Go For Broke: Macross photo

Welcome back to the article that always remembers love, Go For Broke!

This week I will be discussing a little known series called Macross. This tinny, small show premiered in 1982 with Super Dimensional Force Macross. The show was unique in blending the action of its transforming fighter jets with the drama of love on a battleship and the rise of a little girl into a pop sensation.

The original spawned a hit movie, Super Dimensional Force Macross: Do You Remember Love? Do You Remeber Love, or DYRL as it is known by its fans, is one of the best anime films of all time, featuring character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto. If you haven't seen it, it's worth seeing just for the beauty of the hand-drawn animation throughout the whole movie.

After DYRL, there was another movie, a couple OAVs, two entire series, and a ridiculous amount of singles released for the pop stars in each series. If you love anime in general, you need to watch Macross in some form or another.

Luckily, there are quite a few figures from the Macross universe out there, some of which you'll be seening this week. Follow me after the jump to get a peek!

Macross Collection Part One '09

The first set of figures are the first part of the Macross collection. This set features Hikaru Ichijyo and Lynn Minmay from SDF Macross and DYRL, Ishtar from Macross II, Mylene Jenius from Macross 7, and Mao Nome from Macross Zero. You basically have the main ladies (and dude with the case of Hikaru) of each of the main Macross shows. It's good spectrum of characters for a trading figure set, as you're bound to like at least one of the characters here if you dig Macross.

Company: CM Corporation

Release Date: January 2009

Is it available? You can find the set at several sites. I haven't seen them available separately though, so you'll be stuck getting the whole set if you're interested.

Price: Between $71 and $89 for the set.

Excellent Model Core Macross Frontier Ranka Lee

Up next is Macross Frontier's queen of all things Nyan Nyan, Ranka Lee. Ranka starts the show off as a typical high school girl with ambitious dreams of becoming a singer, yet gets much more than she bargained for. The pose and background for the figure come from the 'nose girl' art that appears on one of the ships later in the show. It has Ranka in a much sexier pose than the character would ever actually do, which is quite amusing to me. The figure also lets you remove her top, exposing Ranka's modest proportions. Don't worry kiddies, her lovelies are covered by stars.

Note that there is another limited version of this statue with the proper hair color of green. The lime-green color is closer to the plane art, and I guess they wanted to squeeze some extra cash out of über fans. Either one looks fine to me. Either way, I can strip Ranka, and awesome enough for me!

Company: Megahouse

Release Date: May 2009

Is it available? She's getting harder to find, so I'd grab her ASAP. Macross F is pretty popular though, so you should be able to find her at cons.

Price: $60-$65. Not much of a spread there.

Macross Collection Minmei Special

This Minmei themed trading figure set is next on our list. Done by the makers of the previously mentioned Macross set, the Minmei Special collection has six different figures of Minmei. Two have her in her performing attire, another two are her in casual wear, one features the Minmei dolls which entranced the Zentradi, and the last one has her posed with Hikaru. This is definitely aimed at the Minmei fan, so if you aren't such a big fan of her, this isn't for you. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of her, but the doll and DYRL outfit look quite nice, and I wouldn't mind having them on my desk.

Company: CM Corporation

Release Date: August 2006

Is it available? You can find them, but it's getting harder and harder. J-Box only has them as individual boxes, so if that's the route to go if you don't want or can't afford the whole set.

Price: $71 for the set and $6 for a single figure.

Available @  Hobby Search  J-Box

Excellent Model Macross Frontier Sheryl Nome

The Galactic Nymph Sheryl Nome graces GFB with her presence. In yet another ero turn, the Macross Frontier pop star's outfit is castoffable. She goes from her already sexy military outfit to the ridiculously sexy booty shorts, tube top and suspenders combo that you can see in the gallery. Clearly, Sheryl has no problem showing off the goods while singing and we all love her for it!

Company: Megahouse

Release Date: August 2009

Is it available? Yep, Sheryl is pretty easy to find.

Price:  $68 to $88

Lynn Minmei CM's Version

Finally, I bring to you Minmei, yet again in her DYRL costume. This time, she's in a larger form, giving you a better view of the whole outfit. This is the Macross figure that I want the most, and that's that I dislike Minmei. The way her personality was changed in DYRL made her way more likable, as well as giving her the performance of a life time with the titular song, Do You Remember Love? It's a beautiful song and she's in a beautiful outfit. This is a must get for anybody with a love of Macross.

Company: CM Corporation

Release Date: November 2008

Is it available? I found her available now at two sites, though a couple of others mentioned another Minmei coming out that looks very similar to this one. I didn't include it because it was from a different company and I wasn't sure if it was exactly like this one. If you're curious, check Kid Nemo's site for this other mystery Minmei coming out.

Price: $45 or $56

Available @  Hobby Search  Kid Nemo

That's it for this week. Have a broke one!

Legacy Comments

There's a whole bunch of the mecca ones too. :3 Also the huge ones of Hikaru in the space outfit from the movie.

these are great, I can't wait to get Sheryl!
::sigh:: Such a big Macross 7 fan. Well, Fire Bomber. Really wish Mylene got the full figure treatment. Course, at the time of its release it probably wouldn't be that great. But, I can dream!
No talk of any of the mechs by Bandai or Yamato :'(.

*Pets his collection* Shhhhh It is okay my children. I still love you.
I literally know nothing about mechs, which is why I don't talk about them or I bring in a guest who does. I don't want to talk out of my ass. All I know is whether or not it looks purty.
Did someone say, mechs? :)
