Promoted Post: A C-blog review of Nathan Ota's Midnight Crooner

Dec 16 // Kristina Pino
Figure: Midnight CroonerArtist: Nathan OtaProduced by: Double Super Retail info: US$124.99; buy it at STRANGEco   8th elephant   As you can see, the painting is reproduced in it's full green-glory on the face of the box,the rear has a brief description of Nathan Ota, and sketches adorn the sides.Ok, so let's get to the unboxing....The Crooner, Bird+Light+Cloud Base & Cigarette are securely encapsulated in two vacuum formed plastic shell halves. But wait, don't pull those apart yet!!! There's a twist-tie going through both halves to secure the Cig from floating around; which needs to be removed first or you'll tear the plastic shells.See the two holes above & below the Cigarette? That's where the twist-tie was.Notice that the Bird+Light are attached to the base via wire. The underside of the base reveals the on/off switch for the LED Lamp along with the battery cover and Nathan Ota's signature plus Three Zero's logo.Midnight Crooner assembled (LED Off)I was pleasantly surprised to find that the head and arms do swivel while the waist is only limited by it's elliptical form. One strange thing about this character, is that the eyes aren't painted. Maybe it's just my unit, but I do remember them being white in the preview photos. Some metallic fleck might be a cool alternative too. It's not clear whether the conical forms are traffic cones, dunce hats, or unicorn horns;but all's good as long as they don't impale me someday ;) The top view show's just how awesomely 3-Dimensional this figure is. With small pointy parts protruding out everywhere; it's definitely a toy for us bigger kids only.As the box states "NOT A TOY. NOT A CHILDREN'S PRODUCT"On to the Details:The larger of the two birds is nicely detailed with a very content expression. However, bird & light housing are molded as one piece; forcing beak & eyes to always be starring right into the lamp. Crooner's hand also has a loose grip on the lamp, causing it to fall if the arm is rotated too low.The Cigarette has detailed red embers and is very snugly placed between the fingers. The smaller bird appears to be bowing down peacefully and is permanently perched/glued on Crooner's tail which does not swivel either.Let there be darkness....well just a little. In daylight, the amber LED isn't quite powerful enough to do much more than cast a little glare; but at night with some ambient light, a soft glow subtly replicates the original painting and the metallic paisley print on the jacket gives off a nice reflection too.Guess I could've put the box illustration behind to try and get the full effect...I know it's asking a lot, but I would have preferred the ruffles be hand stitched or made out of a textile which more closely represents Nathan's original illustration rather than using lace trim.Conclusion:US$124.99 price tag and a few minor flaws aside, this combination of packaging, vinyl, paint, textiles and illumination makes for the kind of killer figurine all of us should aspire to collect/make.I've been so busy saving up to for the release of my own line of toys, that I usually wouldn't spend this much on a single figure. No regrets here though as it's the perfect addition to the collection :)

Promoted Review: Super movable Saber has a potty mouth

Nov 25 // Kristina Pino
Item: Saber Super Movable NendoroidManufacturer: Good Smile CompanyRetail: Listed ¥3,810. Buy it at: HLJ - AmiAmi - Hobby Search Shadow Mask PrimeWell I've been waiting for her for ages it seems now, but she has finally arrived at my flat.Super Movable Saber has arrived, and she's a very cute little Nendoroid indeed. And here she is!Of course the first thing she's going to do is go talk to the toy she will connect with best, Black Rock Shooter Nendoroid.... Or one of the Revoltech Sabers, or Figma Sabers, but I didn't think of those until now... Besides Black Rock Shooter is out in the open."Hey missy! I'm new here, Super Movable Saber, of Awesome! I need to find Shadow Mask Prime so he can take photos for that photo contest to win me some cool accessories! Any idea where he is?""You do realise the Deadline for that contest was over a week ago?""Eh?""Yeah, you got caught by customs, who ended up charging the master even more just to deliver you! Also they take an extra week just to work out how much their going to charge their poor victim.""ummm...""You took so long to arrive, almost everything else Master had ordered arrived before you did! You're lucky that the eBay order he made hasn't arrived yet, else you wouldn't have been the Second Nendoroid. Heck, you're lucky you arrived before the BlazBlue sequel came out! You're