Toy Fair 2015: Diamond Select Toys brings the best display ever

Feb 21 // Scarecroodle
The biggest news might be the 6-inch scale Ghostbusters figures which look a LOT better than the ones Mattel gave us a few years ago. Besides the superior sculpting, paint, and likenesses (although Ray's forehead still looks a little large, even compared to Dan Aykroyd's massive noggin), the figures will also include better accessories: each one seems to come with a proton stream and at least one of them includes the ecto-goggles & a full ghost trap. Now I wish I had waited 4 or 5 years instead of picking up Mattel's versions... DST also had a pretty full display for Tim Burton's holiday classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas. The selection apparently included articulate figures (possibly for the Select line?), oversized dolls, and a healthy amount of Minimates. Given the film's large cast, there's certainly a lot of room for these lines to grow. Personally, I need that Oogie ASAP. I was also excited to see a Marvel Select Doctor Strange. Yes, most companies with the Marvel license have done at least one good Doctor Strange (Toy Biz with its ML version, Hasbro with MU), but it's still really awesome to see a new one especially since the MS version will likely have alternate hands and some neat accessories. He stood alongside the recently announced MS Ant-Man and zombie Sabretooth, as well as the previously shown (and currently available?) Cable and Carnage. All of that was really exciting, but then I saw all of the Batman: The Animated Series stuff and... like... whoa. There were a lot of busts on display including Batman (one suspiciously looks like a Dark Knight Returns version?), Catwoman, Poison Ivy (who looks great), and the Phantasm. For those who enjoy more affordable busts, Joker and Harley Quinn each had a vinyl bank bust on a lower shelf. Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Ivy, and Batgirl will apparently also be getting full statues. I'm excited to see what else DST may do with the license. If that wasn't exciting enough, DST will also be producing Justice League Unlimited collectibles. This apparently includes a great-looking Supergirl and Wonder Woman. The selection also includes what look like lunchboxes as well as bottle openers. DST has apparently also expanded its My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic line of vinyl banks. I had somewhat lost track of these offerings but, as always, the poses look cute and they have neat stands. Hopefully the faces will be a bit nicer on the new ones. Oh, plus there were some Spongebob Squarepants Minimates on display. I can't remember if we'd seen all of these before. Finally, I just learned that the Cthulhu vinyl bank will be coming in an additional color (ie, more to buy). Plus there's some female character next to them that I don't recognize, although the design looks neat. Other items on display (and in the photo gallery) included: Black & white 6-inch Select Clerks figures (including Randall and Dante!) Some new TMNT stuff, including a neat Shredder buff and some vintage comic-style Turtles Minimates More Tarentino Minimates, including Beatrix in her coffin from Kill Bill vol. 2 Star Trek collectibles, including some items for Worf Godzilla collectibles, including a figure for Rodan A Predator bust of some sort Dragon Age Minimates Be sure to check out everything in the gallery. (In other news, I think I spent too much time putting this together.)

Toy Fair 2015: Funko

Feb 21 // Scarecroodle
While Funko had a LOT of awesome collectibles on my display, my biggest want belongs to the upcoming Gremlins ReAction figures. Unfortunately, the gremlins (and mogwais) will be packed separately, but they'll be coming with some larger accessories. The line-up includes Billy, Kate, Gizmo, Stripe (mogwai), Stripe (gremlin), a movie theater gremlin, and... another gremlin. At US$10 a pop, I'm not sure if I'll buy everything but I'll likely pick up Gizmo and Billy... and one of the gremlins, obviously. Maybe also mogwai Stripe. Another interesting entry was the Dorbz line, which will begin with series devoted to Batman and Marvel (because apparently Batman is the only thing that matters in the DC Comics universe...? Well, maybe!). While I'm generally not fond of this style, the rogues certainly look cute and I can imagine that I'll try to track down a Penguin, Riddler, etc. The figures will retail for around US$10 and will be sold in a widowed box (like the Pop! line, etc). An adorably awesome Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Deadpool will apparently be released as Super Deluxe Vinyls. I can say that I super want that Rocket Raccoon on my shelf.  Of course, since the line is a bit on the pricier side -- with a US$80 MSRP -- that may not happen. I'm sure other fans won't hesitate, though. You'll believe that a pony can fly! Three decos of the Hikari Rainbow Dash were on display and... I hate to admit that I kinda want all three. Other reveals included a wicked new Hulk mold (including one in a red deco!), C-3PO (with surprisingly awesome decos), a Clone Trooper, Iron Man, and... more? I could have swore that I saw a Hikari Wampa on display in other coverage, but we don't have a shot of it ourselves. Star Wars fans can also look forward to Bossk, Darth Vader, and a Storm Trooper (plus the Wampas which are coming and look awesome). We didn't get photos of some of those either, but other sites apparently did. Did you enjoy The Fifth Element? Because I didn't. Nonetheless, a good portion of the cast is getting figures in the ReAction line. The line is a reminder of one of Chris Tucker's weirdest roles. It was one of the films that Chris Tucker received a Razzie nomination for that year. Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, and Egon Spengler are looking more humorous than ever in Vinyl Idolz form. While something like this might not usually be my thing, I like the poses (and likenesses) for Ray and Egon. I'm also guessing that Winston must be waiting with the car. The Vinyl Idolz line will retail for around US$20. For something that's a bit more up my alley, Funko had a Disney "Heroes and Villains" Mystery Minis set on display (wait, does Funko produce more than heroes and villains?), a Frozen Mystery Minis set, and a Blizzard Mystery Minis set (including selections from the Diablo series, World of Warcraft, etc). Finally, we're going to need a bigger boat because Jaws is coming to the ReAction line! The shark will apparently be sold for US$20 by his lonesome, but he'll stalk his sold-separately co-stars on toy shelves come this June. Otherwise the Legacy Firefly figures were on display but I can't remember if we saw them or not previously. Ditto for the ReAction Arrow figures and a dozen more offerings. Frankly, it's Funko's fault for producing waaaaaay too much stuff at any given moment. How can one editor be expected to keep track? Be sure to check out the gallery for additional images.

