[Reminder] Tomopop x Hobby Link Japan 2010 Gunpla Competition photo

We talk Gundam a lot around here and it's time to show us what you've got. Starting today, I am proud to announce the Tomopop x HLJ Gundam Competition! In this competition, show us why your Gundam model should be crowned the Gunpla of Gunplas. This contest will be different from other Gunpla contests, as it will feature not only your photography skills, but also your movie making magic. For photography, you can enter in the following categories: Best Diorama, Best Straight Build, and Best Original Gunpla. If you are more of a director, enter the video portion of the contest as well. Don't tell us how to build a kit, but give us a story. Make us laugh, cry, or drop jaws in awe of your creation.

What can you win for this contest? Well for starters, the overall grand prize winner in both the photography and Video categories will walk away with the Master Grade The O! The 1st place winner in the 3 photography divisions will receive a Master Grade Victory Dash while 2nd place winners will receive the 1/144 Real Grade RX-78-2 Gundam! Everyone that enters will also receive a 10% voucher for use on orders from Hobby Link Japan.

Be sure to check the full rules after the jump and get some inspiration from HobbyLink.tv's inaugural episode of Gunpla.

General Rules

*The hobbyLink Japan voucher can only be used on HobbyLink Japan (hlj.com) merchandise, excluding Early Bird or special clearance price sale items.

Entries will be accepted from June 16th through August 16, 2010. Any submissions after August 16, 2010 will not be considered for judging. Winners will be announced no later than August 31, 2010. Contestants can enter both Photography and Category B: Video. You can enter both categories, but you can only win one category.

All kits entered into Photography will be considered for the title of Gunpla of Gunplas. However, should the kit win Gunpla of Gunpla, it will not receive the award for any of the category it was entered in to. Multiple entries or entries into multiple subcategories with in Photography will not be considered.

Entries can be made using any combination of any Gundam or other model kits and materials. The only restriction on modification is that no photos can be touched up in order to alter the appearance of any enhancements or imperfections of the kit.

Subcategories
You can only enter one of these subcategories. Multiple entries will result in all entries being disqualified.

Best Gunpla Diorama
Set the stage for your Gunpla in this category. What makes the model for some is what's around it. Whether it's the remains of a broken down building or just Acguy laying down poolside, make the Mobile Suit show more than just its innards. For this category, entries shall be considered on the following areas: Build of kit, Scenery, and Originality. Multiple kits are allowed to be part of a single diorama, however multiple entries will not be accepted.

Best Gunpla Straight Build
Not everyone builds Gunpla to make an all-out reenactment of the One Year War. In this category, everyone has a chance to shine with their Gunpla creations. The kit should not be painted, but panel linings and markings are totally up to you. Just show off your kit in its best dynamic pose and style. Entries in this category shall be considered on the following areas: Build of kit and style. Only a single model kit will be allowed for consideration. Entries with multiple kits or multiple entries will not be judged.

Best Original Gunpla Work (Modifications)
For some, the best part of Gunpla is turning it into something else: turning your Zaku into a weapon of the Soviet Union, making the Susanowo a true follower of Bushido, or whatever else may come into your mind. Entries in this category are expected to bring something new to the table, add to the functionality of the kit, and take the mobile suit to something it has never been before. Whether it's your own custom creation or the task of creating the Juggler GM, make it yours. Entries in this category shall be considered on the following areas: Build of the kit, Originality of the design, and Style. Only a single model kit will be allowed for consideration. Entries with multiple kits or multiple entries will not be judged.

The overall winner selected from the above subcategories will win Gunpla of Gunplas.
Gunpla of Gunplas

In every contest, there is a kit that stands above the rest, considered to be the best of the best. Each model submitted in the contest will be eligible for this title. The staff will select their favorite submission. The winner of this category will not be eligible to win in its original entered category.

Best Gundam Video
his is your chance to show us what your Gunpla can really do. Make us laugh, make us cry, but keep it short: 3 minutes max. The video needs to feature a Gundam kit that you built. How you set the scene or create the story arc is totally up to. Videos submitted without a Gundam in them will not accepted. No tutorials or "how to videos", only cinematic magic.
How to Enter:
Best Gundam Video

Firstly create a youtube.com account, if you don't already have one and upload your video to your account. Then go to hobbylink.tv , and fill out your details. Make sure you include the link to the video you uploaded on that form and fill out ALL the other fields or else your entry will not be accepted. We will then place your video on www.youtube.com/hobbylinktv.

