Tomopop LinkUP: Gold Medal Panic

Feb 13 // Jeremy Emerje Crocker
Kahotan posted a gallery for the upcoming Bakemonogatari Nadeko Sengoku Nendoroid. She comes with a lot of neat arm and leg parts for some really great poses. She's up for pre-order now so go get one. AmiAmi did an early photo review of the Beach Queen's Ayase Aragaki from OreImo. She looks great, but a little simple just wearing a white bikini, but I suppose that has its own appeal. She won't be out until June so enjoy the gallery. figsoku blog posted a gallery for the FuRyu Sonico Going Out Time ver. prize figure that was released last month. I'm not much of a Sonico fan, but I might have to reconsider my negative impression of FuRyu. Piapro posted a new colaboration between Pullip dolls and Hatsune Miku with a new Sakura Miku doll. They're not a doll series that's for everyone, but they did an impressive job with the outfit. Piapro also posted a look at a new series of Vocaloid plush products from Sekiguchi. Included are stuffed dolls and dangly things of Miku, Len, and Rin. If you're a gamer then simply by saying 'George Washington with a Gatling gun' should be conjuring up images of BioShock Infinite. So here's a Motorized Patriot made out of LEGO blocks. I got the game when it came out and still haven't played it... Thanks to io9 we're getting a ride back to the obscure side of the Golden Age of comics for a look at the slightly disturbing Fantomah statue based on the works of Fletcher Hanks. She comes in three varieties, all pretty limited. Task One has a new series of seven-inch WeedBears up in his store. Available are Green Crack, Purple Kush, and Stoned Panda for US$69.99 each. There's also a limited pink Bubblegum bear for Valentine's day, but that one has gone away like so much smoke. Akiba Hobby has posted a gallery for FREEing's new Asuna figure coming up in March. She's nicely sculpted and while the pose is a bit awkward at least it's something different. Good Smile Company's Mamitan was over in Japan for Wonder Festival and took the most amazing photos of figma Snow Miku out in the wilds. We've seen a lot of photos for Miku, but these are probably some of the most adorable ones yet. Pinkcheeks posted a surprisingly easy DIY tutorial for making your own Japanese-style table. I think I need to give this a try. And that's it for this week's Tomopop LinkUP. Look for the next installment next week during the craziness of Toy Fair!

Oh, right, there are other events going on this week

Tomopop LinkUP: Walking in a winter Wonder Festival

Jan 30 // Jeremy Emerje Crocker
7-Eleven in Japan (yep, that's a thing) is now base to its own Gundam. A special version of the RX-93 Nu Gundam HG Gunpla is now calling the convenience store chain home. Done up in green, white, red, and yellow the kit is only running for ¥2,625. ToysREvil posted these really cool throw pillows based on game handhelds and controllers by Castella Natalia. Love the cartoonish look to them. Studio Ghibli fan Nendojin went above and beyond simple fan art to make a sculpture of the man himself: Hayao Miyazaki. RocketNews24 has posted video of the piece being made from start to finish. Job well done! Wave previewed a pair of girls from Majestic Prince being added to the Beach Queens line. Not Wave's best work and even they don't seem enthusiastic about them considering they haven't delivered their promised additional info on the girls despite being available for pre-order now. I guess they can't all be winners. And this is what it looks like when Wave tries hard. Akiba Hobby has posted a photo review for the upcoming Beach Queens Illyasviel von Einzbern from Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA. The effort they put into a figure this cute speaks for itself. In case you missed it the three figures from Hunter X Hunter are now available again for re-release. While there's nothing particularly new about them the official figma blog has posted the trio together. The real attraction is a quick three-panel comic. Check out CLayz newest Kuroneko figure from OreImo featuring a school swimsuit with cat years and tail. Oh man, she's perfect! Akiba Hobby posted a preview of Kotobukiya's Wonder Festival exclusive Kobato figure from Haganai. This is a red-dressed repaint of the figure Koto released just this past October. Looking good. Piapro posted a gallery for the upcoming Snow Miku 2014 Licca-chan doll. I kinda don't want to admit that it's growing on me... Also coming to Wonder Festival is a repaint of Orchid Seed's many Super Sonico figures. Based on a figure only just released back in December she is now sporting a chrome silver bikini. Not my kind of thing, but she does look really well made. Dark Horse has licensed the figure rights to the Powers series of comics and graphic novels. Their first piece is the impressively big Retro Girl statue which will later be followed by vinyl figures. More info can be found at the link. Kahotan posted a great gallery for Nendoroid Yoshino from Date A Live. Stiff contender for one of the cutest Nendoroids of all time! Tokidoki is collaborating Pullip on new doll Lunarosa. She's completely clad in Tokidoki fashion and even comes with a Donutella plush. She even gets her own tattoos! No price was given, but she'll be out in February. Sonico hasn't always been her full-figured self. Even she was a kid once. That's the message that Wing is sending with the prototype of their new child version of Nitro+'s digital diva. It actually is a rather cute figure in a much different way than we're used to seeing Sonico. Plum has made a new mini figure for their original character Sarah. She comes in two versions, either red or green. Both are exclusives, starting with sales at Wonder Festival for only ¥600 each. After that the red version will be sold throughout Nagano prefecture while the green one will be sold at the Lake Suwa SA (service area) for ¥700 each. Customizer Jared Flores created this really amazing Vinylmation version of the classic and iconic Dumbo ride found at Disney parks. The piece uses four Vinylmation Dumbo figures and one three-foot Vinylmation figure. Nicely done! That's all for this week! Come back next week when I'm sure we'll have another pile of Wonder Festival 2014 [Winter] previews to look at among other great things.