also fortunate that you're special, so he's delaying those other reviews to do you First!""Well, I-""And the worst thing is the bitter irony you actually arrived in the UK early enough that if you hadn't been caught in customs, you would arrived in enough time before the deadline for that contest to try and get those awesome accessories... And I saw photos of the accessories, they looked Super Special Awesome! They looked like they Rocked Hard! But I suppose we shall never know first hand now."Using the Power Of Nendoroids, Saber changes her eye colour to match BRS's, and assumes her emotionless expression as she fully processes this information to come up with an appropriate response to this situation......"~*@$*£#!!!!"Or in this case, an inappropriate response.. oh dear......now just where is she going? Maybe I can find her again on one of my other secret feeds...... Let's start with the Layton Feed...Hhmmm nothing unusual here, just Professor Layton enjoying some tea... I believe he had been having some trouble finding his cup recently. He's found it now by the looks of it... I also see he's found his top hat again, good for him."~*@$*£#!!!!""Oh My! What rude language!"Yikes! And now she's gone again! She was there, caused an uproar and left, so fast that the Layton's top Hat has yet to fall, like in some children's cartoon!"Oh, I need this for later, so... Yoink!"Oh my, the carnage! The uproar! The aftermath! I do think she's left this feed for good though now, so let's try another one... Hhhmmm the Waiting Room maybe? ...aaannnnddd AH HA!There she is, with Woody, who is awaiting his review."Hey there miss, I was going to ask if you've seen a Floating Skull running around with a Cowboy hat, but you look pretty upset, so I think I'll ask if I can help you at all first...""GASP! A Gay Cowboy!""Now see here, lil' miss, I am most certainly not gay...""~*@$*£#! A Pedophile! That's Even Worse!"Woody can only stare in horror at this girl who keeps spewing forth such vulgar language! And with that, she's off again! This is getting us nowhere, maybe I should search on foot, I'll just step out of my bunker...... to find, Ulp, the Full Metal Panic Fumoffu Robot Tamashii Bonta-kun making some very compelling arguments for me doing a proper review of him some time. He's a great figure, so I really should do so some time. I have been meaning to for a long time now, but well umm...."~*@$*£#!!!!"AH! There She is! And her potty mouth is giving me a diversion to escape during! Poor Sousuke thinks she's a drill instruct!Time I wasn't Here! Later Bonta-kun! And watch the language! However, in my hasty retreat I've also lost Saber again! Damn and Blast! Now where can she be? Hhmmm? Oh!Black Rock Shooter, have you seen Saber again- oh, you're depressed? Oh you think because of all the trouble Saber is causing, I won't be buying any more Nendoroids, and you really want me to buy your friend, Dead Master?Well don't worry too much. While I current haven't made an order for her, I am still addicted to my latest addiction my dear girl. So you have nothing to worry about...Apart from-OH!"~*@$*£#!!!!"-Falling! Oh dear, I did tell you about sitting on your cannon like that last time, didn't I?"~*@$*£#!!!!"Now now, that's no excuse for bad language! And Saber, please come back here, we have a review to do!I was also making that face and using the strong language when BRS's neck broke during one of the photo shoots. I didn't realise they were so weak. Of course, each head has a neck joint, so I did have a spare two, the biggest problem was getting the broken joint out... But remember, be careful! Ah Saber!There... calmed down now have we? Feeling a bit better after a rampage? Well as the photos probably showed, Super Movable Saber is Super Poseable. She has articulation in her shoulders, hips, elbows, knees ankles, and, of course, her neck. She comes with a base that will hold her suspended in the air for even more poses. It looks kinda like a Di:Stage, but it isn't. Caption holders are too thin to fit smugly into either of the two sizes of holes. In fact, I have no idea what the bigger holes are used for currently... Her armour's skirt also has a bit of articulation, ball joints I think even, to allow her legs to move more freely. The Skirt is split into different parts, front, back, and two sides, each connected to the main body with their own joint each. Front and back are entirely solid pieces; the sides have solid outer armour, but flexible skirt underneath, which is rather cool. Her bangs (hair) are also soft, so you can also kinda pose those, with a little blutac to help it stay in place. She comes with three swords and two scabbards, since one of