Bandai’s Chibi-arts line has included some of everyone’s favorite characters from Pretty Cure to Kaimen Rider W. Back in July of 2011 the Chibi-arts line added Eiichiro Oda’s popular Shounen Jump series One Piece into its lineup. The first character released in the lineup was the Empress Boa Hancock. It was only natural after Boa for Bandai to release the Captain of the Mugiwara crew the main character from One Piece Monkey・D・Luffy. Now let’s see if Luffy in chibi-arts form is a bust or a must have for a One Piece fan.
The first thing we are going to look at is Luffy’s box. The box is relatively small compared to a nendoroid box but, it does its job perfectly of securing Luffy and his accessories in place. On the top left hand corner you have the official One Piece logo printed. You can catch a glimpse of Luffy from the clear plastic towards the center of the box. Looking down on the lower right corner of the box you see a picture of chibi-arts Luffy in his “Kaizoku Ou” pose. You will also notice the Bandai logo which is underneath Luffy. The last thing you notice is Monkey・D・Luffy's name written in both English and Japanese along with chibi-arts right underneath it. The Toei gold sticker can also be seen on the left hand side. The sticker has a number 19 printed in the top right corner of it. It’s important to take note of the Toei sticker since there have been reported counterfeits of Luffy’s chibi-arts.
The side of the box has three head shots of Luffy with his three different facial expressions you can pose him with.
Finally we have the back of Luffy’s box. Here you can see the different ways in which you can pose Luffy along with his many accessories. One of the cool features of the chibi-arts figures are the character quotes that come with it.
Luffy’s chibi-arts comes with a lot of different accessories. You have 3 different faces, a plump torso, meat, a wooden tankard, 3 sets of arms, a red captain’s coat, and Luffy’s famous Mugiwara hat.
First thing we are going to take a quick look at is Luffy’s set of instructions. Bandai was very thorough with set of instructions. Everything is fully detailed. Luffy’s chibi-arts includes 2 different stands. One stand is made to display him wearing the Captain’s coat while the other is to display him without it. No stone left unturned as the saying goes.
Here are the character quotes I mentioned earlier. Luffy’s chibi-arts includes with three different quote bubbles and 1 question mark bubble. Among the three quotes is Luffy’s most recognized line
「海賊王に俺はなる!」~ I’m gonna to be the Pirate King!
The addition to the character quotes Luffy’s chibi-arts comes with 2 different sizes quote holders, 2 replacement joints, 1 base for the quote holders, and the pole to hold Luffy upright.
Let’s take a look at Luffy’s base. It’s a circular base with Monkey・D・Luffy. written in white. Along with Luffy's name the Straw Hats Pirates(Mugiwara no Ichimi) Jolly Roger is painted on each side.
Finally out of his box we can see a full 360 view of the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates (Mugiwara no Ichimi)Monkey・D・Luffy. Luffy is posed with his arms by his side but it looks like something is missing from the famous pirate whose bounty is

300,000,000(pre-time skip).
Here is Luffy with his trademark Mugiwara hat. Luffy just isn’t the same without his hat. One thing that did leave me a little disappointed was the lack of detail on Luffy’s hat. The hat doesn’t have any detailing like the MegaHouse P.O.P's do to make it look like it is in fact a straw hat.
With his arms raised in the air he can smell his next great adventure. Luffy is always ready for whatever may be in store for him and his crew.
Here we are going to take a closer look at Luffy’s smiling face. Luffy’s smiling expression is one of the 3 faces you can change him into. This is my favorite expression out of the three. There is just something that makes me melt whenever I see Luffy sporting that giant smile of his.
Moving down here we have Luffy’s red vest. You can see that the paint of his gold buttons does run a little into the vest. The camera does capture everything with its lens however; you can’t easy spot this paint blurb with the naked eye.
As we get to Luffy’s feet you can once again see a little bit of the paint from his sandal straps running into his feet. There is also a dark blue paint splotch on the left side of his jeans.
Here is Luffy with both his hands raised in a fist in his “I’m going to kick your ass” pose.
Luffy’s second expression has him pressing his lips together as if his sucking on something sour. It’s the perfect expression to place the “?” quote next to Luffy.
