NYCC 2012: Mattel - Watchmen photo

MattyCollector unveiled the next two Watchmen figures, Silk Spectre II and Nite Owl II, for its Club Black Freighter at NYCC. And, thanks to Preternia, we can show you photos of them.

While the six figures for this club have been known from the beginning, there's still been a good amount of curiosity in regards to how the figures will turn out. Thus far the line has been at least mildly disappointing given that they seem to just recycle bits from Mattel's DC Universe brands leaving one reporter to wonder why they bothered establishing this as a separate club at all.

That said, Mattel's Nite Owl II remarkably captures the character's comic appearance. Even the use of color seems spot on. The figure seems to feature the standard DC Universe Classics body mold under a completely new character-specific cloak in addition to a possibly new belt. The parts themselves may seem bland but, once again, the head sculpt and paint help make the figure look exceptional. I'm assuming that he'll probably have severely impeded movement due to the cloak (since it seems to lack a clasp of some sort) up until the thing tears at the top. Otherwise he comes with a grappling gun and some sort of projectile that I really hope won't be molded into his hand on the final release.

Silk Spectre II is nowhere near as impressive with her see-through dress (showing a swimsuit underneath?) and less flattering paintwork. (I also hate to admit that I never realized that it was a see-through in the comic.) The sleeves, which I assume should use the same material, are apparently just a solid plastic. Plus I can't say that I care for the consistently of the translucent plastic used for the dress since it has what looks to be a mottled color to it and the molded plastic appears a poor fit given that it's not exactly form-fitting. You'll probably notice a bit of putty in some of her leg joints. Just remember that it's only there for stability and the final version likely won't need anything of the sort. And fans of the film should keep in mind that this character's outfit varied greatly in the comics and reflected a more period-centric design.

I feel entirely justified in not signing up for Club Black Freighter because, thus far, the only figure to really wow me has been Nite Owl II. Doc Manhattan seems like a lackluster complete remold, Rorschach is decent but the color strikes me as being a little off, and Silk Spectre II just seems like sort of a mess. Naturally, the two characters I most wanted to see (Ozymandias and the Comedian) have been saved for the very end. I'm really hoping that they turn out the best of the bunch although I expect to at least buy the Comedian regardless.

Does anybody really like the look of Silk Spectre II?
