Hey guys, check out this BEAR GUNDAM photo

It is a little known fact that I greatly enjoy building model kits. I find it relaxing, but I have not picked up a new one in quite some time. Partly because of laziness, and partly because none have really called to me in a while. That is, until I saw this BEAR GUNDAM. He is a gundam.... AND ALSO A BEAR. His name is Bearguy. HOW AMAZING IS THIS.

Okay, now that I have calmed down a bit I can tell you all about this little dude. He is a 1/144 HG kit, and he comes with a backpack. He can do all sorts of awesome things like breakdance, fly, and stretch his arms out to uncanny lengths. Don't believe me? Check out the gallery! This little rascal just got released, but you can still pick him up at AmiAmi for the low price of 1,310 yen. There's a limit of 3 per person... guess how many I got!

That's uh... actually somewhat tempting. Never really made a model kit before, and the cheap price plus the fact that it's cute (and not a Gundam which I have not attachment to) makes it a good choice. Not sure if I'll go for it or not, though.
Well, technically, he's not a Gundam. ^^;

Why are you crushing my dreams. ;~;
What constitutes a Gundam really? I always figured it was the signature head V.
Not a Gundam.
Does not have a V-fin or 2 "eyes"
Based off the Zeon Aquatic Mobile Suit MSM-04 Acguy. It's from the series Gunpla Builder. its designed and built by a little girl. It also comes with a tiny recorder in its backpack that you should be able to attach to it's mouth.
News of it has been out since the model line was announced. Good to see they finally released it.
I'd make mine a polarbear when I get mine....
Wonder how many people are going to mod it to be a pedobear seeing as it's already in it's colors >.>
Yeah, an Acguy is not a Gundam. There is a difference. As an actual Gundam fan and not someone who acts like they are and buys a bunch of shitty models because Omg so Kawaii desu, calling a random ms a "gundam" is insulting. You could have used your parents' money a lot better.
Leah, as a Lewis Carroll fan I say you should just ignore those telling you that this is not a Gundam. If you want the definition of Gundam to include bears with extendable arms, than the definition includes bears with extendable arms whether anyone wants it to or not.
I reckon you should get Stephen to order three for you so that way you can get six.
This bear has a kindergartner's backpack on? I wonder who the pilot could be? Maybe 4chan knows...
From a Gundam series but based off a non Gundam mobile suit.

Also I don't know how calling a random ms from a Gundam series a "gundam" is supposed to be insulting. Always heard rumors of how some Gunpla guys are crazy but this is the first time I've seen it up front.
Gundam is a fairly specific term when used to identify mobile suits. If you say, "Gundam model kit" that's fine. Referring to this as "Bear Gundam" is incorrect though. Being that this suit is based on the Principality of Zeon's MSM-04 Acguy, there is no way that this could be called a "Gundam" by any definition.

In terms of identifying what is and is not a Gundam, it lies in name alone (and that's left to the minds at Bandai/Sunrise). It depends on the series what the definition is, and even those series don't strictly adhere to them. For example, in Wing it's the use of Gundanium Alloy that gives them the name Gundam. However, every suit from the Mercurius/Vayate onward uses that material, so they're all technically Gundams but are not because they're not called that. In UC, it's a name given to the Earth Federation's experimental units with the V-antenna in honor of the original RX-78-2 Gundam. In SEED, the militaries don't refer to ANY of the units as Gundams. It was just something that Kira noticed for an acronym in the OS and Lacus said it sounded good. For 00, it was the name given to the units produced by Celestial Being.

Essentially, if the term "Gundam" appears in the name, it's a Gundam regardless. If it's not in the name, it's not. Simple as that. I'll go back to studying the Black History for now.
> JDavis
Refer to my previous post.

>Shiro11
To me, its not that its insulting. It just shows the writer really didn't take time to research it before posting. Especially since they left out information and features of the model.

LOL, this from a fanperson in a fandom who has stuff like A GUNDAM WEARING A SOMBRERO. Oh, and can't forget the Cuban one that looks suspiciously like he's wearing Castro's iconic hat, too.

...oh wait, some of the self-appointed "hardcore" fans don't consider Mobile Fighter G-Gundam to be a "real" Gundam series, despite the name being on the title and all, and officially considered to be part of the "alternate realities/universes" that several\ of the more successful/appreciated non-UC series also fall under! My bad.

Really, you need to work on that trigger, whoever you are. Just repeat to yourself, "They're just GIANT ROBOTS, I should really just relax." (For Mystery Gunda- ok, I'll stop now.)
This was a sociological experiment to see how people would react to a bear being called a gundam, because you know mermaid gundams are totes kosher but not bears and all that.

