Crossing into the dark side: My First Doll photo
After almost six years of frothing at the mouth over photos of other people's dolls, watching my co-workers invest their money into them, browsing endlessly over the websites of dollmakers, and looking at my wallet with an expression of concern, I've done it. I've finally done it.

I bought my first ball-jointed doll.

I have to wait about thirty days before he arrives from the Latidoll factory, and he'll be quite basic when he arrives. At least he comes clothed (most BJDs do not) and with a wig and makeup, so I have that on my side. I've included a variety of photos of him in the gallery so you guys can see how much difference a wig and clothing or variant eyes can make with these collectibles.

After making this purchase, I noticed I had very different emotions about it than about buying PVC. I think it may be because of the difference in money spent. If I preorder a figure that costs less than $100, I'm excited for a sec, then I get excited when I get it. With this, the emotion was almost maternal -- and I realized why so many doll owners refer to them as "sons" and "daughters". It seems creepy until you plunk down the money for one, and then you kind of get it. I can only imagine feeling it even stronger when he arrives.

It also got me thinking about you guys. Do you own dolls? If not, would you ever want one? How do you feel collecting dolls differs from collecting PVC, vinyl, or any other type of item we like to buy? For instance, we have discussed how we feel some of the higher priced designer vinyl on the market is overpriced, despite the fact that it is considered "art". But these dolls are equally expensive. Does that make them "art" as well?

Legacy Comments

Gosh Im so jealous at everyone getting bjds! Congratulations! What kind of hair did you pick?
I would certainly like to get a doll at some point. I would like to make one from scratch but the problem with that is there are no shops around here for that and I would not want to do it online unless it was a pre built model.

On the topic of art and price I don't think because they are expensive they are by default art. That's not to say that dolls can't be art as many of them are and just look drop dead gorgeous.

The price I think comes from the fact that in most cases dolls are rather large when compared to PVC figures. They are also MUCH more detailed when it comes to things like the hair and clothing as they have real wigs and the clothing is real cloth which very few PVC figures do. They are made out of fragile material quite often which further adds to the cost.

Dolls have always been a point of interest for me. Mainly because they are whatever the owner makes them. I have seen some that make me think they are the ugliest thing I have ever seen. And I have seen some that have made me want to go out and start making one now. I guess the best analogy is that a doll is like a canvas. Free to be made into a masterpiece or a disaster.
Am I the only person who finds these dolls to be so draculaing creepy?

I've always had trouble accepting these kinds of figures. The emotionless eyes, and pale as death skin really reminds me of corpses. It really freaks me out.
Welcome to the club Colette! I must say Latidoll has some amazing doll molds and I want one my self. I love my two dolls that I have right now, just waiting to get some extra money so I can buy them new clothes and wigs.

You're not alone, having one of these in my room would freak me right the hell out. That said, I can appreciate the incredible detail and quality of these, so goodonya to those who put the massive amount of money into BJDs, they're certainly worth it if it's your kind of thing.
I only have one doll myself (Dollfie Dream Nia). After spending a crazy amount of money to get her I first thought of myself as crazy. Then I had a nasty helping of buyer's remorse. But then I finally got the doll, and all of those "I could've used that money to buy a lot of sandwiches!" feelings just melted away.

I'm not quite on the same page with other doll owners. I don't call her my "daughter" and I haven't bought a million outfits and wigs for her (I got her since I'm crazy about Nia, so it doesn't make sense for me to change her wig or clothes) I'm very happy to have her regardless.
congrats in still looking for my perfect doll
your doll is amazing
Congrats Colette! It really is a different experience opening the box for a doll vs. a figure. When I got my dollfie dream, seeing that box was weird. I also got worried after sending Volks such a huge chunk of money, but when I saw Yukino in person when she arrived I had no regrets. You will now proceed to want to spend more on clothes for your doll than yourself :) Can't wait to see your own photos!

For everyone one finds them creepy - dolls are not for everyone, just like PVC, poseable, or vinyl figures are not for everyone. I'm not a huge fan of the more realistic ones, but it doesn't bother me.

That's the nice thing about this site, there are all different kinds of articles for different collectors!
Congrats on your first BJD. As of right now, i have three Dollfie Dreams, and they are, as many says, very different, and i completely understand what you mean about that feeling of reluctance at first, but you get that sense of having something like a "daughter" or "son," and i think it's entirely worth it. I'm actually interested in getting a Resin BJD but I'm reluctant since they're a bit heavy.
So you have finally done it! I am next!! But seriously, I am still on the browsing/spending hours on manufacturers' websites stage. I agree it must be different than buying PVC. With figures, as much as I love them they are like ornaments to me. I think you get to have more of a relationship with a BJD. Or am I just trying to justify spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds on a doll? :-) Anyway, great choice Colette!
Yay Colette! I can't wait till he comes! You picked a very smexy doll :)

Am I the only person who finds these dolls to be so draculaing creepy?

Lol no, 'they're creepy' ('as well as their owners' is a bonus) is practically an obligatory comment if they get featured anywhere outside specialised doll sites.
Grats grats! The Lati reds are some nice looking sculpts. Ha, compared to all the soom dolls I've been looking at recently his nose looks fantastically huge (I'm not trying to insult I promise, I like the prominent noses).

Buying bjds has always been a longer, more involved process for me than buying PVC figures. Each stage gets drawn out - from the first decision to purchase, a last analysing look at full length photos, checking and double checking quantities and options before add to cart, deep breath as you type a big sum into paypal. Never felt much buyer's remorse with them 'cause one I'd been saving up for months and another was part of an event and had bonus free stuff. I was prepared for the expense. I'd liked the things for years but I only considered getting one when I was out of uni and with a job.

Even with some of the higher priced figures I've felt a quick bite the bullet moment 9find and then the beginning of the waiting. With bjds I'll scrutinise the body sculpt from different angles, search out owner pics to see the sculpt in a variety of face ups and wigs, eye sizes, etc. Think about eye and wig colours. Check the doll's measurements against other dolls for clothing compatibility. And I've bought an artist head before so that sends you off looking for resin matches, then from that pool you think about what body sculpt you want, how you would like the face up to look, so you collect pictures and make notes.

Then there's mild anxiety when you're waiting, whether it'll get posted on schedule and then clear customs without collecting fees (D:).

The customising plays into the difference. If I see a nendo I know what I'll get will be exactly like that picture and all the different looks with the faceplates will be right there too. With bjds you're often making all the choices about how it'll look, so there's all that mental energy and time you're putting into it already. 'So I want a doll like the site's pics but with choppy red hair, purple/brown eyes but in a smaller size, these shoes, that outfit, face up colouring more pink on the cheekbones, another company's body, jointed hands'.
@Ninebeats -- I quite agree. I've just gone through that process for the first time and now I'm in that waiting for the payment to clear part of the process. It's deeply exciting though, one of the first times I have felt this way about collecting in a while!
@Ninebeats I love Soom dolls I can't wait for the day to own both a Soom Lupin and Spinel.
I wouldn't wont a doll but i do wont my hair like that dude, except not blond :D
I have a Lati doll too :) you'll really love him because he's just so beautiful! Great choice in your first boy :3 he's really big and he'll be fun to customize.
Congrats! I built and painted my Dollfie Dream a while ago and was also hit by buyer's remorse, but it also disappeared once I got her in the mail. Can't wait to see pictures!