the swords is a different version of one of the first two. I.... I still need to get round to finishing watching Fate/Stay Night, so I have no idea what each sword is called, or what's special about them (apart from one has a cool powered up or something version)...One is a wider sword and I will look at this first. It was this blade you saw Saber holding earlier.Like with Figmas, the sword actually fit inside their scabbards. And Saber's Super Movable design is well suited to poses showing her pull the swords out, in fact I think one of her six hands(three for each hand) is intended for this purpose. One of her hands for her other hand is intended to hold the scabbards, and has a peg that fits into a hole on either scabbard. The detail on the swords and scabbards is wonderful, and as you can see, the sword even has some runes down the middle."by The Power Of Greyskull!"This sword also has a translucent version, with surrounding energy waves, or something, that looks pretty damn cool. Obviously, this version does not fit in a scabbard. Why would you ever want to disguise this beauty though? The other sword is a thinner blade, with plentiful detail on the scabbard.Just as with the other blade, it fits into the scabbard, rather than the scabbard being moulded with a sword in it.Now while the other sword is stupidly lose in its scabbard (at the start of the whole photo shoot, I took the first photo, and had to redo it when I realised the sword had slipped out of the scabbard. It took me a while to actually find the bloody thing), this blade fits much more snugly in its scabbard.Ummm.... I didn't think it was that hard to pull out, Saber..."~*@$*£#!!!!""Hey again, lil' missy, I found my hat again! Oh, you seem to be having trouble there? Would you like me to get the sword out?"Umm Woody, go back to the Waiting Room and await your own review please.""~*@$*£#!!! GET AWAY FROM ME!!"Woah! Well at least the sword is out now.As you can see, this Nendoroid is Super Movable, or rather, poseable. However, she's no Revoltech or Figma, that's for sure. Her elbow and knee joints are just normal hinge joints rather than ball joints, or joints that Figmas and Revoltechs have. Also, almost none of her joints are held very fast. One arm is Always coming out of the shoulder joint's hole; in fact, during the photos of the second sword her arm isn't even in her shoulder at all for most part. One leg also seemed to love to pull off the knee continually, and the other knee, when you look at it, is always pulling slightly off the joint, just not entirely. They don't really ruin the figure, in fact they probably stop the figure being ruined since if they were more secure, then breakage would be more likely (strange fact, many toys are designed to break apart like this these days [specially transformers], so that they can have the bits easily popped back together, rather than breaking permanently and causing all involved to cry). It does make it frustrating to pose at times. Yes, it can assume millions of poses, but often you can nearly go crazy trying to get it to pose correctly without falling apart. But when she is posed awesomely, she feels worth it. And be truthful now, half the reason you want her is for her expression, which can be used by other Nendoroids too (as demonstrated by BRS).But we all know what the make-or-break feature of this toy will be... DoesShePass TheHat Test?""~*@$*£# YEAH!!!!"Oh, again with the language! But yes, she does pass the hat test rather well. It is a little small for her, but still kinda suits her. Also, as it fits onto that bit of hair sticking up, there isn't even any need for Blutac most of the time. That bit of hair also swivels round by the looks of it, I've just realised. Either that, or I've just broken her...If you're wondering what is that I'm using to make the hats "float" in the air, and used to make Woody stand more easily, then they shall be revealed in my next review, that will be coming shortly...Now for one more final adventure with Saber to end this review off with.I asked her to go check up on a colony on another planet...How's it going, Saber? Everything fine? So I was worrying for nothing?"Gasp!"Uh oh, this can't be good. Wait. How did you only notice it when you got this close?"~*@$*£#!!!!"Once again Saber responds to the situation in a way I'm beginning to wonder is the only way she knows how..."Why would you even use such language around a baby!""~*@$*£# You!!!! Your Baby's ~*@$*£#-ing Ugly!""You Did it again! And he's not my baby, he's my baby brother!""Shut The ~*@$*£# UP!"Oh dear, will she ever learn to stop using such language?Images from my Flickr Account. Go there for larger size versions...