One thing Luffy’s loves to constantly do is eat till he becomes a plump gomu gomu boy. I love the fact that Bandai included a plump torso that you change Luffy into. Of course Luffy wouldn’t be Luffy if he wasn’t eating his meat. The quote just says it all. “Food!!! Meat!!!”
Here is a close up of his wooden tankard. The water looks as it is about to spill over.
Now we take a closer look at the stick of meat that Luffy is holding in his right hand. There is a little brown paint that spills over to into the bone of meat.
This is the face of someone who is very content. He just looks so adorable with his checks full of food and that silly grin.
Last but not least Luffy’s “I’m gonna be the Pirate King!” pose. Here you see Luffy wearing a red captain’s coat over his shoulders with his arms are crossed. This is my favorite pose from Luffy’s chibi-arts set.
Overall, I am very happy with the way that Luffy came out. There are a little bit of paint issues here and there on the figure but it wouldn’t stop me from buying the figure. The most noticeable paint issue is on the buttons on Luffy’s vest. Since I have him posed with his arms cross you can’t really notice the problem. This was my first chibi-arts and I can say he won’t be my last. His retail was 2,940¥. Although he has sold out in most retail stores he is currently available at BBTS for 33.99.
It’s no secret that my favorite show of 2011 is Sunrise’s hit series Tiger & Bunny. Anything that is merchandise related to TaiBani I want to instantly buy. Whether, it is a Figuart, chibi-arts, books, mouse pad you name it I want it. With the immense popularity of the series any merchandise associated with the show instantly sells out as soon as it goes up for pre-order. Luckily, I was able to snag a set of Bandai’s Deformeister Petit which was released back on October 26th. This adorable set comes with all 8 of the heroes from Tiger & Bunny in chibi forms. Now let’s take a look and see if our heroes in chibi forms are a hit or a miss for Bandai.
Let’s take a quick at the box. The outer box has all of the heroes pictured in their deformeister chibi forms each with their unique hero pose. Inside the box you have 10 tiny boxes which each hold one of the 60mm petit figures. Since there are 8 heroes and the set comes with 10 you will have to 2 extras in the set. In my box my extras were Origami Cyclone and Rock Bison. I was hoping to get an extra Wild Tiger and Bunny but unfortunately I wasn’t that lucky.
Wild Tiger
ワイルドタイガー
Our first hero is Wild Tiger the “Crasher for Justice”.
Each petit comes with a base that is about 1.2 inches in diameter. Tiger’s base has his employers name “APOLLON Media” in the center.
「ワイルドに吠えるぜ」 ~ “Let out a wild roar!”
Here is a complete view of our Wild Tiger in his chibi form. Tiger’s pose is reminiscent of one of the early promos for Tiger & Bunny where he was pointing to himself. While you cannot move his hands you do have the ability to move his head if you’d like. The paint job on Wild Tiger was near perfect for such a tiny figure. Even his eyes are painted with a metallic yellow paint as his Figuart was.
Here is a quick peek at Wild Tiger’s 2 sponsors which are painted on his chest and shoulder armor, Soft Bank and SHFiguarts.
Barnaby Brooks Jr.
バーナビー ブルックス Jr。
Next we have Wild Tiger’s partner the super rookie Barnaby who was given the nickname “Bunny” by Kotetsu.
Bunny’s base also has “APOLLON Media” written in the center.
「僕はバニーじゃない!バーナビーです!!」~ “I’m not Bunny! It’s Barnaby!”
Bunny’s front and back view. Bunny is in one of his familiar poses with his right hand pointing up. There is a tiny paint scuff on the left small booster pack on his back.
Bunny has 3 sponsors that are advertised on his hero suit. However, the only sponsor that made it to his chibi form was Bandai.
「さあ...行きまつよ、おじさん。」~ “Come on. Let’s go, Old man.”
「そだな、バニーちゃん。」~ “You got it, Bunny-chan.”
I couldn’t resist. I just had to take a picture of these two together. I am a little sad that I can’t pose them in the “Hime carry” pose but this is still adorable.
Rock Bison
ロックビイソン
Our next hero is Rock Bison the “Bull Tank of the West Coast”.
On Rock Bison’s base we have “Kronos Foods” his sponsor company.
「うし!」~ “Cow!”
Here is a picture of Rock Bison from behind as he sits in the seiza position to eat his food.