Conclusion: NOT SO WELL.
This was a sociological experiment to see how people would react to a bear being called a gundam, because you know mermaid gundams are totes kosher but not bears and all that.

Nice try to cover up your mistake.

First off, to do such a petty thing as to attempt to get reactions from Gundam fans, who frequent the site fairly often, on a fairly professional site is, simply put, incredibly stupid.

Again, RESEARCH is key. Which is evident you DID NOT do by the phrase "because you know mermaid gundams are totes kosher but not bears and all that."

Really all you are doing is hurting your reputation.

P.S. I've been trying to help. Putting me off as a troll and it just shows how close minded you are.

@WakiMiko

Light-hearted articles will not be accepted. NO JOKES CAN BE MADE ABOUT GUNDAMS.

Leah, you are unprofessional because you do not share the same high minded expertise about gundams that I do. I am the kind of person who gets offended over an article about somebody who's obviously writing a fun silly article and not a theory about the politics of the Gundam universe.

@WakiMiko

Um, what is there to research? I hardly believe if Leah was talking about hard facts she would consider a bear to be a gundam. But she's not. She's not trying to prove anything by means of research. Her point is to highlight a fun item through means of exaggeration, and uh, fun?

Please try harder to miss the point next time SUPER GUNDAM FAN! : )
Oh snap, Chris is bringing down the house.
Chris call me what you will, I was trying to help.

a. Show me where exactly in the post this was to be a joke post.

b. I never claimed to know more. I just said you need to research before posting (which should be especially true if you are posting on something that isn't your forte)

c. refer to b. If you're doing something that is not your strong suit make sure you get your shit right.

Just wait till you have to face this situations in real life and not the internet... then feel free to call someone who tries to help an elitist jerk. Good luck finding real people to back you up when this happens.
Post was the comment. "great reading comprehension there buddy"
So under that logic if I have a plush that makes it a vinyl because I found it on the toys section?

Hm... I didnt know berrating people for trying to be informative was part of being a comic editor, go figure.
If I had the money to spend right now, I would buy this in a heartbeat just because of this comment thread.
Okay, here is the part of the post which made me think Leah was just having fun.

"That is, until I saw this BEAR GUNDAM. He is a gundam.... AND ALSO A BEAR. His name is Bearguy. HOW AMAZING IS THIS."

The post was meant to be informative in showing you that the item exists. But it was also meant to be fun, and this quote sets the tone for the whole "message". To me, I find this funny. Because a bear being a gundam is ridiculous. I hardly believe that she really thinks it's a legit gundam. I'm surprised that anyone would be confused by the context she's writing in.

Okay...Here's an example. I'm a huge berserk fan. There are these things called beherit which look like eggs. They also have faces. They're little pendants which are keys to a demon world, simply put. Now pretend that there is a beherit toy which is colored like an egg with a yolk pouring out of it. A post could be made about this, with the presenter saying "LOOK, IT'S A BEHERIT EGG!, IT'S AN EGG AND IT'S ALSO A BEHERIT! HOW AMAZING IS THIS?"

I could reply and say "Okay, are you serious? a Beherit is a key presented to a character through causality, it is obviously not an egg, but a means through which an entity reaches the abyss where the God Hand reside"

But I'm missing the point. They didn't really mean an egg and a Beherit are the same thing.

It's obvious the two are not the same thing, and taking offense to such a thing when they are very clearly not the same thing is well...quite silly. I come off looking high minded, because I missed what was clearly presented in a light hearted manner and turned it into something it isn't.
Fine, I'll be specific. If a plush dunny was listed in the Kid Robot section that means its a vinyl.
Wonderful examples of ad hominids btw.
Was wondering why the comments ammount doubled in like an hour.

Been a gundam fan and gunpla builder for over 10 years and I just can't understand why people get so worked up over this.
@WicketOrin

I'm finding it to be strangely alluring myself.
I don't see why people here are so hellbent on defending ignorance. Things need to be properly identified as what they are. It's as simple as this - all Gundams are mobile suits, but not all mobile suits are Gundams. It's no different from saying that all Porsches are cars, but not all cars are Porsches. If someone said "Hey look at this Porsche!" and it was really a Mustang, wouldn't someone correct them? Why would it be ok to allow the mistake to pass?
This has gotten a bit out of control, and I'd just like to clarify that I KNOW that this is not technically a Gundam. I did when I wrote the post. As several other people have already said, I was joking. There are mermaid and windmill and cactus and horse gundams, and this is probably as close as we'll get to a bear gundam. So yeah... I am not being ignorant or not doing my research. I was making a lighthearted joke about a goofy figure based on something from the gundam universe.
You can say that it was a "joke" but no one reads it that way, and it just sounds to me (and others) that it's just backpedaling to cover up your own ignorance about the subject.. Is it a joke or a social experiment? Take your pick and stick to one, please.
The POST was joking. And according to the comments, several people read it that way. Saying it was a social experiment was obviously facetious, I didn't write a post as an experiment. I wasn't backpedaling, I was making light of a ridiculous situation. I don't know why this is such a big deal. I know it's not a gundam as I have said before, and I was obviously joking originally.

