Mortal Kombat's Raiden electrifies SDCC with an exclusive action figure from Jazwares photo

Jazwares is making full use of their license of the graphic fighter Mortal Kombat. We've recently seen them announce figures from the recent title as well as a take on the classics. Of course now that San Diego Comic Con is around the corner, it only makes sense for the company to make an exclusive figure available.

The company has chosen the god of lightning Raiden as their exclusive. The Lightning Fury Raiden 6 inch figure has been given the clear plastic treatment with lightning bolts drawn all over his body. Seems underwhelming, right? What if I told you that he also glows in the dark? Anything that glows in the dark is a bonus! It's a nifty feature that's very fitting of the character.

Once again, Toys"R"Us and Entertainment Earth have their hands on this exclusive figure. If you're at the convention, check out Entertainment Earth's booth to buy this figure. Those who cannot make it to SDCC can order it online through the special Toys"R"Us SDCC page the same day the convention starts.

San Diego Comic Con starts July 21, 2011 and will run through July 24, 2011. Be sure to keep your eyes on Tomopop as we bring you coverage of the event.

It's actually a really neat deco, especially with the lightning detailing. Too bad the sculpt sucks.

What's so bad about the sculpt? The giant pins? Cause other than them it's not that bad.

Giant pins, head looks a bit small, facial sculpt is a little weird, his eyes appear to be different sizes, and the shoulder flaps look a little silly.
In general, the body build kinda reminds me a lot of wrestling figures which I'm not a fan of. The big things are the head size and exposed pins, though, I guess.

OK, fair enough. Unfortunately that's how figures have to be here in NA (well other than the head, which I don't think is too big). Because these figures will be sold for something like $10-15, we can't expect them to be perfect when it comes to details or sculpt. Sure it would be great if these figures looked like an S.H. Figuarts or a Figma figure, but then the price would be more in line with $40, which to the general publich would be an absurd price for essentially a toy. I think for what it is it looks alright though.

You see, the thing about that is other US lines have done fairly good jobs. NECA has had some exceptional sculpts and pain apps at times, Mattel has multiple lines with very nice sculpts (their 4" DC Infinite Heroes being a major exception), Diamond Select has really done some impressive work (albeit somewhat low on articulation at times), and Hasbro has numerous lines where they create at least passable figures. Even DC Direct has done real quality figures as well.

In fact, even Jazwares has done better with detail. Their A-Team line, which also suffered from silly exposed joints, didn't look bad in terms of general detail. They just completely botched the headsculpts in terms of character likeness (except in the case of Bradley Cooper where the head looks somewhat fine, but the body was really bland; the Murdoch was pretty nice all around, though).

However, I will say that I'd be infinitely amused to see these done in the figma line XD Granted, they can do muscle pretty well (if Billy Harrington is any indication) but the line heavily eschews male characters.
