One of my favorite styles of toy-making is to take a realistic property and transform it into something more stylized and cartoony. I also frequently forget that I really like these reinterpretations, like Clerks. Remember when the Inaction Figures started coming out? Well, all of that is just leading up to me saying that QMx is releasing the second in their line of Dr. Horrible licensed maquettes, shifting from NPH and focusing on the lovely Miss Penny. Mmm, geeky swoons of nerdiness!
Penny, the Dr. Horrible Animated Maquette #2, is sporting her signature laundry basket and nerdy good looks. Originally based on Felica Day (you don't need a link to her IMDB, you all know who she is and the sort of naughty things you want her to say to you, such as how big your HP is and the sort of buffs she'd like to cast upon you), Penny's animated maquette stands at 5.5 inches and is made of polystone. And is completely unrecognizable from her movie counterpart. Let's be honest now folks and face some harsh truths: Penny/Felica Day is adorable, and the little statue we see here continues that trend, but unless you were told precisely who this figure is supposed to be, you would have no way of knowing because her look is not what I'd call "iconic" in the way Dr. Horrible or Captain Hammer both are.
Okay, pitchforks away fellas, let's calm down and enjoy what we have here, as the work is still extremely charming, and at US$49.95 it's not the most expensive thing I've ever seen (Keiko the Whale was the most expensive thing I've ever seen, by the way). There is a strict limited edition run of Penny with only 1000 pieces being made, so if you want to make sure you have this "Who is that cutie is she the girl from Totally Spies or is she a younger Jean Grey or is she just some girl from next door that you once met" statue, pre-order it while you have the chance. It ships in August, so be prepared.