We will also post participants videos we particularly like on hobbylink.tv over the competition period.

If you have any questions regarding the competition and specific rules, feel free to send an email to myself at andres@tomopop.com and I will be glad to answer any and all questions.

Now, does Gunpla refer solely to the existing kits or does it mean we have to custom something?
Now, does Gunpla refer solely to the existing kits or does it mean we have to custom something?

Gunpla just refers to existing kits. You may however modify the kit in any other way with other accessories or parts, however modifications on parts may not be used for the Best Straight Build category.
Sweet!
That is all.
Want to clarify a few things:

First, it sounds as though there's a limit of one entry per person in photo and one per person in video. Is this correct?

Second - "Entries can be made using any combination of any Gundam or other model kits and materials." Technically that means one could not use any Gundam kits at all, and just use other model kits, or even just raw materials. But it is a "Gunpla" contest, after all, so I assume that some part of any given entry must be Bandai-manufactured Gundam product, right?

To take that question slightly less out of the realm of pedantry - what about, say, Bandai's Votoms or Macross Frontier kits? Are those allowed, or is this really (as it seems to be, on the face of it) strictly Gundam-only?

The photo resolution seems kind of on the low side, incidentally. 600 pixels doesn't leave a lot of room to show details.
Oh, and one more question I forgot: is a tomopop account actually necessary to enter? I've just created mine, of course, so it kind of ceases to matter, for me - but others have been wondering about this.

The base of the kit must be a Gundam model kit, but you may use accessories and parts from other mecha series kits to mod the Gundam kit.
I'm a bit curious on the Straight Build requirements. I under stand not painting to the point where it is a custom kit, but is standard painting (as shown in instruction/on the box) to make it closer to the actual MS still all right? Rarely, if ever, have I had a kit that didn't require at least a little painting to make it actually complete.
I don't think it makes a difference if the kit is painted according to the instruction or a custom color scheme you came up with yourself. The kit would considered as a painted kit.

What I am wondering is, since we are allow to panel line the kit, can we also paint the small details such as eyes and camera lens? Or do we have to use the foil stickers the kit comes with?

Thanks.
I also have a question about the straight build category.

I've never used actual paint but I have touched up a few parts with markers (both Gundam and regular) is that okay for the straight build category?
Thanks!
Hello everyone, I write from Italy and I just recorded.
I read that the winner must bear all costs of taxes, shipping etc.. I understand you correctly? Would not it be more correct that the asserted costs the organization of the contest? After all there is between these HLJ for which I am customer for years ...

Touch ups are fine for the straight build category, so long as it is not a complete done paint job. If any entries are deemed to have too much work done, they'll be placed in the Modification category.
Hello everyone, I write from Italy and I just recorded.

The contest rules as they are written state that any taxes and insurance are the responsibility of the entrant. It's my understanding that this would apply to any import taxes or duties that a government may charge. I will follow up with HLJ and make sure that this is correct.
Just in reply about taxes and shipping for the Gundam competition, HobbyLink Japan will cover shipping, but depending on which country you live in you might be charged import duty on the prize which we will not cover. Normally with prizes there shouldn't be any issues.

OK! Thank You very much! -_^
Since painted straight builds wind up in the "modifications" category, will they be at a serious disadvantage against customized builds? That is, will "creativity" win over quality of work?

Creativity factors in as well. We'll be taking what the person was going for. A diorama won't win simply by virtue.
"Every competition entrant gets a 10% discount voucher through HobbyLink Japan"

Do we get the 10% discount voucher after we submit the photos or after the contest ends?
You will be receiving the discounts at the end of the contest.
I cant submit my entry, it keeps saying the mail client is not properly installed.
Did we got a reply when we submit an entry into this competition confirming our entry has been received?
About the deadline - is the deadline of August 16th specific to any particular time zone? I ask only because it really is coming down to the wire for my project, and it could make a huge difference. If the deadline is Japanese time, for instance, I need to submit my entry no later than the morning of the 16th. If the deadline is my local time, that effectively gives me a whole extra day to work. If the deadline isn't tied to a particular time zone, I could even work late into the night on Monday finishing things up...
Hi, i enter a gunpla in the mods category, but i dint get any confirmation of my entry, is that normal?
hi,
I added my entry astrays flight a few weeks back now
but the thing is i couldnt adjust the image size
i know its allitle late for that now
but will i get disqualified if i dont have the right picture size
please say no because i took nearly a month to do the entry and i really want it to be worth while
please reply to this comment!