Promoted Review: Royal Mail - StealthDelivery- Revoltech Alien

Nov 11 // Kristina Pino
Figure name: Tokusatsu Revoltech Alien WarriorFigure Maker: KaiyodoRetail Price: ¥2,714 HLJ AmiAmi Hobby Search Shadow Mask Prime   Enjoying a Nice Cup of Joe, or whatever you call it... Never understood calling a drink by a human name. And if you were going to call it by a human name, there are plenty of better ones, like Cathy. Wait a sec, what's this? "Son of a Bit-" Ulp, that's going to leave a mark. Well here we are, what the Postie Stealth delivered to me today. And I mean Stealth Delivered. I do not hear any knocking (I usually hear when someone knocks on my door when I'm in bed). There was nothing put through my door to say it was delivered; and it was Registered SAL, so I believe that needs a signature. I just opened my door to check, and well, it is a good thing I'm not a toy, else I might have been stealth killed like the Classic Revoltech alien above... As there it was, tucked behind the door that leads to me and my neighbour, again. But seriously, Mister Postman, are you forging my signature? Are you even knocking at all? What the hell? I think I will go to the Post Office to inquire further some time, because who knows what else they will forge my signature for... but enough about that. This is a review of the Revoltech Alien Warrior... This is not just a simple case of a new head - It does feel like this one is a fair improvement in many ways over the Classic Alien. While it has to be said that when it comes to being creepy, the Classic is, well Classic. The colours, the look, and the rather human feel of it... they are very unsettling. However the new Revoltech Warrior is a lot more fierce-looking. More beast-like. The difference is like between finding a decomposing dead body and finding a wolf. One will really unsettle you and make you feel uneasy, while the other, you know that it is dangerous, and it will try to Kill you, so that is what drives your fear of it. I don't know why, but it feels it can better assume some more animal like poses than the Classic. I don't know if it actually is any better at posing than the Classic, but I do believe that while it may be possible for both monsters to crouch, only the new Warrior can make it look good. And I do mean good, I mean, look at this creature. It is crouching ready to strike and rip your liver out. This is mostly due to the least cosmetic change to the figure. It has new arms (two sets, with blades out, and with blades folded into the arm... I think?), new hands (two sets again, both claws ready to rip out your lungs and use them to breathe), new feet, and, most obvious, a new head. However, that thing sticking out of the back of the neck has been changed too. It now folds down for better head movement. Or if you're like me, then you can just pull that damned thing out entirely for TOTAL HEAD TILTBACKABILITY! Ah, that's better... The neck also seems to be different, as though it has also been redone for better head movement. All in all, this one feels a lot more like the one I worked with when I worked on the recent Aliens Vs Predator game. However it isn't just this new head tilting feature that makes it so more like the current image of the Aliens we now have. I think a combination of the new hands, new arms, new legs, and the new colours all help to give it a whole new image. Also, the Classic pose just doesn't suit it. Only more dynamic poses seem to be fitting for him. By the way, I would just like to point out.... I have no idea which of his folded in blade arms is left or right. But I do know which of the blade out arms is which. The "front" of the blade overlaps the top of the wrists, so other than the folded blade arms, I have no other left and right confusion; which is another improvement over the Classic. No two left hands (right hands?) or anything else like what was reported with the Classic, or maybe I'm just lucky this time? Also, I'm sure the other arms are meant to be the blades folded around the arms, as they are not just plain versions of the arms, something is on them, partially covering them. So to go over the new stuff again: New head, new neck, new hands, new arms, new feet, new back collar thing, new base (with awesome and gruesome looking closed egg, and acid hole) new name tag and a new paint job. However, this isn't just the simple new paint job it seems. The most obvious difference is the fact that, rather than being black and silver/grey/brown, he's black and blue. What isn't simple is the translucency. While the Classic was also translucent, the effect seems more... pronounced in the Warrior version... And even the Glorious Egg has a little, look: I love this figure so much, that it is hard to find any fault with it.... ...However... There are a couple issues, including something they haven't really fixed from the last version... .... That tongue is still not much to write home about. It has to be said, the jaw has been improved a bit, so it is no longer prone to hanging open like with the Classic...  "Stop, or I'll shot with my invisible gun!" However with the mouth fully open, you can always see the tongue waiting there... A slight step back there I feel. "Oh cra-" Especially since that, compared to how awesome the rest of the figure looks, the tongue looks kinda meh. Also it is harder to reach the lever to pull the tongue out now... Eh, I really wish they would have improved how it looks a little more... Oh well.... The other problem is particular to me, probably, and actually has no effect on the figure at all. It is just... worrying. It is not even visible until I remove the hand from the effected wrist, as so... "Eh!?!?" Your eyes do not lie, that end is slanted because it is ever so slightly broken! I do not know where the end is, I assume it is still in the hand! "WTF!?!?!?!??!?" But as I said, no effect at all. Especially since each hand comes with its own revoltech joint. It does worry me though, and makes me try to be extra careful with him. And oh, one other "bad" thing.... he makes me want to Army build with him. I mean, I need... ... How many colonists were there again? Well that many Alien Warriors, and also loads of the eggs... The Queen Commands it.... yesss.... I hear it... ...The Call Of The Matriarch... But I can't afford to army build him, especially since I need to import him from Japan... If anyone does manage to army build him a bit, please show me an image of it... as it will be so awesome...  And now that last important picture chaps... THE HAT TEST! Pass with the use of Blutac! And a thank you very much, you've been a great audience! Also, all images hosted on my Flickr account, here!

Community Review: Kafuka Fuura & Chiri Kitsu from Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei

May 04 // Scott Kremer
First of all, the box. I'm not even going to show any pictures because it was not only ugly, but before it arrived at my doorstep. Apparently they didn't think highly of it either. I emailed AmiAmi about this, and after some back-and-forth they agreed to give me free shipping on my next order. Since the box was boring to begin with, I'll consider that fair enough. One thing that concerned me when ordering the figures was that there was a limited edition available only through proxy that featured bolder, darker colors rather than the pastel present on this release. I wasn't sure which one I wanted, but that would have definitely cost a premium. Well, enough talk, let's see how this looks. No teasers, straight to the good stuff: There's everything laid out--the two figures (Chiri Kitsu on the left, Kafuka Fuura on the right), a lantern, a bench, and some bamboo with good luck charms tied to it. More on that later. First, let's take a look at the two figures.Chiri turned out beautiful. Those eyes are gorgeous, and if I were to zoom in, you'd see a reflection on the one to the right. In addition to her pensive gaze, her other features--tiny nose, pursed lips, and relaxed stance--give a sense of serenity. Not to mention that her yukata is gorgeous. You can see the seam in her hair, but it's not very noticeable. While there are seams in her yukata, let's just assume that that's where they sewed it together. Now let's take a look at Kafuaka:She's looking a little more playful! Arms outstretched, showing off her yukata, with eyes and mouth wide open and a red ribbon in her hair, she's ready to...well, do whatever it is that she does. I'm assuming there's some sort of a festival going on for them to be decked out like this. Her yukata is pretty too, but I think I prefer Chiri's. Still, each of them complements each other well. Again, similar seams on hair and yukata, but no big deal. Here's a close-up of them together, so you can compare. Who's your favorite? One nice thing is that they didn't blow all their creative juices on the front (okay, that reads wrong, but I'm leaving it, dammit). The detail continues to the side... ...and both of the bows on the yukatas look wonderful. Chiri's is partially obscured by her hair, but it's well done, trust me. Take a look: Another thing that impressed me