Here we can see Rock Bison enjoying his dish of yakuniku. My Rock Bison has a really noticeable paint scuffs on the top of his helmet. There are a couple of other paint boo boo’s on him however, you really won’t notice them once he is on display.
On his should armor you can see the sponsor logo for “Gyu-Kaku” which is a yakiniku restaurant chain.
Blue Rose
ブルーローズ
The “Super Celebrity of the Heroes”, Blue Rose is our next hero.
Blue Rose’s base has “Titan Industry” written in the center.
「私の氷はちょっぴりCOLD、貴方の悪事を完全HOLD!」 ~ “My ice is a little bit cold, but your crime has been put completely on hold!”
She does look adorable as she leans on the Pepsi bottle.
Out of all the deformeisters poor Blue Rose has the most issues. From the front you really don’t notice any visible issues. From behind you can easily spot the blue paint cracking on her bikini bottom. My other issue is with her white rose thorns that are attached to her lower back. If I touch her too much they instantly fall off of her.
Blue Rose’s sponsor is the zero calorie zero Pepsi drink “Pepsi NEX”.
Sky High
スカイハイ
Up next is popular “King of Heroes” who is known for his catchphrase “Thank you! And again, thank you!"
Here we have “POSEIDON” written on Sky High’s base.
「スカーイハーイ!スカーイハイハハーイ」 ~ "SKYYYY HIIIIGH! SKYYYY HI H-HIGH!"
Sky High is posed in his memorable hero pose with his arms up in the air. He looks absolutely adorable in his chibi form. There are only two issues that I had with my Shy High. First one is his antenna; it’s always bending no matter how hard to try to keep it straight. He also has a tiny black paint mark on his helmet.
Onto Shy High’s sponsors Ustream and Tamashii Nations. On written across his chest is Ustream™. Ustream is a website that offers live casting and video streaming services. The Tamashii Nations logo is on both of Sky High’s wrist armor.
Origami Cyclone
折紙サイクロン
My favorite ninja who’s knack for photoboming is top notch.
“Helperidese Finance” is written on Origam’s base.
「ばっちり企業名アピールするでござる。あっ、いや、しますから」 ~ “I’ll try to bring the spotlight onto the company name de gozaru! Ah, I mean, I will.”
Origami is just so cute in his pose. There is so much photobombing that can be done with his chibi. As you can see written on his giant Hira-shuriken on his back is .Anime which is one of Origami’s sponsors. Origami has three other sponsors on his hero suit but they are not visible at all on his deformeister.
Fire Emblem
ファイヤーエンブレム
Fire Emblem is the hero who has the ability to control fire and sees himself more as one of the girls.
Fire Emblem’s base we see “HELIOS ENERGY” written in the center. Helios Energy also happens to be the company which Fire Emblem (Nathan Seymour) owns.
「無事に帰って来たらキスしてあげる」 ~ “Come back safely and I’ll give you a big kiss.”
Here is a quick look at Fire Emblem’s diva like pose as he holds a laptop on his hand.
Fire Emblem’s sponsor happens to be the brand of personal computers by Fujitsu “FMV”.
Dragon Kid
ドラゴンキッド
Dragon Kid is youngest hero who has a Kung Fu fighting style and the ability to produce lighting.
Dragon Kid’s base has “ODYSSEUS Communication” written in the center.
「ごめん、ボクがボーイッシュだから」~ “Sorry, is it because I’m a tomboy?”
From the front Dragon Kid looks so adorable holding her Calbee chips with her sweet smile. A peek from behind you can see her hair styled in a ponytail.
Of course, we are going to take a look at Dragon Kid’s two sponsors which adorn her head piece. On the right side Calbee the popular Japanese maker of snack foods. And on her left we see DMM.com the online DVD & music rental store.
Overall, I am very happy with Bandai’s Deformeister petit set. There are tiny paint imperfections here and there but it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment the chibi heroes give. The set is still available at AmiAmi as well as Hobby Link Japan for anyone who may have missed out on them. Individual characters are also available at mandarake. The prices may vary from character to character. Of course, the popular characters will be a little bit more.
「いつか、虎徹さんに僕のチャーハンを食べてもらおうと思って、練習してるんですからね」 ~ “I’ve been learning how to make fried rice, so you have to try it someday!”
Tiger & Bunny. Over and out!
