The fact that a side by side comparison of the bootleg and the real deal does not appear to exist anywhere on the internet yet is what got me to do this. It's as close to a public service as I'll ever do, folks. Anyway, here's a little feature over on FtB - Butler vs Butler: FIGHT! I honestly hope it's helpful to someone out there. Plus, it's just kind of interesting to compare the two. (I am way too fascinated by bootlegs for my own good.)

(Side note: yes, I'm still working on "that thing". Waiting for the legs to dry completely before I coat the rest of the body in clay. After that dries, then I can start shaping everything. In the meantime, I indulge in staring at pretty things.)

Wow, really informative post. You should be the fake spotter because that was a really great breakdown of differences. Will be checking my box of Belldandy for those signs. Do know what i have hirigana on my base underneath which makes me feel better also.
Nice info there!
Q: The fake sebastian's hair is MATT? I hate to say this but I think I actually prefer the fake's hair if that were the case.
Wow, you managed to get a real one? Lucky!
Anyway, nice job on the comparison, very helpful!
@ steeltendril - Thanks so much! To be perfectly honest I would love to have a bootleg database with comparisons of everything I could manage to find, but... that would require more money than I care to imagine. Something about bootlegs just fascinates me.

@ syncopatedID - Thank you! Yeah, some things were actually quite surprising... but I rather like the real Sebastian's razor-sharp shiny hair. *grin*

@ gamergirlkit - I assure you that it was a lot of luck. First in finding him, then in finding a seller who accepted a payment plan. ...Then in the fact it was close enough to my birthday to convince myself I may as well go for it. Heh. Thanks!
The name of your website makes me happy.

While many may shudder, all of my figures were ripped out of their boxes the moment they got in the door and all but two boxes were THROWN OUT. I have no space to store empty boxes!! Moving them may be a little more time consuming now but they're still move-able with some care and precautions taken. When I purchase a figure the furthest thing from my mind is resale value. What's the point if you're just gonna sell it later?

If a collection gets too large and you don't like some the same way anymore just sell them as is, give someone a great deal on a figure they may really want - not everyone cares about boxes, esp if a figure's been well taken care of.
Thanks for the comparison! I'm looking to get a real Sebastian someday, and this is really helpful. Do you know if Ciel also has the same base as Sebastian? With the red paint underneath?
@ PlasticFantastic - You made my day, thank you! Yeah, it' almost a "ritualistic slaughter" of that which has imprisoned the toys before I got my hands on them. *grin* The only boxes I've ever kept are those Sebastian ones because I know I might need to use them as examples again, and the box for the FF7 10th Anniversary potion, because I'm a FF7 dork and having a shiny Shinra logo amuses me.

ANYWAY. I kind of understand people who worry about resale value, sure... I just shudder at the thought of being on, that's all. Heh. *quietly ducks away from the majority of Tomopop throwing things*

@ SumPi - Thank you! I actually have never seen either a real or bootleg Ciel in person. And come to think of it, I don't know anyone who owns one. How odd. I wonder if they're rarer than Sebastian..? Anyway, so sorry that I can't help. I'd imagine that if this trend holds up, the underside of the real Ciel's base would be the same color as the background of his box. (Blue, it appears.) Again, sadly, I can't be sure of that.
@WIckedOrin Oh don't worry about the others, they do what they do and we do what we do! Besides, the best smell is the fresh PVC when you rip that box open for the first time. ^_^

The boxes I kept were GSC Kyouka 1/8 scale cos she's my fave ever and Alter's Saber Alter Maid 1/6 scale because that box is just way too cool and also SO well packed that it's surprisingly small given the size of the figure/base.
@ PlasticFantastic - Of course, you should never take too deep of a breath. You may not wake up for a while. Though I've never encountered a "deadly PVC smell" that lingers quite like MacFarlane figures do. It's a little concerning.

There, see? We keep boxes. We just happen to have lots of room for other things, too.
