DOTA 2 HeroClix, TF2 NextChess sets debut at ToyFair

0

Welp, guess I'm buying a chess set this year

NECA/WizKids are putting that Valve license to good use, it seems; not only have we been getting TF2 figures, but some of WizKids properties are getting the Valve treatment, too. It starts with DOTA 2 characters coming to HeroClix, featuring both a 24-character series and two five-figure sets. More surprising, though is the second announcement: the launch of the NextChess series, with a Team Fortress 2 set being the first one available.

NextChess itself sounds complex: the press release about the new set mentions that customization is possible by "mixing and matching various classes as any chess piece." Furthermore, it wouldn't be a TF2-anything without hats, and the chess set features hats as unique toppers which apparently control things like movement abilities. Capture a piece and take their hat, and you can then use the captured hat's abilities for your own pieces. Interesting ... but I feel like when I'm not playing, these hats are going to be sitting on my figmas and Revoltechs.

Both sets will launch this summer, and we'll be seeing more at Toy Fair, including actual photos. I am not very good at chess, but it appears as though that tiny hat compulsion that TF2 gave me is going to rear it's head again.