Tomopop LinkUP: Art is a blast!

Jan 16 // Jeremy Emerje Crocker
New papercraft site Urban Paper Collective has now launched. They describe themselves as an "international group of friends who share a passion for the design of papertoys of all sizes." The new site will be offering exclusive, free monthly papertoys right on the site as well as paper news, tips, and collaborations between artists. You can read bios for the artists and see examples of their work at the previous link. The first free toy is the above UPC Badger which has been followed by the first monthly exclusive: 1401: Clown. Akiba Hobby has updated again with a new gallery. This time featuring Beach Queens Wakaba Saegusa from Vividred Operation. She's pretty standard as these figures go, but doesn't look bad, just feels like she's missing something. AmiAmi has posted a two part interview with popular artist and character designer Tony Taka at his Albion Works studio. You probably couldn't pick him out of a crowd, but his figures are easily recognized. He discusses quite a bit in the two interviews, but I'm more of a sucker for looking at people's collections so I'm mostly in it for the extensive gallery found at the links. Biggest surprise for me: AmiAmi makes display cases? Good Smile Company once again gathered up all of their new Wooser merch for another look. included are a variety of plushies, oversized talking pens, and the headphone jack dust plugs. What better way is there to celebrate the new season of the anime (which is awesome)? Kahotan put together a gallery for their latest Nendoroid addition to their Little Busters series: Komari Kamikita. She's an adorable looking figure with lots of added parts including sitting legs and some snacks. Kud has some stiff competition coming when it comes to cuteness. Tailgrab's Aka posted a gallery for his recently purchased Dollfie Dream Kuonji Alice. The darkness and shadows are a really great match for her pale skin and dark hair and eyes! Which artist from the designer toy scene did Smithsonian Magazine just tap for an interview? Why none other than modeler Jason Freeny of course! He calls the interview one of his greatest honors and you can tell they did their homework. Emilio Garcia's latest brain-themed designer piece is the green Brainade. This piece is being sold via a lottery system with more info at the link. Talk about mind-blowing! Kixkillradio is keeping a bunch of figures warm under their own little kotatsu (Japanese heated table). There are two galleries, one for Cu-Poche and one for Nendoroids. They sure do look toasty under there! Tentacle Armada has posted two new relatively SFW gallery reviews. First up is Mary Stuart from Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere II. Second up is Tony Taka's Daisy figure which looks amazing under natural light! Reflective Boundary did a really nice photo gallery for Vertex's Noel Vermilion from BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma. Sometimes all you need is pictures because words just slow you down. Lastly, our own Tian here at Tomopop helps me out a lot every week by pointing out the really cool fan galleries I post every week. He's got a 2013 year-in-review over on his website Makigumo that's worth checking out alongside his other reviews and galleries. If you like this stuff go on over there and make his hit counter move a little. That's all for this week. I look forward to seeing you come back next week for another Tomopop LinkUP!

Tomopop LinkUP: The rated A-plush edition

Dec 26 // Jeremy Emerje Crocker
Good Smile Company has been doing a number galleries for several newly released figures through Kahotan's blog. First up is the massive Nendoroid Attack on Titan Colossus Titan & Attack Playset. This is a really amazing set and the gallery shows off just how feature packed it is.  Then there's their almost as impressive Rozen Maiden set featuring Shinku. With all of the added stuff plus the big doll case the box even includes handles! Then there's GSC's 1/10 scale Ultimate Madoka figure that comes with a copy of Figure JAPAN: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Edition. Is it just me or did they really skimp on the paint for the hair and wings? Piapro's blog is showing off Banpresto's Ichiban Kuji latest lottery prizes revolving around Miku Wears Milk, a campaign that combines Hatsune Miku and the Harajuku Milk fashion line. For the most part the lineup of prizes include decorative items and paper goods, but there's also a great pair of plush Mikus and a series of rubber straps.  Piapro also blogged about a new plushie being made for Snow Miku 2014 from Gift. She'll be available in all of the same events that the Snow Miku figures will be sold at.    Over on Twitter Nitroplus is previewing the prototype for Sentinel's latest Super Sonico figure. This one features Sonico in a bikini playing a chocolate covered guitar with "I ♥ You" dripping down the front. The finished figure will certainly look unique on the shelf.  Akiba Hobby got their hands on a painted prototype of Griffon's upcoming Vividred Operation figure featuring Akane and Aoi.  Definitely a standout pose for the pair in a single figure.  Akiba Hobby also has a colored gallery for the Beach Queens version of Aoi. As BQs go this one is a little by the numbers.  Over at Geeks are Sexy they've pointed out this amazing plushie bantha from Star Wars made by Etsy crafter ecoLEFTZ. It's massive and entirely made out of reused materials.  The Mary Sue drew our attention to this incredible LEGO model of  Rivendell from the Lord of the Rings series. This 200,000 piece work is done by Alice Finch with David Frank who also made the massive Hogwarts school.  Think Geek is selling this adorable Hi-Koala plush with speakers in its feet. It hugs your device while playing your tunes and is compatible with anything with a headphone jack.  Think Geek is also selling this great transparent Gummy Bear designed by Jason Freeny. Just like with his amazing custom work all of the bones and guts are visible and you can even dissect it! In the Tomopop C-Blogs Invincible did a round of reviews for MMZ-00, 01, and 02. Great stuff! And that brings us to the end of another Tomopop LinkUP. I hope you have a Happy New Year and I'll be seeing you again right here in 2014!
