Welcome to the article that brings good fortune to you, but an uncertain future to your savings account. It's Go For Broke!
This week I'm covering Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, a series of RPG's known for its dead-serious stories and extremely long play times. Sobering to the point of cynicism, the stories for these games take quite a different path than your usual JRPG, acting as a breath of fresh air to a genre in desperate need of one. The games are must-plays for fans of RPG's, and have many must buy figures.
Follow me after the jump to get a peek at a few of them!
SPOILER WARNING: Some of these descriptions have spoilers in them, so reader beware!
Persona 3 FES: Metis

First up is Metis, the 'sister' of the android Aigis from Persona 3. She shows up in the semi-sequel to P3 called The Answer. In it, Aigis is tasked with searching the Abyss of Time after the events of the main game. She represents the emotional side of Aigis's personality which she abandoned after the main games conclusion.
Metis comes with several different faces and a movable visor. You can also have her hold her lance or a bus stop sign as pictured above. Personally, I'd stick with the sign for comedic value but hey, I'm a weird guy.
Company: Orchid Seed
Release Date: September 2008
Is it available? You can still find her around the internets.
Price: Between $66 and $82

Persona 3 FES: Elizabeth

Here stands Elizabeth, keeper of the Persona Compendium in P3. Although she may be gone in P4, her fans can keep a memento of her in the form of this fantastic PVC statue. Already reviewed by community member Komik City, I chose to feature Elizabeth just because she's a character that you wouldn't expect to get a statue. Most companies would've gone with another player character, but Alter either decided that Elizabeth was more interesting to make or the others were too boring. I'd say we lucked out, as Elizabeth is one of the best Persona statues out there.
Company: Alter
Release Date: October 2008
Is it available? You can still find her, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's impossible to find by years end.

Persona 4: Kuma/Teddie

It's wonderful when a show and/or game can use it's mascot character effectively to move along its plot. It's especially wonderful when that mascot character is a bad-ass bear with a heart of gold. Meet Teddie the bear-reffic resident of the TV world. He acts as your first navigator and eventually joins your party to kick some ass. He'll also melt your face with his assault of bad jokes and puns.
What's interesting with this figure is that it's a small vinyl statue, as compared to the other PVC figures I normally cover. This also makes him cheaper than most other statues, so if you're looking for a nice, cheap gift for a P4 fan, this Teddie is the way to go!
Company: Wave
Release Date: August 2009 is when most places get him, but some are getting him at the end of July all the way through the end of October 2009.
Price: A range of $24-$40

Persona 4: Kujikawa Rise (School Girl Ver.)

Next up is the lass who replaces Teddie as the navigator in P4, Rise. Formally an idol, Rise goes back to Inaba for a little R&R, only to find herself embroiled in the mess the Japanese Scooby Gang have been investigating. She's quite adorable, but her obsession with P4's protagonist is a bit off-putting. Oh well, few would argue with having an idol hard up on them.
There are two Rises coming out: one in the school outfit and the other in a bikini. Of the two, I would have to give the nod to the school girl version, even if it means snubbing Alter's usual excellence. Having a cute girl in a bikini is a wonderful thing (not to mention said girl having a cell phone with a Teddie charm on it!), but school girl Rise feels like it has more personality than the other one. Personal preference aside, I doubt anybody could go wrong with either figure.
Company: Wave
Release Date: October 2009, though several other places are getting her at the end of November or the beginning of December 2009.
Price: $66-$97. Quite the spread there, so I'd stick to Hobby Search or HLJ for the cheaper prices.

Persona 3: Main Character

Finally, I bring to you Kotobukiya's version of P3's silent protagonist. I don't know what it is about the design, but I really like P3's main character. Everything from his hair cut to how his uniform fits on him oozes style and really caught my attention in the advertising for the game. It's understandable why everybody would follow this guy, considering how bad-ass he looks.
What is upsetting is how hard it is to find this sucker. He hasn't been in stock since I saw him up for preorder what feels like ages ago. I remember seeing him go up for preorder, then taking my eyes off of him for a couple of weeks. I go back to see if he's in stock and he's up and sold out. I haven't been able to find him since and I have yet to find Persona merch at any con I've been to. If you REALLY want him, stick to eBay and cross your fingers you don't get screwed. Otherwise, you're SOL.
Company: Kotobukiya
Release Date: October 2008
Price: Averaged in the $50 range.
