 Go For Broke: Shunya Yamashita featuring Colette Bennett (NSFW) photo

Welcome to the article that keeps you from getting work done, Go For Broke!

This week I cover figures based off Shunya Yamashita's designs, which seem to be quite popular on Tomopop. It's a tall order to cover Yamashita, so I've brought in some reinforcements in the form of our lovely editor-in-chief, Ms. Colette Bennett. She joins me in solidarity as we drool over these lovely pieces of PVC.

Follow us after the jump to get an eyeful of luscious flesh...er, PVC. You know what I mean.

Rogue

Pedro says:

First up on the Yamashita roll call is Rogue, the energy-stealing mutant from X-Men. In what is probably a response to DC's Ame-Comi line (which has varying amounts of success), Marvel has definitely one-upped DC in the 'anime comic character' department by getting Yamashita to do the design. This version of Rogue is dressed in her classic X-Men outfit, which should please many a fan, including me! If you dig X-Men and have any love of anime, this is a must get.

Colette says:

I saw this one in person for the first time at Otakon this past weekend, and I was surprised to see she was smaller in person than I expected her to be. Still, that didn't detract from her overall loveliness, and she's also really well priced (I saw her for $60 at the show, and you can find her for less if you look around). While I'm not a big enough Rogue fan to buy her, anyone who is surely won't be disappointed!

Company: Kotobukiya

Release Date: late July 2009

Is it available? You can find her at a couple places online. I have seen her pop up at a couple local comic shops, so that's also another possible route.

Price: $48-$75. Kid Nemo has it the cheapest, so hit it up first to save some flow.

Available @ J-List  Kid Nemo  Hobby Fan

Karin

Pedro says:

Next up is Karin, a lovely lass covered by Bryan Coffee last October. Karin exists in several forms, since she was available as a pre-painted complete statue from E2046, as well as a garage kit and a bust. However, most will want Karin in her full, painted glory, as depicted by the above photo (from Danny Choo.) What I love about this statue is how amazingly sexy it is. Everything from the tattoos and make up to the expression on her face drips sex appeal, not to mention her complete lack of clothing.

Colette says:

I think of this as the Yamashita that got away. Kid you not, I have deep regret for not buying this figure, and I don't think I'll ever get over it unless I find her. The bust is lovely, but the full size figure really takes the cake. If you love Yamashita and you ever see this figure, don't miss out on the chance to buy her. Of course, everyone has their favorite of his designs, but this one is the best to me.

Company: Kotobukiya

Release Date: January or February 2008

Is it available? The bust can be found, but the full statue is pretty impossible to find. If you come across and got the scratch, pick it up because you're not likely to find it again.

Price: $70-$80

Bust Available @ Kid Nemo  Robert's Anime Corner Store  Hobby Fan

Nasuke

Pedro says:

Following the barely-clothed Karin is Nasuke, an armored lass who's armor isn't covering much. What I like about Nasuke is how she's suspended in mid-air. A lot of figures that have characters in that position are placed on the ground. It's a something a little different, but it makes it stand out, not unlike the bit of camel toe on display!

Colette says:

Nasuke is hot, and I love everything about her, including her unique position. As Pedro mentioned, her girl parts are definitely, ah, on display for the world to see. This is the only thing that turns me off about it personally (my eyes just end up on her vag all the time), but I would think most male collectors wouldn't mind. The details are insane and you can get her for a pretty good price, so I'd say this is a great choice to add to any collection.

Company: Art Storm

Release Date: Either August 2008 or January 2009

Is it available? Yep, she's easy to find.

Price: $56-$90

Available @ Hobby Link Japan  Kid Nemo  eStarland  Toys Logic  Robert's Anime Corner Store  Hobby Search  Hobby Fan  Power Anime  J-List

Arisa

Pedro says:

I may not be able to play a musical instrument, but I can appreciate the delicious curves of a guitar or a bass. Combine a guitar with a sexy lady and you've got my undivided attention. Arisa is a girl that tempts me every time I see her, what with her exposed midriff, tiny skirt, and long stockings. Add a cherry-red axe and you have a must own figure that might set your desk on fire!

Colette says:

I came super close to picking up Arisa at Otakon this year. Of the earlier Yamashita figures, this one is by far my favorite. As you can imagine, that skirt is removable too. If you dig a hot girl with a musical instrument in hand, this one is just a must have. And check out that underboob!

Company: Yamato

Release Date: February 2008

Is it available? She's kind of hard to find, though I have seen her several times online.

Price: $63-$68

Available @ Kid Nemo  eStarland  Robert's Anime Corner Store

Asuka

Pedro says:

Finally, I give to you something quite a bit harder to find. Awhile back, Chris Guanche of MAHQ.net guested on Go For Broke and one of the ladies he highlighted was Yamashita's version of Rei, the quiet and detached pilot from Evangelion. What a lot of people don't know is that Yamashita also did a version of Asuka, the loud and obnoxious pilot from Evangelion. Much like Rei, Yamashita has made Asuka a bit older and subsequently more sexy. This garage kit features a removable portion of Asuka's clothing so you can reveal her boobies, if that's your thing. If this was made into a widely available statue, I would order her ASAP.

Colette says:

I often hear Evangelion fans say that they don't care for Yamashita's versions of Rei and Asuka, and I can understand why even at a glance -- they are very sexualized versions of the characters. I haven't seen the series yet, and in a way I am kind of glad, because I adore this Asuka and I'd hate to feel differently! She's a bit pricey, yes, but for what you get this is a hell of a deal. Highly recommended if you have the cashflow!

Company: ORI

Release Date: Next pre-order date is for August 2009, though statues have been steadily coming out since early 2009.

Is it available? E2046 says that it's up for preorder again, though I know nothing else about it.

Price: $125

Available @ E2046

That's it for this week. Big ups to Colette for taking time out to help me with this article. Have a broke one!

MOAR Shunya Yamashita:

Legacy Comments

Great article! I really appreciate lessons in things I'm otherwise unaware of and getting the breakdown on the price and such really helps in deciding which to buy. I'd love to go for the Rogue- I've always been a fan of X-men.
I don't give a shit for Evangelion, but the Asuka is really badass.
I think the thing I love most about this article is that I own every one of these except for the busts. I had to have the full statues and I've never regretted buying a Shunya. Great Article.
@negativezero -- You own Karin! I envy you :D
@negativezero

Please photography the Karin and Asuka, as I'd love to see what they look like IRL.
@Colette

As someone who has seen Evangelion, I can assure you that Yamashita's sexualized, aged up versions are a huge improvement. :)
as requested, here are some pics. Luckily I reviewed the figure on my blog, Enjoy.

Asuka is currently still boxed (like most of my figs) but if you drop me a comment on my blog, I will do my best to do a photo shoot this week.
@negativezero -- Oh my gosh...they're so GORGEOUS! I burn with regret!
I have watched tons of EVA and I am more of a big time Rei fan to start but that Asuka kinda creeps me out, starting with the face in general. Asuka was sexual at times but in a completely different way than that statue implies.
I has the Arisa :)
I think I saw a guy this weekend with that Karin. Kinda wish I had known about the rarity of it.
@Andres Cerrato -- you...what? *cries*
