Those ruffles have suffered in the transition from the illustration. Maybe it's too hard/expensive to have them loose and soft on a small scale, working with the drape of the fabric.
Btw, had you seen the historical styled disney princess pictures that have been making the rounds? By shoomlah on deviantart. If these were made into special edition dolls, wouldn't complain. Ariel's wedding dress looks a lot better gibson girl style and Belle gets a huge 18th century gown.
