Tomopop Review: Groove's Hatsune Miku

Jun 06 // Colette Bennett
Figure Name: Vocaloid Pullip Hatsune MikuFigure Maker: GrooveRetail: ¥11,605Available now at HLJ  All Groove boxes follow the same size, but they always get their own design. I really liked the pretty look of this one, with varying shades of blue and a lovely pink on the inside for contrast. You can see the back and the sides in our gallery. As soon as I slid Miku out of the box, I wondered how Groove was going to deal with the weight of her hair. After all, I've worn the Miku wig in past cosplays, so I know from experience that it is heavy! You can see here that Miku's accessories include the doll stand, the leeks, her headset and the doll card that comes with every Groove purchase. I get why the leeks are a part of this package, but what I do not get is why there is no way for the doll to hold them. Her hands are not poseable, and they do not fit into them. Maybe they're just supposed to be displayed in the vicinity of her, or something? Miku is also disappointed about this entire situation. Once you get a real eyeful of her, though, you kind of forget about the leek thing. Lord, she's pretty. Those big eyes, that pale skin and blushed cheeks ... man. I can't help it, I'm just kind of Miku crazy. However, turning Miku around has more or less the opposite effect. All large scale Groove dolls have these little pegs on the back of the head so you can close the eyes and change the direction they gaze in. However, it's kind of tough to hide Miku's since she has pigtails. They tried their best with the little fall of hair thing here, but it's still not too attractive to look at. Guess we'll keep her facing forward. Um, Miku? Your face is pretty. *sigh of bliss* Seriously, Groove did a good job on the face here. The bit of shine to the lips is great, and the big eyes really work for this character. As you can see here, the detail on the tie and the shirt is perfect right down to the trim. Her badge is tiny too, but you can see "Vocaloid" stenciled on it here in miniature letters. Here, we have another problem area. As you can see, the ponytails are secured with clear rubber bands. The pigtail decor pieces are secured with the same, but it's tough to get it to stay put. What I did for these photos was balance them on the pigtails. I'm thinking a touch of glue would have been a better choice in this situation, and I may go back and add some so I don't have to constantly push these into place if I want to carry her around or change her poses. Liking those details! There's her trademark 01, and the stencil is crisp with no paint out of place. Her legs are so skinny! But that is just the style of these dolls. The feet are jointed at the ankle, as you can see, allowing you to create girly little poses such as the one shown here. The boots look as if they bag up a bit at the top, but with a little pull they will look completely smooth. Alert: panties are white rather than striped. Is this a good or a bad thing? I mean, she does wear stripey pantsu, am I right? Guess it depends on the fan art ... of which there is an abundance. I love, love, love her closed eye face. I'm sure I wouldn't display her this way, but still ... sigh. Pretty. As I kind of feared about Miss Miku, her head is kind of heavy with all that hair on it. She tipped over forward a few times in the standing pose, even with the stand attached. It's pretty light, so I honestly found that she balanced better when she was sitting like this. Plus, she looks awfully cute this way. I think fans of Groove dolls and of Vocaloid will like this doll. It does have a few small flaws, but they do not really kill the purchase in my mind. She is a pricey doll for her size range, but it sure beats shelling out US$800+ for a custom ball jointed version of her. Groove really paid attention to the details here, and it shows in the finished product. Just sit her on the edge of a shelf looking all cute like I showed you above, and she will be just fine. [Special thanks to Hobby Link Japan for the review sample]
