Beast Saga: The Legend Continues (with more pre-orders)Hey kids, do you remember Battle Beasts? Of course you do! ...or don't, depending on how old you were around 1987. At any rate, I previously discussed how Diamond Select was bringing them back in name but now it's time to have a look at how Takara is bringing them back in spirit. Takara's Beast Saga more or less captures the visual aesthetic of the original line (which is to be expected, given that they created the original toys), in addition to incorporating a gameplay gimmick that I imagine is more complex than the original Battle Beast rubsigns. These figures generally look spectacular and really are an excellent homage to the beloved '80s toyline. It appears that the configurations for this line are broken up between single-carded figures and themed starter packs, in addition to things strictly pertaining to gameplay. For more, click the jump.
While many of these figures have been available for pre-order for a while now, Big Bad Toy Store recently added a handful more (you know, because the figures are small) including Gorilla, Rhinoceros, Crocodile, and Turtle. And you know what? Three out of those four are awesome.
(But which three?!) Oh, man, Takara, you are brutal. These figures are all so cool but also a little ridiculous that BBTS is charging US$7.99 for the single-carded figures which are likely around 2-inches tall. So basically I'm really going to have to limit myself to a few of these and then just pray that the line gets a cheaper US release. While I love the animal head detail, I can't help but feel that the bodies seem boxy on some of these. I feel that Gorilla suffers the most from this design within the selection. If I had to just buy one of these four (and I probably will just buy one of these four...) it would be Crocodile. Sure, I like rhinos better, but Crocodile's face just has so much more detail and his scaly little toes are cute. Oh, for accessories it looks like each one comes with a card, a weapon, what appears to be either a shield or stand, and two dice. I'm not sure if they'll all just have swords but I really hope they individualize.
Some of the previously announced stuff is also really cool. In particular, Bird and Bat really remind me little of existing Battle Beast figures. Really liking the look of those two as well as Elephant and Lion. Elephant really seems to have a perfectly suited armor, as it conveys the bulk and power associated with the animal. From what I've seen so far, there are a TON of figures already announced. Many have individual pre-orders while others seem to be available through starter decks or other configurations. No matter what you're into, there's probably an animal warrior for you. So, what's your favorite animal, my Tomopals? What would you like to see in this line?
