gain enjoyment from scaring the child. But the boy was not scared. He returned the mean gaze without so much as a blink in his eyes. The others watched in awe. This was cause for a special celebration. They knew this fearless child would return excitement to their lives. They climbed and climbed until they reached their special place... ...where they proclaimed Max the King of all wild things.Max's first decree as ruler of the land was a simple one. He roared out to his new subjects, "Let the wild rumpus begin!" Moishe, Tzippy, and the rest of the creatures were overjoyed. This was exactly the sort of adventure for which they had been craving.Emil came alive with a newfound energy as they frolicked across the land.  This old world that they had become so dull to them, was suddenly fresh and new.Aaron climbed to new heights that day. He was amazed to find new areas to explore. Much of this once tired, old world had been taken for granted. As the sun began to descend from the sky, Max wanted a new place to play with his new friends.Bernard and Tzippy lead the way, taking Max deeper into the forest. The wild things were surprised to discover the beauty that they had taken for granted. This world contained enjoyment and surprises at nearly every turn. They simply needed someone to show them where to look. What fun they could have amongst each other! How could they have forgotten? The sun was setting. It would soon be dark.Surely the night would bring an end to their enjoyment."No way," shouted Max. The adventure would continue so long as he still had the strength to move. The creatures were overjoyed. Max would outlast them all. They could hardly keep up with the boy's energy and enthusiasm.Max called the wild things all together. He told them scary stories that made their hair, fur, and feathers stand on end.But something was missing. A night like this called for a campfire. They happily set out to fulfill his wish. Now, this was a perfect night! The monsters roared. The monsters howled. They danced and they played... ...until they all had run out of energy. Even Max had reached his limit of fun for the day.The wild things made their king a place to sleep. They went back to their own resting spots to sleep for the rest of the night.Morning came and Max ran to his boat. He was ready to return home. The wild things were very upset and even angered. "We love you so!"" "You can't leave." "We'll eat you up!" Max payed them no attention and went on his way. They were saddened and they each dealt with it in their own ways. They would always be thankful that he came, for he showed them all that their boring old world was a wonderful place. All they needed was to remember how to have fun. I want to thank Tom for his time and talents in helping to knock this project out of the park. Thanks also to Sandy Stenzel, who managed to find me the final figure for my collection all those years ago. And to Andrea Barbee for adding the book to my collection. Most of all, I want to thank my friends, both new and old, who have reminded me how to have fun again. This one's for you!
