Anyone who's a big conspiracy theory nut or just likes reading about the unexplained mysteries of the world has probably heard of the infamous Antikythera Mechanism at some point or another. Found in a shipwreck near Antikythera, Greece, researchers long had no clue what this device could possibly be--only that somehow, the ancient Greeks managed to craft some kind of working mechanism with clockwork comparable to well-known Swiss watchmakers in the 19th century--nearly 2000 years later.
Thanks to years of study and replications, we now know that the mechanism tracked calendar dates, eclipses, and even followed the dates of the ancient Olympics and other games. Now, as you might guess, the picture above is yet another replica of the creation--simpler than ancient clockwork, but certainly no less impressive! Andrew Carol, an engineer for Apple, created this working replica out of a mass of Lego parts, and it's certainly a sight to behold! It's hard to tell just what does what, but fortunately you can glimpse a video to see how Carol designed his Antikythera, and just how it all comes together. Very inspiring stuff for the Lego hobbyist!