was the design of the feet, in particular how they connected to the geta sandals. As you can see, they each give the impression that they're leaning, or perhaps walking forward. This doesn't impede their ability to stand on their own, which is a Very Good Thing. Why? Because the bases they came with are horrible. I'm not even going to justify them with their own pictures, but they're tiny, white, two-inch pieces of crappy plastic with little nubs sticking out of them to connect to the feet. This is as plain as it gets. Since I prefer figures that stand on their own, I'm glad that they put the money into the girls rather than unnecessary bases. If you've been following these figures, you're probably aware that one of the big draws is all the accessories they come with. I'm happy to say that they live up to the standards of the girls themselves. First off, I would be remiss not to feature the series' protagonist, Nozomu Itoshiki, albeit in chibi doll form. Here we see him hanging from some bamboo with those good luck charms attached:The only gripe I have is that it's hard to get him facing the right direction. Still nothing compared to some of the accessories I've had to jam into certain figures' hands, so it barely warrants mentioning. The "doll" itself is fairly well detailed, with a few tiny blemishes, but nothing you're going to notice unless you're more or less taking a microscope to it. I'm just being picky now. Something I loved were all the papers attached to the tree. I have no idea what any of them say (I'll probably enlist the wife for translation duty if I get curious enough), but they're all filled with tiny, perfect script. The bamboo itself is a bit plasticky with no paint or shading, but it doesn't really need a better treatment than that, since it looks just fine in the context of the rest of the set. The bench is similar, but gets a bit of a paint job that helps even things out. Another solid job. And last but not least, I want to highlight the detail that was put into the lantern. In addition to the designs on the side, you can find a light bulb (sadly, not functional) nested within. Who's really going to look that close? But I give them a ton of credit for the detail. All in all, I really don't have any complaints about the set. The pastels look great, and I think I prefer them to the pictures I saw of the darker versions, but both look awesome. I got it for a very reasonable price from AmiAmi, 6,940 yen. For those into the series, or for those that just like cute girls in yukatas (I have a soft spot for those...), I recommend picking this up. Looking forward to more great things from Pear-Dot!

Review: Valkyria Chronicles' Selvaria Bles

Feb 04 // Drew327
(There will be a link at the bottom to a photobucket album of much higher res shots for those interested.)Packaging: Fun insert art!(Her chest just keeps getting bigger and bigger the more places she appears. You could set your drinks on there!) Out of the box: Accessories: Looks pretty sharp! Creepy disembodied hand!!! Up on her own two feet now: More base action: More angles: Where is my big stick!? And some close-ups of the detailing: Wrists/hands don't look too great. Fortunately they are covered up by her gear: Bit of a snafu in the gold paint in there... I'm pretty happy with the hair; I hate when the dividing line between front and back hair pieces is so obvious. However, if you look really closely, the front and back half of Selvaria's hair, they almost look a shade different in color. Close inspection of the eyes shows maybe a few paint job errors? Either that or she put on her eyeliner in the dark. : ) However, I could only see this when looking through a zoom lens and I can't see any issue with the naked eye. Really looking forward to doing some artistic stuff with backgrounds and lighting. She has a great evil stare. Height comparison on the shelf: This was the first figure I ever pre-ordered (back in October). Doesn't appear to be perfect, but overall, I am really happy with it; Valkyria Chronicles is one of my favorite games in recent memory and I am hopeful for more great PVC items like this one. I have seen an Alter unpainted Selvaria, presumably on the horizon, so I was wondering if I should wait, but I caved and am glad (for the moment at least) that I got this one. High res images, and maybe a couple that were not here, are on display at my photobucket album. If you have any questions not addressed by the pictures, feel free to let me know! Also, sorry for the lack of panty shots- I'm a married man so, just not my deal!
