Every time a figure comes out with a special edition of a game, you just pray and hope it's 1) your favorite character and 2) doesn't suck. While Mr.Bubbles (aka Big Daddy from Bioshock) was a great choice for fans, the actual figure got a bad reception. I know a few people whose Big Daddy was decapitated in some form and had to request a new one, also the paint job was a little... off. Something about the bright and metallic colours of the official version just didn't seem to fit, but schwerpunktstudios managed to get it perfect. His words:
I wanted the Big Daddy to be bulkier, and so chose to lean it forward. This made it appear a little more hulking. To do this, I sawed off the right foot at the ankle, the left leg at the knee and waist, the drill arm at the shoulder, and the left arm at the shoulder and wrist. The legs were reposed first. Joints taking more weight than others (like the left waist and knee) were double pinned, the others joined with a single pin. To increase the flexion of these joints, and lean the model forward, I used sandwiches of plasticard through which ran the pin(s). These joints were the right ankle, left knee, and left wrist.
After some hard work, an array of beautiful layers in paint and some rethinking of the pose, schwerpunktstudios has produced a beautiful upgrade for the figure that just never quite fit the bill previously. Sadly this was a personal project rather than a service, as I would happily pay for the rework myself. You can check even more pictures and a complete description on the remodelling process at the schewerpunkt blog, but enjoy the gallery below for the finished result. Oh Mr.B, now we can look for angels together again!
