Jazwares Sonic the Hedgehog figures preview photo

Anybody who knows me knows that I am one of the most die-hard Sonic the Hedgehog fans out there. I own several of the Sonic collections, all the 3D games and actually think they're not that bad. Yeah, I know, fanboyism, right? So you'd expect that I absolutely love this early look at Jazware's new Sonic the Hedgehog toys, right?

Make like Sonic and make that jump to learn more.

Back in February, we ran a preview of some of the toys Jazwares was making for the (then) new Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing game. These look to be made from the same techniques as the standing figures in that line, but are probably just going to be from the regular Sonic line. That said, these figs look awfully....jointy. Is that a word? I'm going to make that a word. In this preview set we see figures of Super Sonic and Super Shadow (I've always preferred Hyper Shadow or Bright Shadow, personally) as well as ninja lizard Espio the Chameleon and rockin' reptile Vector the Crocodile.

Super Sonic and Super Shadow will be available in a three pack with Super Silver (ahem, Golden Silver, thank you very much) and come with all seven Chaos Emeralds as an accessory. Espio and Vector will be bundled as a two pack with a comic book. One would assume that a later two pack with Mighty the Armadillo and Charmy Bee to be forthcoming, but nothing has as yet been announced. There will be, however, a clear -"invisible"- variant of Espio at a later date. One hopes that that version comes with some kunai and a leaf hurricane, but I'm not holding out hope for that.

I'm no professional toy designer, but would it really have been so hard to give at least the hedgehogs some bendy-arms to prevent those really standout joints there? I mean, they're not so bad on a bigger character like Vector, but they're practically killing the aesthetic of Sonic and Shadow up there.

Oh well. At least Sonic 4 will be good, right?

...right?!

MOAR Jazwares:

Legacy Comments

I missed that original article (probably because you need to check this site every 15 minutes or you miss something -_-), but I saw the first batch in stores and thought it looked... okay. The figures may look jointy (partly due to the small scale, partly because they made little effort to conceal them), but it's more practical than bendy arms/legs which lose elasticity over time until they break from wear (I had a LOT of crippled bendies as a kid).

Although the highly visible articulation might be part of it, I think the sculpts & paint also haven't thrilled me for this line. The only one I ended up picking up was the werewolf Sonic (and then, only because he was a werewolf) but I may not have seen the entire first wave in stores.
Its funny to me cause these figures seem so dull to me but apparently someone is buying them as they disappear from the shelves at Toysrus pretty quickly in my area. They arent bad toys mind you, they are done well but theres nothing terribly interesting about them not to mention Sonic has been terrible for so long now that these are odd choices to support and entire toy line around when they arent terribly popular with gamers.
I like the crocodile, but that's mostly because I just plain like crocs and 'gators alike.

In general I don't care all that much for Jazwares product, but I do think I'd pick up Vector if the price seems right (meaning if it's reasonably close to whatever individual Star Wars figures cost that day).
Oh God yes. @.@ Must get Espio and Vector... Although I do agree that the jointy-ness of the figures is a bit of a turn off, but I'm glad to see that neither Espio or Vector look quite as bad as the others. Granted I could just be looking through tinted glasses with my love for the Chaotix boys XD