I find it hilarious that we all engage in a hobby where arguing about the classification of a bear robot is considered by everyone involved to be a legitimate conversation.
Chris:

No, you're the jackass. You keep bringing up G Gundam suits that have no relevance at all, as if their ridiculous design is making some kind of point. Follow your own advice and stop being a jackass before you ever dare to call me anything.
I'm not the one who has butthurt feelings here. You're the one making stupid arguments to defend ignorance. Stop being an ass and get over yourself.
If you get pleasure from being (rightfully) called a jackass, then apparently you're into some weird stuff. Keep up the idiocy.
You're the troll who can't understand that your arguments are wrong. Being a self-important elitist who posts pictures of G Gundam mecha doesn't make you right, it just makes you a weak troll. I'm laughing at every ridiculous thing you've written, because it just really shows you don't know at all what you're talking about. You might as well just give up, because you're defending the indefensible.
The problem isn't that something incorrect was said. The problem here is reveling in ignorance and coming up with half-assed excuses to explain it away and attacking people who are pointing out the mistake. Keep laughing, because clearly you're being a complete idiot about this. I have nothing more to say to someone who's so blind and such a dick. Keep on being such an ass, and happy holidays!
Okay, Arguing aside...

@Chris

If you would've read some of the replies you would know that several of us took it as just that. A joke. Because that's what it is. If you look at it from a technical standpoint, then yeah, she's wrong. But if you look at everything technically then nothing is funny.

She was never trying to make a technical assertion about what and what isn't a gundam. Assuming so is ridiculous.

There's nothing to explain. Because it was a joke. We're trying to explain to you that it flew right over your head. Zoom! There it goes.

Just so you know. I really like you now for this comment. Ownage of trolls with logic. It's always appreciated, the great lord Mogo approves.
Okay, just got back from the ol' job, and now I feel bad that I apparently missed the COMEDY PARTY OF THE (UNIVERSAL?) CENTURY, and this is now on page 2, and you might not see my reply. :( But I thank you for the compliment!

Anyway... eheh, I now feel like it's largely my fault that this got out of hand, just because I was the first to bring up G-Gundam, which seems to be a bit of a sore spot - or a fount of whimsical hilarity, depending on who you ask. ^^;;

Anyway, the POINT was simple: You guys are getting worked up over GIANT ROBOTS. And here's the kicker - most of the early robot (giant robots included) shows? They were pretty whimsical in nature.

Sure, they often had their more serious or even outright dark moments (yes, even Astroboy/Tetsuwan Atom, one of the grandaddies of many, many Japanese [and even foreign!] modern robot stories), but at the core of can be found one simple theme, and that's man's dream/desire of creating things that were somehow both a reflection of us (and/or how we view ourselves), and in some ways, also larger than themselves, whether sentient (Astroboy for example... most cyborgs fit the bill too, for that matter, since they're like the biggest fusion of "ourselves" with "our creations". Transformers could also be considered, but they're more of an alien race that HAPPENS to be made up of what we consider "robots," rather than having been created by human hands.), non-sentient (ex: robots that require an operator/pilot for it to function), or blends of the two (Lagann from Gurren Lagann is a possible example to this, as he normally requires Simon to operate him, despite
at least one time having shown some kind of action without a pilot at the helm[END SPOILER].).

...or they all just really wanted to have fun/releive some stress and see the stuff they dreamed up beat the (non-)living crap out of each other. (And/or have some people perv over it, too.)

And oh yeah, some of you guys talk about all this supposed "misinformation" (despite the tone of the post being very obviously whimsical, even more so when Leah's first reply to the thread when told it was "not a Gundam" was "stop crushing my dreams!") being "insulting," I find it a *million* times more offensive and insulting that one of you (as in, the person I originally responded to) called a little girl's dream design of a cuddly GIANT ROBOT bear (which, as I note, ONE OF YOU pointed out that's where it originated from) a "shitty model," JUST because it doesn't look like whatever YOU envision a "Gundam" or other GIANT ROBOT model to be. And not because "she's a kid and they get breaks" or anything - this model could've been designed by a 25-year-old autistic fellow whose favorite comfort in difficult moments is an old teddy bear, or a 90-year-old spinster who spent her life collecting bear figures and plushes because she found them cute. Heck, it could've been designed by just some random person who's never had a care or worry in their life, and just wanted to have some fun with their customs, and have nothing significant attached to it. It's STILL very offensive. WAY TO BE A JERK, DUDE.

