Get out of my nightmares and onto my shelf! James Fuller (Fuller Designs), has crafted a spectacular, Burton-esque diorama for the MAMA Scared Stiff contest on DeviantArt. And, let me just say, I feel very sorry for his competition.
James describes his inspiration for the piece as follows: "I had several things that scared me growing up... so I decided to combine them. One was my fear of the circus and the other which was always constant... the witch in the closet. Which sometimes still pops into my head even at an older age. Although I am not as afraid of the dark as I used to be... the image of her is always there in the back of my head. Those big glowing eyes, with her somewhat deformed long arms reaching out of the closet to snatch me up. She couldn't leave the closet, but she was magic."
Apparently James' trauma paid off, as it provided the basework for a phenomenal diorama (unlike my childhood nightmares about babies with exploding heads and invisible mummies which have yet to yield dividends of any kind...). The level of detail is nothing short of extraordinary and the color really makes everything pop. One of the coolest effects (besides the zombie witch) is the way that the room "shifts" as the fear corrupts it. Just look at the peeled wallpaper and those boards. Then there's the fun little clown portrait with the exposed skull and glowing eyes which, honestly, I find less frightening than the clown. At any rate, there's a lot to like in this diorama and I wish James all the luck he probably won't need.
The MAMA Scared Stiff contest is still going for those who want to try their luck. After all, there's still second place. Given that the the contest ends 11:59 p.m. PST, you really don't have much time left, though.
