Hey everybody, we're back with another episode of the Tomocast! For this episode, I'm joined by Andres Cerrato and Rio McCarthy to talk about our Toy Fair 2014 coverage. We discuss some of the better things to come out of the...

Thanks to a preview on Good Smile Company's New Recruits blog we're getting our first complete look at the new desk and chair set designed specifically for Nendoroids! They're squat little things and a perfect match for your favorite Nendo school girls. They seem to be designating these as Nendoroid More set 03 which will be sold after the wing set (01) and the ear set (02), but not price or date has been given.
They don't really fit figma at all, but there's a chance Max Factory might make some themselves as part of the newly announced figmaPLUS series of accessories announced in October. A preview of a street diorama can be found in the gallery.
In episode four of the anime short series Miss Monochrome -The Animation- the rather obvious statement that "Nendoroids are proof of popularity" is made. This leads our android idol singer title character on a mission to get a Nendoroid figure made of herself. It's no coincidence that shortly after this episode aired that Starchild announced that Miss Monochrome will in fact be getting her very own Nendoroid from Good Smile Company!
Details will be coming in the future from GSC, but if it's anything like the one that appears in the anime we can speculate on what she'll be coming with. The anime version appears to come with her friend Ru-chan (a Roomba vac), a dove (probably a joke on the Vocaloid objects), a bowl of food, and pair of AA batteries along with whatever is hidden behind the photo. Be even more amazing if they actually follow the joke and number her 4696.
But the real question is will we see a Monochromedayo Nendoroid?
While the figma version of new Madoka Magika The Movie -Rebelion- magical girl Nagisa Momoe is still in the early prototype stages, the Nendoroid version is looking much further along. Good Smile Company's Kahotan has posted on Twitter a picture of a fully painted version of Nagisa in her magical girl outfit. The movie just came out in Japanese theaters and spoilers are popping up everywhere so be prepared to have her secrets revealed as we learn more about the figures.
No other info to go by, but I'm sure she'll be seeing pre-orders fairly soon.
Hot Toys is very well known for making some truly astounding 1/6 scale figures, but they might have outdone themselves this time. Their new Captain Harlock figure based on the visuals from the 2013 Space Pirate Captain Harloc...
Trying to collect figures on a shoestring budget? It's hard to do unless you're willing to set your sights a little smaller. But that doesn't mean you have to settle for something cheap. Bluefin Distribution and Tamashii Nations are bringing over a bunch of the latest gashapon, prize figures, scale figures, blind boxes and other small-scale collectibles along with an ample number of role play items from a wide range of anime.
When it comes to the Dragon Ball stuff it's hard to tell what's more popular; the figures or the role play stuff. Aside from their S.H. Figuarts and Figuarts ZERO offerings they also displayed their new line of of Shodo articulated mini figures. They're 80mm tall (just over 3 inches) fully articulated, painted like their big brothers, and features a Goku based on his appearance in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. They also had prototypes of some new prize figures on display that will certainly see released soon.
Fun as those are it's hard to not be impressed by the number of role play items on display. Goku's pole and disk-firing wristbands look good, plus there's Trunk's sword, the Dragon Radar, and glowing Dragon Balls. But the best choice is the variety of Scouters in red, blue, and green. They even have an exclusive three-pack with NYCC stickers on the sides. They can scan cards to read out power levels and make a bunch of noises. I remember seeing a lot of people walking around Otakon with these on this year so they're definitely popular even among non-cosplayers.
If Dragon Ball isn't your thing then maybe you're interested in the huge variety of figures being released for One Piece? Portraits of Pirates? Check! Movie Z figures? Check! Costume figures? Check! Super deformed, mini, and trading figures? Check, check, and check! Looks like most of the cast of characters are well represented, even some of the lesser villains look to have multiple figures.
Perhaps you're more of an Evangelion movie fan? There was no shortage of figures for the third movie; ranging from a number of figures for the pilots (including two figures of Shinji, imagine that!) to the Evangelion Mechanics line featuring little Eva Units in complex display sets.
Probably the franchise taking up the most space is Gundam. There was so much Gundam stuff that wasn't Gunpla it would take far too long to try to name it all. There's Gundam STANDart, Gundam Converge, Assault Kingdom, and so very much more. Just go look at the gallery, it's all there.
Too a lesser extent they also had a number of different Saint Seiya figures on display for various characters in different forms. They also had the highly detailed figures from Monster Hunter Encyclopedia XI and XII on display.
This is a great effort from Bluefin. It's nice to see so much stuff from Bandai made available outside of Japan without the need for customers to import.
Back in 1997 Gust Corporation introduced the world to the Atelier video game series. 16 years and 15 games (plus a few spin-offs) later the series has become a staple among JRPG fans. And yet, the series has been pretty light when it comes to merchandise and even lighter where figures are involved. At least we have Phat! still slowly churning out figures based on the 2011 game Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland.
They're latest release is a 1/8 scale figure of Princess Merurulince Rede Arls, otherwise known as Meruru. It looked great in official photos provided by Phat! and Mikatan, but just how close did the final figure turn out to the source? We're about to find out after the jump!
When we first and last saw Union Creative's Calne Ca figure her horrifying visage was on display at Wonder Festival 2013 Summer back in July. I know I said it before, but it's worth repeating that this isn't Miku Hatsune, but...
Hey, look who's being released after a short delay just in time for the latest round of US government turmoil! Genius demon economist and star of the anime series Maouyu, Demon King is nearly ready for her big release in one ...
2014 is going to be a busy year for the Kantai Collection social card game. After a knockout 2013 the game about war ships anthropomorphized into moe characters is already hitting the new year running with plans for a new anime series, new PS Vita game, and, of course, a new Nendoroid of popular character Shimakaze based on the Japanese destroyer of the same name.
Kahotan has updated the official Good Smile Company blog with a full preview of all of Shimakaze's many, many features. She's got some interesting things going on like the multiple rabbit-like Rensouhou Chans, the tiny innertube one of them is sitting in, the tiny Nendo display arm keeping one of them aloft, and the torpedo tubes on her back. Plus she's got a ton of effect parts. And that's only half of it! She also comes with enough battle damaged parts that you're practically getting a second figure! Not just her, but the Rensouhou Chans also appear to come with battle damaged parts and their own swapable expressions. Pretty revealing for a Nendo; I don't think even the Queen's Blade figures got this kind of treatment.
They stopped short of giving the price and release date, but considering everything you get she probably won't be cheap. We do no that she's going up for pre-order this Tuesday so there's that to look forward to. She's a standout figure that will most certainly be joined by some friends before too long. In the meantime maybe she can just shoot down some Strike Witches or something.