(Oh, and before anyone starts going "But wah wah, what about crap like the now-defunct Taki, people are behind those things too, should we all just be shiny happy flowers and rainbow-farts and not have opinions?", I'll just say THAT WAS NOT MY POINT AT ALL, WAY TO MISS IT. This wasn't about technical criticisms or whatever you feel like nitpicking, this is about all of you trying to rain on someone else's parade because YOU don't like the particular way they're having fun.)

Oh, and, dude who said:

I don't see why people here are so hellbent on defending ignorance. Things need to be properly identified as what they are. It's as simple as this - all Gundams are mobile suits, but not all mobile suits are Gundams. It's no different from saying that all Porsches are cars, but not all cars are Porsches. If someone said "Hey look at this Porsche!" and it was really a Mustang, wouldn't someone correct them? Why would it be ok to allow the mistake to pass?

Way to miss the forest for the trees, man.

NO ONE is trying to defend "ignorance" here - someone made a tongue-in-cheek post because she found the robot-bear model too adorably off-the-wall to not be silly about it, which people have REPEATEDLY been trying to explain to you they were being silly about in return, and yet it somehow this manages to fly over your head EACH AND EVERY TIME.

You know, this could've been ENTIRELY avoided if (most of) you guys had simply NOT BEEN HIGH-HANDED JACKASSES in how you presented yourselves. Just a simple "Hey Leah, that's actually an Acguy. Did you make a mistake in the writeup?" and given her a chance to explain she was kidding would've gone a LONG way - I've noticed in my short while here that other commenters point out mistakes and typos ALL THE TIME, and guess what? THEY USUALLY GET CORRECTED/EXPLAINED. But for that to happen, YOU NEED TO NOT BE A JERK ABOUT IT.

And G-Gundam is entirely relevant to the whole topic. If you don't realize why, then I guess there's probably no hope for you to understand what's causing you to get dismissed as an elitist nitpick.

(Oh, and while we're here, I feel like asking a side question: What exactly would you do when something CAN'T be "properly" identified as what it is? To use your fandom as an example, what if something was a mobile suit and a Gundam, but then it was also NOT a Gundam? Or maybe not even a mobile suit at all? What would you do then? I know, entirely off-topic, but I felt like asking.)

So, in short:

"Oh, but Mobile Fighter G-Gundam isn't a REAL Gundam sho-" GIANT ROBOTS.
"Oh, but REAL Gundam shows are about the effects of war and humanity and-" GIANT ROBOTS.
"And what about Evangelion's struggles with the self and isolation an-" I DON'T CARE. GIANT ROBOTS.
"But Big O's exploration of what makes up our memories and how significant they are to ourse-" GIANT. GODDAMN. ROBOTS, $#@^$%%^$!!!

NOW do you guys understand my point? Thank you!

...oh yeah, and my other point: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is the greatest giant robot show of all, and you naysayers can bite me.

OH MY GOD.

Send that photo to the "other" Stephen like, RIGHT NOW.

You know who I'm talking about.

HE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS NEW THREAT TO HIS AMERICONE DREAM.
It's not your fault it got out of hand. It's anal people who can't stand someone possibly saying something that is slightly not 100% super serial about their precious. Hell you and supercrocoawesomedude were the really awesome folks in here. And anyway....BEARGUNDAM!

Ahahaha, well, I'm glad (relieved?) at least one person was amused/agrees. XD

And yeah, I've seen what happens when you get TOO bogged down in the details - you start to not have fun. I mean, I do love attention to details (without some, stuff would probably be very generic and hard to make memorable) and can even be nitpicky as hell (see: My everlasting fangirl-boner for all things Slayers-related), but if you start to obsessively focus on getting every single thing perfect and not allow for anything less than that, then it stops being enjoyable (and will often lead to the "death" of a fandom, too). And that's what I think fandom (and life in general) should try to be - a fun and entertaining ride.

Anyway... uh, hi? I've been lurking for some months now when I started really getting into figure collecting, and have randomly posted comments every now and then, but I think this is the first time I've posted at a real length, haha. ^_^;; Nice to meet you!
I hope this thread gets mentioned alot on the next podcast
Aww

I'm just going to say that Bearguy is awesome, semantics be damned. I just went to check on the ad...and he's sold out! Darn! Well, there's always eBay eventually ;)

Hope you enjoy your trio, Leah!
