Are those trees moving? How Spooky (Town)!Being a Spooky Town fan, I'm depressed by how often this fringe-y line falls under the radar. As you might have seen in the Michael's 2012 Spooky Town pamphlet, the line has many really cool offerings and generally features a sense of humor. "Are Those Trees Moving?" is one such example. At around US$30, ATTM is a smaller, affordable piece that still offers a surprising amount of bang for buck. This piece features both lighting (multiple points) and movement (guess what moves) with both features powered by three AA batteries (although you can instead use a Lemax-made power adapter). The base features grass flocking which makes for a nice quality touch. While presumably chosen to partially hide the trees' machinations, it's also visually appealing especially given the places where it's broken by a boulder or patch of dirt. Of course, the major draw is the pair of trick-or-treaters staring incredulously and pointing at a mean-looking tree as if they were afraid of it moving. The kids feature decent sculpts but rather slipshod paint (a common enough aspect in the line, possibly meant to mirror the normal "Christmas town" practice). The trees are quite another story as they feature some extensive paintwork including green highlights for moss. The two trees seem to have internal lighting, but, more importantly, also move (as seen in this video). Their slow, menacing crawl is a great touch since the movement is barely perceptible at times. The remaining decor features two boring, normal trees in the background as well as a pair of (open?) graves. Each of the tombstones has a sinister, albeit lighthearted, engraving. These little touches always help to Lemax's Spooky Town stuff a little flavor. "Are Those Trees Moving?" is a great collection piece as as well as an excellent gift for the dendrophobiac (or dendrophiliac; we don't judge here) in your life. [Order at eHobbyTools] Did you know?