Batman villains, ponies, and robots, oh my! DST's latest product listings

Jul 19 // Scarecroodle
The biggest news item might be My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Fluttershy vinyl bank, as it was previously kept under wraps. Fluttershy is the second entry in the series (the third, Rarity, has yet to be officially unveiled), following the previously revealed (and currently up for pre-order) Applejack. She's slated for an early 2015 release and has a US$23 MSRP. [ Pre-order at Entertainment Earth | Diamond Select Toys ] Personally, I'm more interested in the Frank Gorshin Riddler vinyl bank bust (not to be confused with the John Astin Riddler vinyl bank bust... which isn't a thing yet anyway). The Riddler was among my favorite rogues in the classic Batman tv series, in no small part for Frank Gorshin's manic performance (which may have inspired Jim Carrey's over-the-top version of the Riddler in Batman Forever). Although this is an unmasked version (and labeled as such, which might mean a masked version is on the way?), I'm wondering if you can place the mask over the Riddler's face. Even if it wasn't the greatest fit, it would make the vinyl bank bust a pretty awesome release. This 6-inch tall bank bust features the same Gotham city skyline as previous entries in the series and can be pre-ordered for US$60. He's slated for a Winter release. [ Pre-order at Entertainment Earth | Diamond Select Toys ] Even cooler than the Riddler might be this electronic lights and sound B9 Robot (Lost in Space). This 10-inch tall robot is something of a steal at US$50 given that the lights on the head and chest can be set to blink continuous (unlike those lame collectibles where one push is a limited action) and it apparently features three lines of dialogue: "I will accompany you, you may need protection." "Cannot compute, programming data insufficient." "Danger!" (repeated) Granted, it would have been nice if it had at least *one* complaint about Dr. Smith (what, no "Dr. Smith is lying!"), but it's a neat selection especially considering that one "Danger! Danger!" might have otherwise been enough. The B9 Robot *also* features articulation in his arms, claws, waist, and even its head can be raised/lowered. This 10-inch electronic figure (which, again, is only US$50) is slated for a 2015 release. Did I mention it's only US$50 yet? Because that seems a little crazy [ Pre-order at Entertainment Earth | Diamond Select Toys ] Sci-fi fans can also look forward to the Star Trek Undiscovered Country Enterprise A Electronic Ship. This 16-inch model of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A features all-new lights, sound and paint, all based on the ship's appearance in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It has a US$65 MSRP and is slated for an early 2015 release. [ Pre-order at Entertainment Earth | Diamond Select Toys ] Finally, there's Sin City Minimates Series 2 "Hard Goodbye" Box Set, based on the Marv segment from the first Sin City movie (in turn based on the Frank Miller comic). It features Marv, Kevin, Cardinal Roark, and Wendy. Fans of the film may recall that some of the characters are also appearing in the 6.5-inch Select line. The set features a US$20 MSRP and is slated for an early January release. [ Pre-order at Entertainment Earth | Diamond Select Toys ] The "Bluntman and Chronic" Cock-Knocker Retro Action figure is also available for pre-order at this point. He features a US$20 MSRP.
