Get your chess game on with Fate/Zero

It's time to chess d-d-d-d-duel!

While I may never understand how to play chess (or do so well, at any rate), that's never hindered my fascination with ornamental chess pieces. And MegaHouse's latest offering is a double whammy since these blind-boxed chess figurines also happen to be of Fate/Zero characters.

Saber, Irisviel, Rider, Archer (Gilgamesh), Berserker, and Lancer are the six possible figures you could get from an individual box although a box should get you a set. While I'm not sure which characters are supposed to represent which pieces (for instance, is Saber a King, a Queen, or just a Knight?) although they're listed as having white and black variations so the characters themselves could play for either side. Not that there are necessarily sides in a Holy Grail War.

The figurines themselves vary in quality rather greatly. Saber, for instance, strikes me as being unbelievably bland in comparison to the previously seen slew of merchandise available. Irisviel also is a little unflattering. Archer/Gilgamesh is probably the big winner, as he rests on a throne surrounded by a tiny portion of his awesome armory. I'd say he's the biggest must-own from the set and would make a great king. While Rider also looks strong, that seems to be the only pose we ever see the character in. Neither Lancer nor Berserker really set themselves apart. While the detail and paint is still good, the poses are unbelievably bland.

But what think you, dear readers? Do these pieces suit your fancy? And why is it that we never see custom Reversi pieces... oh, right, because they'd have to flip. Anyway, you can expect to see these in March.
